This is mostly a copy of the review I did for the Santa Cruz place. I cannot eat burritos anywhere else; Tacos Moreno has spoiled me. Having said that, if you like a tortilla stuffed with flavorless rice and a tiny spec of meat, go elsewhere. I know people who prefer rice burritos. If you need free chips and can't pay with cash, go elsewhere. I'd pay with Canadian currency if that's what it took to get their burritos. Oh, and the hot sauce is perfect. Recently, my son and some friends came up from S Cal and they tested the top burrito joints in Santa Cruz and they universally came up with the same favorite ... Tacos Moreno. M6 first experience hear is that they are over over price. And the portions are tiny. Not what I was expecting since a few people recommend this taqueria. Last they accept only CASH really. We wanted a quick bite before going to a movie and decided to come here. We ordered 2 burritos, one was carnitas and the other was a shrimp burrito. We like custom ordering our burritos and I requested lettuce in the carnitas burrito. I was told that I could not get lettuce. What?! I told them I was willing to pay extra to get the burrito how I wanted. Then I was told that they did not have lettuce. What?! I asked what they used for the taco salad and they told me lettuce. I asked if they could put some of that lettuce into my burrito and I got a no. I could go to Burger King and ask for lettuce on my plan hamburger and they would give me lettuce. The food was substandard at best. We live in an area with a lot better mexican places and I can think of 6 that I would rather have gone to. Finally, this place is LOUD! After standing in line with 4 people ahead of me, I got a bad headache from all the noise. It was nerve wrecking. Well, I have to say I wasn't that impressed, I have tried two visits at this location. I have been to the water st. location a few times. The Capitola location doesn't seem to be able to live up to the same standards for some reason. First of all, let me say I tried the chile verede. Which is made with beef at Tacos Moreno instead of pork. But it doesn't really taste like chie verde. What it does have is a distinct taste of cumin, so it tastes more like chili rojo. Not normal for chile verde. The meat is nice and tender and would have tasted better without all the cumin IMO. Prices aren't bad for the most part. A regular burrito will run you $5.35. They have corn and flour Quesadillas at decent prices. Tacos are $3,25 for some reason, a little pricey IMO for a taco They seem to have a steady flow of business. Parking is not an issue. There are a few tables outside and about a dozen inside. All in all, it is not my go to place but it's alright. The water st. location is better. Keep in mind both locations are CASH only. read more

We were going to eat at Leo's (totally awesome food) but noticed that this place had opened up. So hey why not give it a try? It was a Saturday evening pushing night time and there was one guy in there finishing up. The menu is very minimal and kinda expensive for what it is. I asked what kind of fish was in the fish taco and the guy mumbled something and didn't seem to know - I said tilapia and yeah that was it. I ordered a regular taco with carnitas and another one supreme style. My boyfriend ordered the burrito. Gotta order something "normal" to see how they compare. We took it to go and when we got home, I took out the burrito and it seemed limp and small. What happened to the log sized burrito you usually see everywhere else? My taco was okay; but there was barely any meat and I didn't even eat the second taco. They gave us salsa but no chips. The carnitas wasn't all that and we were very disappointed. When we did leave, a few people showed up; but we will not be coming back here. I checked my to-go menu for Vallarta and Leo's and both of those places have much more reasonable prices ($2.25 or less compared to $3.00) and the food was WAY better. After eating at the original Tacos Moreno in SC for years, I decided to give the new location a try. The Corn Quesadillas are just as great as at the original, with the same awesome salsa. This location is far better, though, for three reasons: 1. Lots of parking 2. Lots of tables 3. Beer on tap. They even have what they call a "Chavela" (I call it a "Michelada") - beer with clamato, lime, and good stuff. Can't wait to go back! read more

I'm shocked at some of the negative reviews! Morenos is my all time favorite mexican taqueria. I love that they use cabbage rather then lettuce in their burritos and tacos because it withstands getting soggy. I can never pass up the corn quesedillas. They're kind of like a big taco, really delicious. And the shrimp tacos are worth the extra dollar. They're extremely fresh, unlike some places which obviously use shrimp that has been frozen. For those who do not know me, I have been known to travel 200 miles on my birthday to go to a taqueria, and I eat Mexican food daily. Tacos Moreno is the absolute cream of the crop across the board for Santa Cruz County. This Moreno's is my favorite as they have breakfast, rice, shrimp, fish, draft beer, tv's, and comfortable tables. My favorites are listed below in no particular order: 1) Breakfast Burrito (beans, eggs, and cheese) 2) Super Burrito with Chile Verde (beef) or Al Pastor 3) Corn Quesadilla 4) Flour Quesedilla with Beans (order with no oil) 5) Tacos with or without cheese with all meats Do not forget to get plenty of their amazing salsa! Fraud, charging every single customer +$0.25 for salsa that you don't order!! I have been a long time customer of Tacos Moreno (on campus mostly and occasionally at their midtown location). Recently stopped by their Capitola location and was shocked! The extremely rude cashier charged me and after paying $19.25 for 2 burritos and 2 cokes I felt ripped off. I asked for an itemized receipt and sure enough she had charged me $0.25 + for salsa for each burrito. So I have already ordered a meat burrito at a cost of $6.35 (already feeling ripped off because the amount of sour cream and guacamole was laughable). Then to be charged for something I didn't want any additional amount of (the description of the burrito says it includes salsa). As I stood around and waited for my order I realized that the lady was pressing the $0.25 button for each person's order per item ordered. I think most people just don't know it's being done! My husband and I were visiting Capitola yesterday and decided we wanted to eat at this restaurant because it was Mexican oriented and we love tacos. We wanted to have the perfect seating and view since it was our first time there. There was no line upon arriving to the restaurant, so the host took us in to be seated right away. We told the host we would like to be seated in a designated table since it was available and had shade, but he said we could not sit there because it was a busy day and that was a table for four people. We insisted on being seated at that table since there was nobody waiting to be seated and right behind us was another table " of 4 spots " but only two people sitting in it . So how could we couldn't get the table we liked ? He did not want to give us the table so we decided to leave the place. Anytime we go to a restaurant specially when we are celebrating a special event we would like to get the attention and service that we as customers deserve especially when there are tables available that are not reserved and not being waited upon. I am so happy we actually did end up leaving because we came across another restaurant called Capitola bar & Grill that had live music and had the best attention from their employees not to mention the best view . The food is good here don't get me wrong, but the burritos DON'T come with rice for whatever reason. I'm Mexican and it's standard to put rice in a damn burrito, so I bought 2 supreme burritos here expecting them to have rice. They were 8 dollars each too, so not the cheapest. When I come home and start to eat mine halfway through I figure out that there's no rice in it. (I kept eating as I thought I would eventually encounter the rice). It was very dissapointing. I call and ask about it and they say that having no rice in their burrito "is what separates them from the rest." As if that is something to be proud of and not a way to pinch pennies. There is nothing negative I can say about this wonderful little joint. I've never been a huge fan of burritos...until now. My boyfriend lives down the street and we literally will come to Tacos Moreno on a daily basis for their vegetarian burrito. It is perfection in a flour tortilla. And of course they have the lovely Mexican coca-colas in the glass bottles. The customer service is great, we are always greeted with a warm smile and the employees will go above and beyond to make sure you are happy with your order. I love this place.
