I went to Tad's barbershop in Leland, N.C. to avoid going into Wilmington as I normally do. BIG MISTAKE. I got there about fifteen minutes after they opened. There were three teenagers getting their haircuts. When a chair opened, I was called to get my hair cut. I was asked what type of haircut I wanted. I request a "Regular Clean Cut" men's haircut. The barber did not know what that was. I then said "Like Tom Cruise in a Few Good Men". The barber still was clueless. I then said I would be fine with a haircut like the one teenager was getting. My barber had to ask the other barber what the style was that he was giving the teenager. He came back and told me it was a number six. When he was finished, my hair looked terrible, especially for $25. If I wanted a bad haircut like this, I would have went to "Kwik Kuts" for half the price. Also, none of the barbers were talking to the customers and all they played was Rap music. I will make the trip into Wilmington next time I need a cut. read more

Rude. I've never been to a barbershop and was really looking forward to trying something new. I decided to give it a chance when my regular stylist told me she went to Tad's to get an under cut that looks awesome. (Not sure if it was in Leland or Wilmington.) At any rate, when I walked into the Leland location, no one greeted me. I said hello, and only one barber on the far left said hello back. I sat down and waited. Men who came in after me and people with little boys kept getting served. I thought, "well, you should have checked with someone to find out their protocols," so I got up and spoke to the barber in the middle (Seth, I think) who seemed to be in charge as he was directing barbers to clients as they finished with current clients. I told him, "I should have checked with you when I came in, but do you cut women's hair?" He said yes and asked me what I was looking for. I told him that my regular stylist had been in and got an undercut and I wanted to try that, too. He said, I will probably have Simone do it. Simone was the only female barber there at the time. She was busy cutting kids hair, so I really wasn't sure why other barbers who were free couldn't do it as the cuts they were doing on guys looked wonderful and much like what I wanted. I didn't say anything, but perhaps I should have. At any rate, they got busy and people who came in way after me kept getting assigned barbers. I continued to wait. Simone was on the family's second kid when I saw her interact with Seth. It seemed as though she was asking him about who was next, and he obviously indicated me. She looked at me and she scrunched up her face in a gesture that was not welcoming. It finally dawned on me that for the first time in my life, I might be experiencing homophobia. I didn't want to misjudge and told myself that I was probably being too sensitive. So I continued to sit there. More men and boys kept coming in and getting served while I continued to sit. This establishment is a first come first serve kind of place. After about 45 minutes I decided to get up and leave. If it wasn't homophobia, it definitely was rude. I've been really conflicted about saying anything and leaving a review as I don't want to unjustly write a negative review for a small business. I think Seth's numerous assignments of clients to barbers after me while I continued to wait followed by Simone's facial reaction (which was disapproving, to put it mildly) truly made me feel like it was homophobia. I sincerely hope I am wrong about that, but at the very least, it was rude. (I anticipate that someone will reply that I shouldn't have gone to a barber since I am female, but I did ask if they served women and know that my regular stylist (female) went to one of Tad's locations.). read more
