I find myself compelled to offer this commentary on my experience at Tahoe Forest Hospital because I have read some of the reports and cannot believe those people were at the same facility. I am a 94-year-old male adult who believed himself to be in reasonable health for his age. I was visiting family at Donner Lake when I found myself short of breath and the left arm swollen beyond normal. My son drove me to TFH. I entered the emergency room and was immediately seated at the in-take desk. There were two other patients seated in the ER waiting area. My information was recorded quickly and efficiently. I was seated in the waiting area for about 5 minutes before being called to go to the treatment area. The staff helped me get to bed in the ER and shortly I was examined by Dr. Amy Little. We described all my symptoms and she ordered tests. About 20 minutes later she returned and very comprehensively explained that I had problems more serious than I had thought. More exams were ordered and treatment was initiated. Dr. Nicolas Vargas performed a thoracentesis on my left lung cavity and removed 1.15 liters of fluid I did not know was there. This was done in the ER with no pain at all. Dr. Haven Ritchie recommended I be admitted for an overnight stay to make sure there would be no complications from the procedure. She also carefuly outlined other issues about which she had concern in terms that I could understand. By late afternoon I was transferred to a room on the second floor. I was received by Nurse Anne and made most comfortable. I remained in the hospital for another day and a half while they were making sure it was safe for me to travel by air to my home in Arizona. During this time, I was being cared for by Dr. David Richie and Dr. Ann Little. At no time was I left I the dark about my condition. Nurse Anne was extremely attentive and there was nothing I needed that she did not supply immediately. She was the day nurse. I received the same quality care from the night nurse, Amy. I must mention that the quality of the food was excellent. It was more than I could eat and the nurses were very good to me, they allowed me to leave food on my plate. By the third day they had me up and walking in the hall. I was deemed eligible for discharge. The discharge activity was conducted very efficiently. The absolute worst healthcare system I've experienced. If you live in the area and need long term care find a doctor in Reno. It took forever to see a doctor just to find out she is only there for the summer. The doctor is so young and inexperienced she didn't even order standard blood tests that every other doctor I have been to since turning 40 has ordered. No cholesterol, sugar, hormones. Just took my copay, billed my insurance and offered ZERO healthcare. I have been trying to get support from TFH for 2 years with no success. Don't waste your time or money. Go to St Mary's or Renown Health in Reno for real medical help. read more

Do not go here if you have a choice. I wish we had a better quality medical service for our small town. Especially for a small town, this place is so impersonal, very hard to schedule and the doctors overall of poor quality. Very hard to see a consistent doctor. Appointments take forever to get especially for children. Information that pediatricians and primary care providers have is limited and often shows poor training on the subject matter. There probably are some good doctors there but do ask for a recommendation from someone you trust first. Also make sure to double check that you know what you are being charged. The information on pricing from the front desk is not reliable and you may be unpleasantly surprised. Like another review said, they may tell you something is covered by insurance and its often not correct. read more

At Tahoe Forest Urgent Care for a knee injury I was told the knee brace they insisted I take would be covered by my insurance. WRONG. They tried to give me crutches but I refused. I'm so glad I did. Tahoe forest Urgent care charged me $321 for a knee brace that is equivalent in quality to a $30 knee brace on Amazon. 10 times! So wrong. You need to educate your staff about informing patients. I never would have accepted if I had known I was going to be charged that much. Now reading their reviews I see a clear pattern. I doubt the organization will change, but if anyone reads this before going there, be extremely cautious of anything they try to give you that you can buy yourself. So glad I didn't accept Advil, probably would have gotten a $200 bill for that. read more

TAHOE FOREST HOSPITAL WAS GREAT! I ended up in their Emergency Room after a mountain bike crash at Northstar on Saturday. I arrived by personal vehicle and check in was quick and easy. I was evaluated quickly, processed as a modified trauma and was in a room talking with the ER doc within 10 minutes of arrival. Xray and CT happened very quickly, and my diagnosis, 4 cracked ribs, punctured lung, pneumothorax, was explained to me with plenty of opportunity to ask questions. I was admitted and stayed 3 days. Dr. Cooper was excellent, taking extra time to answer question after question after question, explain the need for a chest tube, what to expect, when it would come out, etc. The nursing staff were AMAZING! Everyone was very kind and patient and genuinely cared for me and helped me manage my pain very well. I really liked them all! Cora, Kati, Jillian, Liz, and everyone else THANK YOU! My expectations were low but the food was surprisingly good too! Dietary came in and took my order in advance for each meal for the coming days. Scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt w/ fresh berries and coffee is what I eat for breakfast at home! Discharge was simple and fast. My husband Ruben recently had knee replacement / revision surgery at this hospital with Dr Ringnes. Wow, we could not have asked for a better, well organized, clean and friendly hospital. Every single person we had contact with was great!! His nursing team was amazing, especially his nurse, July RN. They were all so helpful and encouraging throughout his overnight visit. Hands down, the best experience we have had at a hospital. Highly recommend this facility if you need care. It was worth the drive fromChico, and we would do it again if the need arises. I was in a very serious car accident involving my ex husband when I lived in Tahoe City. He was driving and I was 7 months pregnant. He was taking me to the hospital with a 104 fever with strep throat. I asked him to pull over. He was yelling at me and shoved me out of the truck by slowing down, opening the passenger door and pushing me out. When I arrived at the E.R the Dr. questioned me as to what happened, I told him. He said my husband told him I jumped and he believed him. This Dr. got up, told me he had other, real patients to care for and walked away. They called the pediatrician and he never came. A nurse sat by me all night while we slowing listened to my baby's heartbeat stopped. My shoulder was out of place, my jaw broken. Nobody came to help for 12 hours. Then they forced me to lay in bed with my baby still inside for over 2 weeks before they induced labor. I gave birth to a perfect 6 lb stillborn little boy who could have been saved. The people from the coroner office had the audacity to bring both his birth certificate and death certificate to me in my hospital bed at the same time to sign. During the process I received no empathy from nearly every nurse who attended me. My husband was treated like a king. As if he had suffered the horrific loss and pain. I was too young and grief stricken to fight. I sued the hospital and the ex-husband's insurance company. And won. I gave the money away. And I've never been the same. The 2 doctors involved left the Tahoe area almost immediately. I hope nobody else ever suffered by the hands of this cruel hospital again. And pray that they've made serious decisions about who they hire now. And have higher standards in treating their patients. I will never set foot inside there again. Needless to say. read more

The more pain grows the less chance to survive I did find 4 people who gave me the medication I needed. Financially it destroyed me. Physical pain and anguish for years and on going. It cannot be addressed with people who do not want to help you ( Tell you its in your head) Lesson for others; *Patients rights people are not covered entities: They have no right to ask HIPAA questions. As this hospital has: This is a form of demoralization. *Never do any procedure here before meeting the doctor. Never be put asleep with someone who will not talk with you. In my case he wrote no stomach pain, I was there for that reason. He was kind enough to play Led Zeppelin whole lotta love for the colonoscopy but never spoke with me. Entering a Hospital, be careful. This is not a normal place. ( talk with African Americans, they know the drill. ) 1) You have to find people that will help you. ( Avoid any conflicts even if they are the party this harming you. Walk away. No way to win 2) In my case ( Folly I my side to think I mattered as human being) A) Refusal to document many times B) Refusal of Patients rights ( do not even bother they are there to protect the hospital ( they will give you lip services or write off as unstable) C) Doctors can write notes even if they did not see you: caution is necessary: this what they did to me D) Find a doctor you like. That is only chance E) If you have a diagnosis you are most likely going to get harmed. Primary and specialty outpatient care has been high quality and very courteous. An Emergency room visit was also and quite expeditious despite requiring a CT scan. An outpatient MRI was also pleasant. A colonoscopy in their outpatient surgical facility treated me very well. read more

If you're in the unfortunate situation of having to go to Urgent Care, this one is the best. I injured my arm and had to visit the Tahoe Forest Urgent Care Center over the holiday weekend. The staff was friendly and efficient and got me into a room within about 15 minutes of arrival. The doctor saw me shortly after and he was thorough, gentle, kind and informative in his examination of my injury. They did an X-ray onsite and were quick with referrals for additional tests. The whole thing took about an hour, most of which was spent discussing the injury, possible diagnosis, and treatment options with the doctor. I had surgery at Tahoe Forest Hospital today. I had cancer removed from my forehead. Dr. Watson was my surgeon. This is the second surgery he has done on my face. I have not seen the results yet on this 2nd one, but knew I was in great hands. Although the nurses and staff were very attentive and eased my fears of general anesthesia, Dr. Watson was the star of the show. He is a very rare Gem of a man. Dr. Watson is an ENT, but also a plastic surgeon. You can't hire him for a face-lift, but you can find him doing facial reconstruction to remove cancer, helping accident victims and deformities. ​​His work is impeccable. I think this shows just what kind of person he is. Dr. Watson helps people restore their dignity and is an all around Good man. I am very blessed to have this talented surgeon do his work on me twice. The whole staff was great and I am in aww of how professional and kind everyone was. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me during my stay last week, after I crashed my Harley on the 89 at Squaw Valley. I greatly appreciate each of you. From the nurses to the physicians & the entire staff. All of you are amazing at what you do, you not only do your jobs well, but truly care about your patients. I was injured, scared, & all of you went above & beyond to provide a level of care, that was miles above someone who was simply "doing their job". All of you cared about me, & it showed. As a new patient at TFH I made a first appt with a general practitioner 6 weeks out. At week 4 TFH called to tell me the appt has been cancelled. I called back to reschedule (11 minutes on hold) . The first available appointment was in 9 weeks. In the meantime I had a referral for Physical Therapy. Referrals must be faxed to TFH PT department. My referral was faxed (with proof of remittance) Monday morning. I called Wednesday only to be told they don't have the referral. Called again on Thursday and was told that they receive many faxes per day and that my referral could be on someones desk pending processing or it could be stuck to another fax. The PT appointment person searched around for 10 minutes in hopes of locating my faxed referral . No luck. Hence the 1 star. I've gotten no where and I have not yet stepped foot inside an TFH office. read more

Note: the doctors and nurses who work within TFH are great people and do an amazing job. We have no issues with them. This negative review is entirely about TFH administration and how they have failed/abused our family. Tahoe Forest Hospital canceled a scheduled doctor's appointment without cause for my extremely sick 2.5-year-old after we drove him an hour+ to a desperately needed appointment. Tahoe Forest Hospital has continued to send us huge bills for the birth of my 2.5-year-old even though we paid in full shortly after his birth, have spoken to their billing department over a dozen times, and have been sent written confirmation that we have paid our balance in full. They even sent collections after us after we had been assured by their billing department that we had no outstanding balance. Tahoe Forest Hospital is an absolute nightmare. I strongly advise staying away at all costs. read more

There's just so much wrong. From shady billing practices to the inability to get appointments in any reasonable amount of time, I didn't think it could get any worse. But it can. After waiting 6 months for a neurology appt with Dr.Kreiss, I would have been better off webmd'ing myself. He barely examined me, barely spoke with me, and didn't even make an effort to try to understand my symptoms. He spent the entire appt reading irrelevant 10 year old medical records and finished the appointment by saying, "I can't help you, I'm just a Dr. at Tahoe Forest". I just received an invoice from a debt collector (collection agency) for a service at this Hospital (creditor name: Michael B McQuarrie, MD) from August 2019!!! That was 1.5 years ago, this is the first I am receiving any sort of bill, and it came directly from a debt collector. Upon further investigation, the hospital seems to have just copied the address from my ID on the night of the emergency and made no effort to verify. It was incorrect so they have been sending bills to the wrong place. Instead of calling me, they just kept sending bills, let it remain delinquent without any other method of outreach, and passed this onto a debt collector. I now have a mar on my otherwise pristine credit because their administrative staff failed to ask a simple question and their billing department is too lazy to pick up the phone. Looking through their Yelp page, it looks like there are a lot of billing issues here. Someone should call the IRS and audit this place... I bet it's a mess. This review is specifically for the Physical Therapy department. I'm going to try to keep this short and to the point because I want everyone reading these reviews to have time to read this one. I was referred to the Physical Therapy from the main Tahoe Forest office. I called and set up an appointment. They called me back to review my insurance coverage and told me I had not met my deductible so I would have to pay out of pocket. They told me that the first appointment would be approximately $280. I then went to the appointment and was charged $265. A month later I got a bill in the mail for $526, $246 more than I was quoted on the phone. Since receiving that bill I have spoken with at least three different people from the billing/admin office. Each person promised me a call back. I never received any calls back. Then I got another bill in the mail. On the due date I called back and was told, after three months, that they would knock $26 off the bill. Bottom line - NEVER trust these people when they provide you a quote. They will lie to you and they will not honor what they tell you. They also have horrible customer service and on top of all that my shoulder is exactly the same as it was the day I went in. $500 for some stretches..... EDIT (1/14/21): I see that someone from Tahoe Forest Hospital commented on my review. As I detailed in my original review above, they had every chance to make this right and they didn't so much as call me back. As I said in my message to this commenter from Tahoe Forest Hospital, they have my phone number and if they want to make it right they can call me. UPDATE: I responded to Kristina's comment below by calling TFH's billing department. There was apparently no room for negotiation, and no explanation of what I am being billing for, aside from the bare-bones EOB I received from my insurance company. I am now stuck paying off a $2,200 bill because I smashed my thumb and was concerned it might have been broken. It wasn't. And now I have medical debt that I would not have had if I were able to visit the local Urgent Care (which was not open at the time of night my incident occurred, forcing me to go to TFH's ER). I won't sit here and tell you I'm blameless. I made the decision to go to the ER over a hurt thumb, after all. But I can't imagine the kinds of financial horrors that people in worse health than me have to deal with at TFH. I seriously and strongly caution anybody against TFH. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Beware of unethical billing practices from TFH. As others here have stated, they will take advantage of the fact that they are the only emergency facility within a 50-mile radius. Their costs are outrageously high for seemingly trivial procedures or exams. TFH is epitome of the corruption of our healthcare system. On the flip side, the care team here is very attentive and accommodating, so I suppose that counts for something. read more

Proceed with caution, unfair billing practices! I incurred knee surgery in September 2023 and just received a bill for the initial consultation. Now I am unable to use my 2023 flexible spending account because of the 7 month lag in billing. I called their accounting office and spoke with Courtney... told her I was on a fixed income and the late billing places me in a bad position. I requested they discount the bill a reasonable amount to make things right. Courtney refused and stated they have 5 years to bill patients for services. Based on the way they handle billing procedures, I cannot recommend using them... most people are not prepared to pay out of pocket for services rendered 7 months ago and up to 5 years later.... this is an unfair policy that needs to be addressed by their management to help patients afford the exorbitant cost of healthcare. read more

I was treated for broken ribs at the Tahoe Forest Hospital and Urgent Care Center. Everybody in both locations were great! From the people checking you in at both, to the nurses, to the techs, to docs. Fantastic, empathetic, nice, and professional. I had never had an overnight stay in a hospital and was pleasantly surprised at how nice the room, the bed, and overall experience was. Also, the meals I was served were superb. Delicious cheeseburger for lunch, salmon and wild rice for dinner, and a great quiche for breakfast. Everybody was helpful, even those who were not my direct care providers. Makes me sad to have to leave a negative review because the doctors and nurses at this hospital are amazing. However, COVID protocols at this hospital are inhumane and should be illegal. I was turned away from urgent care for having a fever, despite showing them a negative PCR test within 48 hours. A nurse cleared me for urgent care just as i was being admitted to ER. They took my blood in an alleyway behind the ER to 'protect staff and patients'. I am a vaccinated nurse and take COVID precautions very seriously but this is beyond extreme. I will likely have to go to ER today for the same condition because of COVID protocols (despite numerous negative PCR tests). I will be contacting the BBB as nobody from the hospital has followed up on my complaints. read more

Absolutely terrible. I recommend going to Reno for any of your healthcare needs. Their Women's Center was the worst treatment I've experienced with doctors ever and wouldn't suggest going here to my worst enemy. I thought it would be safe to get blood work done here, but they surprised me with a $1100 bill with NO quote. I have never received such a high medical bill in my life. This was after they tried to charge me $3k for an ultrasound, but then I found an alternative at Reno Diagnostic Services for a fraction of the cost. I should have done the same with the blood panel but couldn't even imagine the blood panel to be more than $300. Such a shame that the Truckee area doesn't have a decent hospital or health system. Janet Van Gelder still protecting Wies and Dodd. Silence and still remains in ignorance, but she can't avoid it forever. I am reminding her of what TFH did and is continuing to do to my health, now my husbands. Finally found a sound doctor with no history of being sued to help me. He did surgery under extremely strict conditions due to the bacteria which Van Gelder is still backing isn't dangerous. My husband got called into the office by his boss this morning wanting to know why another surgery had to be done for a huge sum of money on our insurance. No joke here,12/3/2021,grand total $78,000.00 for pain. Due to Dr. Jeffery Dodd and his mess up and the bacteria given to me from TFH and Jeffery Dodd extreme caution and IV antibiotics had to be used during the entire surgery (surgery number four now). His boss was fuming the first time back on 12/11/2018 TFH and Dodd charged 50,000.00, failed on 12/14/2018. Saint Mary's had to fix it all over again on 12/26/2018 at the cost of $217,000.00. On 7/16/2019 at the cost of $8,000.00 right I.T. Tendon head had to be removed due all the trauma of my hip failure from Dodd. My insurance is furious at Dodd for what's he's caused, they aren't angry with me the Rep. I deal with at Dodd's negligence, damage and bacterial disease he's caused. I am healing and it's slow, however it's helping and there's another procedure I have to endure to deaden a major nerve near my hip to stop it from burning. Did a test run and the result is not bad. The worst part if I'd known how corrupt Dr. Jeffery Dodd and TFH were I would have left my hip bone on bone and dealt with it. Or tried to push the ROC to do it they still won't due to age still inform me I am to young. Jeffery Dodd is a danger to every single patient he crosses paths with and the ones who he's done no harm to should consider themselves extremely lucky. The patients whose lives he's destroyed, (he's ruined many) he needs to be stripped of his license, fined, made to reimburse patients for all they've lost.
