They have loads of dvds/blurays, cds, some books/manga, old and new games and systems, and some awesome collectibles. The employees definitely were the cherry on top. He was telling us about the setup of the store, deals the have and about their trade in policies (which are the states policy and super intense to stop stolen items from being sold. They even do fingerprints). My husband is officially obsessed with this store and if he could live here he would. We had to go back to the hotel to grab a game to trade in and on the way back he said "I love this place. I know we aren't there but I'm going to talk like we are because my soul is there". I have no doubts we will be back. We ended up getting a few different things and we were pleased with everything.

Officially, Indy CD & Vinyl is Indiana's largest independent record store. They're a member of Coalition of Independent Music Stores and are locally owned, female-owned, latin-owned, and veteran owned. They sell both new and used CDs and vinyl (and i even saw a few 8-tracks, books, and more). They have always been known as supportive of the community and local artists whether buying them outright or selling on consignment. As nearly everyone knows, parking in Broad Ripple is a bit of a clusterf*** these days, though there's street parking (metered) and a few parking lots (paid). Sundays, the meters are free. Accessible parking is around in various lots or at meters, though not directly in front of the store. Broad Ripple Avenue stores are about 50/50 in terms of access, but I'm pleased to report that Indy CD & Vinyl is accessible for the most part. There's two sides to the store - one side with rows and rows of vinyl (and other items) that's narrow but workable. The other side is 808, a sort of in-store performance/event space that also has a variety of other items for sale and a few pinball machines. The people here are friendly and helpful. Rick Zeigler started the store in 1993 in Salt Lake City, though in 2001 he moved to its current spot (NOTE: I'm thinking he didn't call it Indy CD & Vinyl in Salt Lake, but I could be wrong! Ha.). In 2013, Zeigler sold the store to long-time store manager Anne Skinner and her husband. They continue to own it. Indy CD & Vinyl has all genres. I was pleased to see several John Hiatt releases (sadly, no Lilly Hiatt). They also carry turntables, needles, cartridges, accessories, etc. They also have a collectible section for music. I saw a Peanuts endcap that just left me in awe. As near as I can tell, they only purchase used vinyl. Honestly, I'd forgotten how much I love this place. Great vibes, great selection, great service, and just a lot of fun. Because I am a performer, I do have to note that the 808 stage is not wheelchair friendly (sad face), but I'm sticking with the 5-star because, if I'm being honest, far too many stages are not wheelchair friendly. Minor quibble for one of Central Indiana's shining stars.

Indy CD and Vinyl is like the old-school record stores I used to visit in my teens and 20s, oh so…read moremany years ago when I would actually purchase CDs and tapes. Except now, everything old is new again, and this record store actually has more records than anything else. So if you are a record collector, this is your place. They have new and used records, as well as quite a lot of CDs, cassettes, used DVDs, comic books and some records players and headphones for sale. It was my oldest son's idea to visit, because he loves record stores, and is proving to have impeccable taste in music. (He gets it from his mom.) He loves rap and hip-hop the most, and was a little disappointed that there weren't more albums by his favorite artists. I told him that I think album collecting tends to skew more toward rock and pop listeners, and people who listen to rap and hip-hop listen more digitally. That's my theory, but in any case, you should know that the hip-hop section is small. But the rock and pop section is large. This record store is a decent size, and in fact, there's a sign outside that says that they will soon be expanding. My son thought that the store was huge, but bless his ignorant heart: He didn't grow up going to the country's greatest record store, Amoeba Records in Hollywood, like I did. This is no Amoeba, but there's no place like Amoeba, and for a record store in central Indiana, Indy CD and Vinyl is really great. Two neat things about Indy CD and Vinyl: They have video games and pinball machines that you can play at the back of the store (for a couple of quarters). They also have a listening station, where you can scan the barcode of an album and listen to it before you buy it. It wasn't working when we visited, but that's cool that they offer that. No one in my household actually owns a record player, CD player or cassette player, so our visit was merely to look around and imagine the things we would buy if we had analog media players. My son did get a Tyler The Creator poster, though, so he was happy.

Updating my review of Luna Music and bumping it up from four stars to five. This is because a) Luna…read moredeserves all five stars; and b) it's been nine (!!) years since my last review. In my last review, I think I complained about being a tired mom with macaroni and cheese stains on my pants. Well, nine years later, I'm still a mom but fortunately less tired, the stains on my pants are from red wine and vegan tzatziki, and the kids I made macaroni and cheese for have grown up and are very interested in music. And they ask me to take them to Luna Music. I'm always happy to oblige. My oldest kid love Luna Music because he can find albums for the bands that he listens to. Bands and artists that are not on my radar at all (Blood Orange? Anyone, anyone? Bueller?), but he loves them, and it makes him happy to find them here in vinyl. Luna has a lot of new music on vinyl. This is the place to visit in Indianapolis if you're looking for any kind of new music. They are on top of it. In fact, I subscribe to their weekly newsletter just to keep abreast of the new music that drops every week. Luna Music keeps me young and able to relate to my children, who have astounding musical taste for their age. Luna skews toward records, but they also have a smaller selection of used CDs, as well as a collection of used cassette tapes that are smaller still. You can also find zines, local artwork, greeting cards, record players and other fun things. The people who work here are super friendly and not at all snobby. There are no Jack-Black-from-High-Fidelity people here!

I'm not a teenage boy (as far as you know), but I also think Disc Replay is quite neat. It has an amazing collection of used video games for a variety of platforms, like Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo DS, Gameboy, Wii, and even games for systems that old heads like me were brought up on, like the original Nintendo, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. The prices for these used games are suuuuuper good. Like, I was seeing price tags with $1.99 and $3.99 on them. We picked up a Plants vs. Zombies Nintendo DS game for $14.99, which according to my kid was a good price for a game he really wanted. They sell everything from refurbished Meta Quest VR headsets to Tamagotchi, which I didn't even know kids played still! Wow! A blast from the past. That's another thing: If you're a person of a certain age and you want to wax nostalgic about your middle school/high school years to the teenager you brought with you, visit Disc Replay. In the back of the store are aisles and aisles of used DVDs and Blu-Ray movies. My teenager asked me if this is what Blockbuster used to look like. Bless his heart. I said no and patiently described the wonder that was Blockbuster. Kids today just won't ever know; it's a dang shame. But thankfully, physical media is still a thing, and if you want to pick up a DVD copy of You Don't Mess with the Zohan, you can do that here. The people who work at Disc Replay are friendly and know their stuff. They answered our questions, and you can tell they don't only sell video games and movies, but they partake in this culture, too.

Very poor managed with very poor communication. I've also had friends experience similar issues at the store would not recommend to anyone.

I've been a regular at their other location for a few years and I'm glad to see them expanding (and opening up a place closer to where I live).

You can't look at the vinyl at all. So weird, like the stuff in there is rare. It's not! And Our opinions of what's NM are pretty far apart. The guy is nice enough, and we always seem to chit chat about the grand old days of collecting which I appreciate. But what is just nuts,!this last time in, a couple boxes of records were on the ground and low and behold, it looks like some good stuff. Blue Note re from the mid 70's. Frank Zappa. When I started digging he stopped me and said they weren't for sale and have been around for 10'years. They weren't his personal collection, he just had no interest in pricing or selling them. I popped into Karma Records after a few times driving by it. Who knew where was such a slapper of a…read morerecord store on the east side? Apparently, many people knew, because Karma has been around since 1970, and it's the oldest record store in Indianapolis. OK! I'm obviously late to the game. Usually, I visit record stores just to browse, but this time, I visited to find a specific album. But when I asked the kind people behind the counter to look up the album for me, I found out the album that I had in mind was actually out of print! So I could order it online, but it would cost like five hundred dollars or some obscene amount. The helpful people at Karma offered to order other albums by the same artist. But I didn't want that, and instead just browsed the selection of records that Karma. There are a lot of records here. Surely, if you're not dead set on a specific out-of-print record like me, you will find something here. They also have CDs. And the cool people at Karma are willing to order whatever you want (assuming it's not out of print), and it will show up at the shop a few days later. Man, you didn't ask, but this place smells like incense, I tell you what. Which is appropriate, I guess, because they sell incense here. I just mention in case you're sensitive to incense.

While indie record stores are kinda sorta experiencing a rebirth, the truth is about the only survivor for chains is FYE. Is FYE a record store? Not really. It's more of a pop culture store, a modestly sized chain that has adapted successfully to changing times even if, at times, it feels more like a flea market of pop culture fun than it does anything resembling a record store. This spot is in Castleton Square Mall. Do I go to FYE as much as I went to Camelot? Not a chance, but I do enjoy some of their pop culture items and they have a pretty groovin' used selection for music and video that I do still kind of adore. They also offer toys, collectibles, a little bit of tech, apparel, and some home furnishings (very light). If you're expecting to find that obscure indie band's latest release, give up the idea. Unless it's in used, it won't be here. Yes, they carry new stuff but it's mostly the "guaranteed to sell" items and not that band you saw in a 50-person venue. Yes, they have a backstage pass Platinum ($13.99 a month. A month. Um, no.). While some reviews report being charged for it despite saying no, I've had zero issues with inappropriate charges. There's a $25 a year Backstage VIP that is more reasonable, but I can't think of anything in this store that would cause me to pay for VIP status. In terms of access, this is a mall. This means that there's plenty of accessible parking. The front entrance has automated doors, while alternate entrances have traditional doorways. The mall itself is solid with access, though primary accessible bathrooms are toward the food court. The store itself has wide aisles and good room to move around. If you're one of those people who prefers to shop without being bothered, that's pretty easy to do here. If you want help, you can get it (sometimes with a little effort). You've got to respect FYE's ability to adapt to the changing times. If you're into pop culture - anime, Funko, games, etc., - then it may be worth a visit to check this out for mostly mainstream items. They've got pretty good prices and I'm still pretty high on their used music and videos, though they have shrunk their collections. For the most part, FYE just makes me miss Camelot and the good old days.
