Decent little Chinese spot. Quick and nice service. The lunch special is a good deal at only 8.55. Got the Hot Sour Soup, the Crab Rangoon, and the shrimp with garlic. The hot and sour soup was very warm and hearty. The crab rangoon tasted over fried. The shrimp with broccoli was decent. The shrimp did not taste fresh at all, it definitely was frozen. The broccoli was good but the sauce was pretty salty. The fried rice was flavorless and not that great at all. It's been a while since I've entered a restaurant and felt uncomfortable enough not to stay for a glass of wine. My future husband and I were looking for a new Chinese place to dine in at and walked into Tai Pan. We were not greeted upon entering and were stared at as if we were in the wrong place. I can't explain the looks we were given, because you had to be there but it was a mixture of disgust and absolute disdain. Mind you, while we were waiting we witnessed the two people working in the restaurant be attentive, conversational and pleasant to a white male ordering his food to go. As we took our seats my man noticed the guy behind the register/bar area staring at us from afar and felt uneasy about it. I requested a glass of Merlot & a lemonade for my man, after being asked for my ID I noticed I left my wallet in the car because my man was paying for dinner. We exited, got my wallet & as I was getting ready to present my ID I noticed the pair staring at us with the same looks of disgust. My man mentioned that they were also distancing themselves from us. The amount of space between us while we were communicating was ridiculous. I told my man I wanted to leave and to the woman's surprised we were gone shortly after. This kind of treatment from Middle Eastern and Far Eastern business owners, towards African American patrons isn't uncommon in the Midwest but in 2025, it's downright ignorant & ridiculous. read more

I've eaten here a few times over the years, i use to take care if someone in the neighborhood. I haven't been in two or three years. I was on their side if town and had a craving for the fried rice. I called, made sure it was still made with eggs and added onions. I did not know there would be a whole onion in my rice. By the time I picked out two 3rd's my box was half empty. The rice was under cooked and crunchy and did not have much flavor (even with ALL those onions). I dont know how to spell the chicken I got, it starts with General, it was very flavorful the consistency of the sauce was different for me, super thick. It had the sweet, spicy, sour going for it but a little too sour. There prices and sizes are ridiculous. This is a great little restaurant with real food and a broad menu. The fantastic shrimp, scallops and beef in the Hunan triple sizzle are to die for. Really it was enough for two people but I managed to devour all of it. beef shrimp and sea scallops stir-fried with pea pods, mushrooms, sliced water chestnuts and a light sauce that was delightfully spicy but not overly hot. I found the place to be a typical Chinese restaurant one would find in just about any neighborhood. The decor of this place seemed a bit outdated but by no means torn or tattered. This place appears as if it does more takeout business rather than sit down service. For the most part I like my food. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was how much sesame sauce came with my beef. We were thrilled to discover this place on our Illinois road trip. We ordered veggie eggrolls, the vegetable mei fun and the Hunan tofu. Everything was fresh and delicious. The rice noodles were loaded with garlic, spring onion and shredded peapods. The black bean sauce on the tofu was very fresh with whole beans. I suggest ordering the Hunan dishes very spicy! Best Chinese restaurant in Springfield! Exceptionally clean, excellent service - friendly and attentive. I got hot tea and it was excellent. Table also got a Diet Coke and they were quick with the refills which was appreciated. The Crab Rangoon was delicious! It came out piping out and so fresh. You can taste and see the green onion in it. It was clearly prepared homemade. Loved the sauce at the table with the pretty little sauce bowls. The Steamed Dumplings were awesome! We got them based off another review and they did not disappoint. The accompanying sauce was great. The Sesame Chicken was THE BEST. I've had a lot of Sesame Chicken - everyone has. Usually it's overtly sweet and the chicken is dried and has gristle. I usually find it to have too much breading too. This was PERFECT. Piping hot, sauce was SO flavorful, and the steamed broccoli was perfection! Also had Sweet and Sour Chicken and was told it was very good as well but didn't get a chance to try. Stayed at one of the nearby hotels this weekend and ordered delivery from this local restaurant. We drove by it later and it looks a little dumpy on the outside, but my experience of the food was good. The delivery arrived quickly and our meal was was delicious. This place has gotten terrible (HORRIBLE), I ordered a combination fried rice and they gave me yellow rice with big pieces of yellow onions in it, more onions than rice, it was greasy with some spoiled shrimp, no other meat. Went to this restaurant based off a hunch and it worked. Came into a clean restaurant that was crowded and packed. The buffet was very selected but had all the great things that the restaurant. Everything from vegetable fried rice to hot shrimp, was coming out the kitchen. I would recommend this place if you want good food. This restaurant has a Buffet on Sunday that's really good. If you have any food allergies, don't waste your time. They can't understand dairy free or glut free. The service was so slow that a party of two left after appetizers. We had a large group of twelve and one person in our group was served fifteen minutes before the rest of the food came out. The orders were also not correct, nor did the taste make up for anything, not great. An older reviewer said smells like cow, yep that was still correct. The Hunan beef was skimpy on vegetables--had one mushroom. The garlic chicken was skimpy on sauce and veggies. The sauce on both dishes seemed identical and bland. I sautéed onion, garlic, and red pepper in my wok and tossed in each dish (separately). The meat in each dish was tender and cooked perfectly. The crab Rangoon was delicious as well. I hadn't been to Tai Pan in years, but decided to dine there, Thursday night, as 2 Chinese nationals I was with wanted Chinese food. The waitress was very accommodating for them, since their english reading skills is ok. The food was good, but the reason for the 1 star is snobbish/racist attitude by the female owner. She went and checked on a table right next to us, that had come in several minutes after we did. She asked them about their meal and walked away. She never bothered to check on us nor did she speak as we left, but she she spoke to everyone else. Being a woc, those slights are very telling. To start off with my meal, I had their kiddy cocktail and it was amazing. Unlike most restaurants, in the kiddy cocktail they give the cherries and an orange, too! For my meal I had their sesame chicken and it was okay. They may have added a little to much sauce and there were stringy things on the bottom of the plate. I am pretty sure they were onions but I may be wrong. Overall, my meal was great and they are fast workers. After my drink, they had the food out in only 5 minutes (fast for a nice restaurant!)
