Updating my review of Luna Music and bumping it up from four stars to five. This is because a) Luna deserves all five stars; and b) it's been nine (!!) years since my last review. In my last review, I think I complained about being a tired mom with macaroni and cheese stains on my pants. Well, nine years later, I'm still a mom but fortunately less tired, the stains on my pants are from red wine and vegan tzatziki, and the kids I made macaroni and cheese for have grown up and are very interested in music. And they ask me to take them to Luna Music. I'm always happy to oblige. My oldest kid love Luna Music because he can find albums for the bands that he listens to. Bands and artists that are not on my radar at all (Blood Orange? Anyone, anyone? Bueller?), but he loves them, and it makes him happy to find them here in vinyl. Luna has a lot of new music on vinyl. This is the place to visit in Indianapolis if you're looking for any kind of new music. They are on top of it. In fact, I subscribe to their weekly newsletter just to keep abreast of the new music that drops every week. Luna Music keeps me young and able to relate to my children, who have astounding musical taste for their age. Luna skews toward records, but they also have a smaller selection of used CDs, as well as a collection of used cassette tapes that are smaller still. You can also find zines, local artwork, greeting cards, record players and other fun things. The people who work here are super friendly and not at all snobby. There are no Jack-Black-from-High-Fidelity people here! read more

As I get older, I'll admit that I don't quite visit record stores as much as I did as a teen and young adult. I've grown up with Luna Music. I suppose I started with Karma, however, by the time I hit 30-years-old Luna became my jam. Luna has been around for about 29 years. I started at a location near 86th and Ditch, though that spot is long gone and Luna exists solely at 52nd and College. This is a great location for Luna Music - even better with a bookstore having opened on the same corner. Every time I come here, I find myself thinking this could be out of "High Fidelity." Seriously, this is a great record store vibe with a collection of vinyl including 10,000 new and 25,000 pre-owned. They also carry some clothing items, electronics care equipment, books, candles/incense, magazines, local zines, new/used turntables and equipment, and Luna has been very known for carrying local artists and authors. They host in-store concerts including artists like The Black Keys, St. Vincent, GBV, Sean Lennon, John Mayer, Low, and others. The employees are always friendly, super knowledgeable, and not nearly as snarky as Jack Black in "High Fidelity." Well, maybe after you leave the store with your Captain & Tennille vinyl. Luna has a monthly sound subscription. They buy vinyl and this is really just one of Indy's real gems. In terms of access, they're pretty good. This corner can be a bit tricky for parking - either along College Avenue or on a side street is your best bet. There's not a private lot here. Once you find parking, however, the door is level to the ground (slight lip to get in) and the inside I've never had issues with at all. Again, employees are friendly enough that help is available. Record stores sure aren't as common as they used to be. Indy should be mighty grateful we still have Luna Music. read more

I always see Luna music stickers and after years of living in Indy I finally went! I love record stores even tho I'm a poser (lol) b/c I just love the vibe but do not buy records. However, if you're like me you can check out the super cute cards they sell and they have zines, books, etc. As of late June 2022 masks were REQUIRED. Fairly late to the vinyl game, but wanted to stop by the infamous Luna music shop to check out their selection. Sadly, two times I went, they were closed due to hours. Finally came during a weekend and was satisfied with their selection, but those prices....that's where it falls short for me. I love supporting local but when a place is easily $5-10 more than nearby competition, it makes it hard. I walked out with one but hope to get back and check out their used/discounted ones next time! read more

Luna is my go-to record store for multiple reasons. Not only is it fully stocked, easy to browse, and fun to look at, but THE STAFF is amazing!!! They are so nice and helpful. I will admit, I'm a pop girlie. I love pop music and like to buy those albums on vinyl. I have been to soooo many record stores that make me feel horrible for not picking the "cool, underground indie" music. I've been scoffed at, not treated as nicely, and have heard employees make fun of customers that buy the same thing. True music snob stuff. The Luna employees do NOT make me feel that way. In fact, many times they go out of their way to say I made a good choice or ask what my favorite song on the album is! They are unbelievably kind!! They are always attentive, say hello whenever I walk in, and ask if I need help finding anything. Make Luna music your go-to record store like me! It's the holiday season and a record was on my list of things to get so this place went to the top of my list. I was able to browse their website to see if they had what I was looking for which is convenient if you prefer ordering stuff online. Cool shop, friendly employees - you know how some music shops can be a bit ... snobby? This wasn't our experience at Luna. I took my 13-year-old in to get her first vinyl and we had a great time. She bought a mystery pack of 10 LPs for $10 and it was hilarious opening it when we got home. Their prices do seem to be a little higher than, say, Target, but their selection is amazing and I'd definitely rather pay a little more and support a small, local shop. They also have free stickers and match books at the register - so fun! read more

Great spot for amazing finds. Huge selection of new and used vinyl from various genres. I mostly look for 90s (originals and represses), Punk/Ska, Pop, Alt Rock, and New Release vinyl. This shop had all that and more. Every time I enter a record shop, I debate within my mind whether to get back into vinyl or simply stay with cd's or streaming. It's nice to know that at Luna Music, you don't have to choose between cd's or vinyl...they have both! And the collection here isn't just the pop stars of the moment. They had a wide variety of artists here...maybe not every record in the discography, but a solid representation of the artist's work. Most of the previously unused (I find it hard to call a 40 year old record "New") vinyl that I checked out were running in the mid $20s range. The used items, which are separated (yea!) are considerably lower. It looks like this place stays in touch with the local music scene as well, so that's another bonus for stopping by. Parking is a little hit or miss with reliance upon street parking (south side of 52nd to the west of College is where I found free parking.) Luna Music is my favorite place to go! I love that it is a small business, the people get to know you, and they are always willing to go above and beyond. I love that I can come in and order vinyl if they don't have it in store. Whenever I get that call from Luna my day always gets brighter. I have spent a little under $1k in the 6 months I've been going to Luna and I will continue to spend here because of how amazing they are!! P.S. After having lunch at Aristocratic's and visiting A Bit Whimsy next door we wandered into Luna's Music. I haven't been in a true record store for years and I was feeling very nostalgic. The genre was impressive from popular to obscure (lots of rap/hip hop, pop, rock, soul, country, blues, jazz). Some of the bins were a bit tight to flip through but easy enough to handle. It was nice to see a selection of new albums to the store so you didn't have to revisit each section repeatedly if you're a regular. I enjoyed flipping through the variety of the staff's recommended albums. Two other helpful areas were the Hot Sellers and the 50% off section. They sell used CD's as well as vinyl. The prices are reasonable, and yes, Amazon is cheaper, but you're supporting a local business here. We also found turntables, t-shirts, vinyl cleaner, accessories, coffee mugs and posters. The guys working here were very laid back, friendly and allowed you to browse without hovering. The music playing overhead, the atmosphere and the half-hour we browsed was very relaxing. We just need to come back when we have more time for a deep dive. Really cool music store to visit. Stop by and Shop local! read more

I've placed many orders on line with them and only on rare occasions the record has been out of stock. They quickly refund my money without a hassle. If they have to special order a record they hold the order until it's in (which I prefer, and notify me of that). Simply put you can't go wrong ordering from Luna Music it is run by Record and music lovers, for Record and music lovers. I plan on stopping by a shopping in person since they are in my old stomping grounds. There is no doubt that there will be music playing and a warm welcome. This review is solely for the used CD section. I used to come to Luna every time I visited Indy (once or twice a year). I'd always walk out with a stack of discs. The prices weren't great. However, they had a buy 3 get one free deal (it may have been buy 4 get 1 free). When I came last Xmas they no longer had that deal and that was the first time I left empty handed. I decided to return today to give it another chance because it is Small Business Saturday. The prices for used CD's are very high, often more than they would cost new online. Most of the used discs are $6.99 and $7.99. While that might be a fair price for a newer release, those are the prices for much older CD's (e.g. The Cure - "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" original CD not a remaster). The one that blew my mind is they have 3 opened promo copies of the latest White Denim CD "Performance" for $14.99! You can buy that new on Amazon at the time I typed this for $11.49. Of course you won't find these under the W section, for some reason they are in the M section. To top it all off the discs are packed in the shelves so tight that you must remove a few in order to flip through them. Add to that the crates of vinyl that jut out from underneath the shelves that force you to lean sideways as you browse. I truly love going to record stores and shopping for music, but today will be my last visit to Luna. I fully realize that they mainly sell vinyl and that most of their customers are not looking for used CD's. For the record the employees are always very nice and there's consistently good music playing in the store. read more

They were playing great music and I even asked one of the employees for a suggestion on some rock albums. This is a bookstore. They have an extensive collection of awesome books. When I say awesome... what I mean is that there is a particular o'euvre of reading that suits a Record Store: Eggers, Gladwell *and the like*. Then they went and added 33 1/3 collections and authors like Roland Barthes. Barthes makes my heart sink and mind expand. And the fact that I can lean on a rack of discs and read Barthes's diary in a record store makes me really, really happy. There is a great lack of bookstores in Indy, and if it's a record store that gives us the best book collection then sobeit -- it's there. Read on. read more

why anyone would shop at this thrift store is beyond me!!! most of their vinyl records are $1 records they are charing $10-20 for. i am always disappointed when i leave there. all their valuable records ate in g condition and they are asking more than what most are asking for! i could have spend some serious money on some records they had if their pricing was competitive or wven close to same price or quality. skip the trip and go to another indy cd & vinyl record store or buy online and save money and time and get better quality. i dont think ill ever be back. Luna Music is the ultimate Indianapolis destination for music lovers. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, Luna's storefront has remained closed but the website is available for online ordering and the store offers a contact-free pick-up choice if you do not want to wait for shipping. You can call the store from 12-4 every day to speak with an employee. Luna also is interested in buying old vinyl that is still in good condition. Luna also offers a branded apparel and accessories line to show off the love for Luna. Before the pandemic I was able to visit several times a purchased some Mac Miller vinyl. The store itself is breathtaking and the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful with any questions you may have. Luna typically hosts awesome in-store events but has been forced to switch everything to an online format. On Friday, November 27th, Luna is hosting a black Friday event with full stock on a list of special releases. There is limited street parking around Luna's storefront, but it is usually not too difficult to find a nearby spot. The website, lunamusic.net, has all the information you could need and a vast collection of music recommendations of all kinds. Luna is easily my favorite record store in the wonderful state of indiana and the beautiful city of Indy. They have such a wide variety of records I would often get lost. From new to used, to new albums and old albums. I would be stuck in there for hours always trying to make up my mind on what to buy. Their staff is always awesome too. They are always helping you make up your mind, exposing you to something you've never heard, and having good conversations when you are there looking around. Please don't ever let places like these close their doors! Luna is one of my favorite spots in Broadripple. The staff is incredibly well-versed, welcoming, non-judgmental, and they've always got such a beautiful mix of tunes vibrating through the store. Their collection is expansive and touches on each genre pretty evenly, I'd say. The prices vary, but they're fair. They accept used vinyl and CDs, but just like any resale item, do not expect to get what you paid for it. Luna has to make money too! And they resell the items at very affordable prices. I love flipping through the used/sale section. I've found some treasures hidden in there. They host a record store day event too, so don't miss it then next time it comes around! read more

I used to live in Bloomington, and was spoiled by the fantastic record stores and their even more fantastic prices. For a while, I was under the impression that Indy CD and Vinyl was the only game in town if you wanted to score some vinyl records. Clearly I was mistaken. Luna has a fantastic selection, and they don't put a "cool tax" on their vinyl like other establishments do. The act of flipping through a huge stack of records to find just...the right...one...is a wonderful way to spend a few hours. If you're wanting to make the switch to the Best Music Format or just go browsing for a while, definitely hop over to Luna. read more

A total hipster record store complete with crumbling floor and hand written signs -- the NOT hipster part is the staff is always super friendly. It doesn't matter if you're buying current or ancient, new or used, a staff member always has a genuine comment/conversation about at least on the the records you're buying. I've found the prices to be a little less than the competition in Broad Ripple. The only downside is they have fewer labels for artists -- but hey, simple fix is to know the alphabet! read more
