Indian cuisine is one of my favorites and since living in Bangalore I have a different look on restaurants here. I always find myself comparing which sometimes isn't fair. Taj did not disappoint on any level. The staff was extremely friendly and the dining room was very clean. I sat down and took a look at the menu and decided to go with my two litmus tests. Gobi Manchurian and a chicken makhani, both ordered medium hot with a couple butter naan. The food arrived quickly and hot. I tackled the gobi first. It was by far hands down the best gobi Manchurian I've had since I left India. Not too much sauce, crispy fry on the cauliflower and had that sweet tangy spicy flavor that was phenomenal. The portion size was fantastic. Every bite was sensational. Then I moved to the makhani. Again the flavor was amazing. Creamy and rich, not watery at all which is the usual problem. The spice level was fantastic and the medium hot was right around a standard Indian level The chicken pieces were plentiful and the portion was a standard copper bowl size. The naan also was impressive. Definitely made in house in their tandoor. Not thick and doughy but slightly crisp but pliable. Absolutely perfect to tear apart and eat the Mikhano. This is definitely my go to spot in Lexington when I visit. Well done to the staff, chef and owner for great experience. If you are hesitant to try Indian food for the first time, make this your spot and you'll be hooked for life. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g39588-d1085377-r949126252-Taj_India_Indian_Restaurant-Lexington_Kentucky.html#

Looking Out For The City ..

Wow. I have not been here in so long, but it really looks like they did a lot to the place. I came here because I wanted to try some Lamb Curry. I had to order in person because last weekend, I tried calling in and ordering online, and neither of those options worked. I decided not to order because my mind went to eating something else. Instead, I decided to come in person. When I was looking through the menu online, I noticed that they had Limca and Thums Up. GUYS....guys. These drinks are only sold in India (maybe somewhere in the U.S., I highly doubt it). Man, nostalgia. So when I went on trips to India with my parents, when I was younger, I had always seen drinks like Limca, not really Thums Up. This will be my first time drinking a Thums Up. If I had to suggest a beverage, I would suggest these. It is just because you cannot get them in the states. It is like going to a Mexican restaurant and getting a Mexican Coca Cola or a Jarritos. I also like how when I ordered the Lamb Curry, they gave me free rice with it. How cool is that? Bonus! It is like ordering ribs from Johnny Carino's and receiving a baguette with dipping sauce. -------------------------------------------------------------- I went back to try some goat curry today and I found that the gal with the white cap did not honor a discount card I received from the owner, many years ago. She did yesterday; however, not today. She seemed to make up the pricing. Goat curry is posted to be $16.99 on the website, but she put the price down as $18 flat, which with sales tax of 6% should be $18.01 Yesterday, I had the discount card and I was charged $18.12. This was a combined price from when I had ordered lamb curry $15.99 on their menu and with Thums Up, a beverage for $2.99. The discount (I think she gave me 10%, even though it clearly states 15% for take out). So $15.99+2.99 = 18.98-1.898 = 17.082. Now the sales tax is 6%. So $17.08 x 0.06 = $18.11 If I presented the same discount card today and I did not buy a beverage, it should have been $16.99 x 0.10 = $1.699, 16.99-1.699 = $15.291 x 6% (+ 0.917) = $16.20 Suggestion: Check your receipts because they do not itemize them. It is just one flat amount. Also, it would help if they put some sort of bell or something at the entrance. It does not help if people have to walk up and disturb other dining guests just to get customer service. Edit: I may consider leaving pricing alone. It seems like they gave me more goat curry by volume than lamb curry. Almost like three times the amount. Google states that goat is more expensive than lamb though? Weird.

A decent Indian meal. The chana masala was good but the spice level was a bit off; I asked for medium which should have been at least s little hot but was less than mild. Garlic naan was good but very thin. Same with the Raita. Generous portions and the menu is extensive, including some Indo-Chinese items that look interesting. Lots of folks in and out for takeout. Will be back try again and update review.

I ended up trying this restaurant because all the hip downtown spots with outdoor seating were packed. This place did not possess that sort of atmosphere, nor was it crowded 15 minutes prior to closing, but it was well worth the trip. My chola bhatura (chickpeas with fried bread for dipping) was delicious. I asked for it spicy and it was perceptibly so, but delivered a rich mix of flavors, enhanced even more by a side of pickled onions. I was surprised that it came with rice, as normally the bread replaces the rice in these dishes, but even after dipping two decent sized breads in there I still had leftover chickpea curry, and I'm certainly not disappointed at the overall generous amount of food. It's only one dish, but I have confidence that when I do come back, the rest will be just as good.

So called lentil soup.. which was watered down tasteless dal tarka

If I could get away without a star, trust me I would. So.. a few days ago, one rainy night, after a looooong session at work n in-between heavy rain, I felt the need for comfort food. As this place was on my way home, ave because I wanted to try it out as well, I ordered a couple of items. I called and placed my order... a lady picked up the phone. I asked her twice if the lentil soup was actual lentil soup, also called as mullligatawny soup. She assured me yes it was. So I ordered that and a chicken biryani. On reaching the place, my heels got caught in one of the many cracks on their steps n I almost pitched forward. There was hardly any patrons inside the establishment, which should have been a red flag. But I shrugged it off thinking it's after 9pm on a week night. There was one guy at the register who was also serving tables and running back n forth from the kitchen. There were loud Punjabi songs on tv, hell bent on giving me a headache. Anyway, I got the food n went home. When I opened up my order.. the lentil soup was a watered down version of yellow daal!!!!!!!! With even the tarka on it! The chicken biryani was smelly! And the rice were sooooo old! Broken up n knobby. I didn't even have the guts to open up the Raita! Veryyyy disappointing! Not recommended at all!!!!!

    Excited for Indian food!

The food is very good! We had a girls' night out and shared several dishes. I think my favorites are the lamb curry and butter chicken. I highly suggest checking out the food here. A little music would be a nice touch for the atmosphere. The space is huge and has a lot of potential but I think they need to do a bit more to create the ideal atmosphere.

I got take out at TAJ and it was beyond fantastic. The chutneys are house made, the servings were generous, and it was ready in 20 minutes.

I was told by locals to frequent here to order only Mediterranean food options as the other foods they offer aren't as good. (They offer Indian cuisine and fried fish/chicken) so I ordered the Greek shawarma chicken entree. I had a coupon that offered a slight discount for my lunch entree, but the employee said it didn't qualify for it. Not sure why, but that's fine. He was using a translator to speak with me, so may be some confusion. The food was mediocre, you do get plenty of food but it just lacks the flavor I expected. It was empty inside when I came in, which is always a worrisome feeling for me, but it wasn't too bad. I won't be back anytime soon but glad I atleast tried it out.

I went back here to redeem another BOGO coupon and this time I wanted to try their American food…read moreitem, a simple chicken sandwich. I also tried a lamb kebab wrap. When I got home, I found that the wrap was small (one might consider going with the shawarma equivalent) and the chicken sandwich was just tough and gross OH MY GOD or ALLAH or whomever). The chicken patty was square and thin and just tough to bite into and had a weird taste. The cheese is just cold (like why not melt it). The amount of grossness was equivalent to one eating a white bread mayo and banana sandwich, instant hurl. I gave it to my got dang cat and he smelled it and walked away. So the story here is to stick with the restaurant's specialty, the Mediterranean food items. And I wanted to try their fish sandwich, which I may reconsider after the chicken experience.
