I decided to hang out for a bit this lazy Sunday, and I finally got a chance to make a return visit…read moreto Indy CD & Vinyl, an indie record store with a specialty in vinyl that is easily one of the top, if not the top, in Central Indiana. Officially, Indy CD & Vinyl is Indiana's largest independent record store. They're a member of Coalition of Independent Music Stores and are locally owned, female-owned, latin-owned, and veteran owned. They sell both new and used CDs and vinyl (and i even saw a few 8-tracks, books, and more). They have always been known as supportive of the community and local artists whether buying them outright or selling on consignment. As nearly everyone knows, parking in Broad Ripple is a bit of a clusterf*** these days, though there's street parking (metered) and a few parking lots (paid). Sundays, the meters are free. Accessible parking is around in various lots or at meters, though not directly in front of the store. Broad Ripple Avenue stores are about 50/50 in terms of access, but I'm pleased to report that Indy CD & Vinyl is accessible for the most part. There's two sides to the store - one side with rows and rows of vinyl (and other items) that's narrow but workable. The other side is 808, a sort of in-store performance/event space that also has a variety of other items for sale and a few pinball machines. The people here are friendly and helpful. Rick Zeigler started the store in 1993 in Salt Lake City, though in 2001 he moved to its current spot (NOTE: I'm thinking he didn't call it Indy CD & Vinyl in Salt Lake, but I could be wrong! Ha.). In 2013, Zeigler sold the store to long-time store manager Anne Skinner and her husband. They continue to own it. Indy CD & Vinyl has all genres. I was pleased to see several John Hiatt releases (sadly, no Lilly Hiatt). They also carry turntables, needles, cartridges, accessories, etc. They also have a collectible section for music. I saw a Peanuts endcap that just left me in awe. As near as I can tell, they only purchase used vinyl. Honestly, I'd forgotten how much I love this place. Great vibes, great selection, great service, and just a lot of fun. Because I am a performer, I do have to note that the 808 stage is not wheelchair friendly (sad face), but I'm sticking with the 5-star because, if I'm being honest, far too many stages are not wheelchair friendly. Minor quibble for one of Central Indiana's shining stars.

Except now, everything old is new again, and this record store actually has more records than anything else. So if you are a record collector, this is your place. They have new and used records, as well as quite a lot of CDs, cassettes, used DVDs, comic books and some records players and headphones for sale. It was my oldest son's idea to visit, because he loves record stores, and is proving to have impeccable taste in music. (He gets it from his mom.) He loves rap and hip-hop the most, and was a little disappointed that there weren't more albums by his favorite artists. I told him that I think album collecting tends to skew more toward rock and pop listeners, and people who listen to rap and hip-hop listen more digitally. That's my theory, but in any case, you should know that the hip-hop section is small. But the rock and pop section is large. This record store is a decent size, and in fact, there's a sign outside that says that they will soon be expanding. My son thought that the store was huge, but bless his ignorant heart: He didn't grow up going to the country's greatest record store, Amoeba Records in Hollywood, like I did. This is no Amoeba, but there's no place like Amoeba, and for a record store in central Indiana, Indy CD and Vinyl is really great. Two neat things about Indy CD and Vinyl: They have video games and pinball machines that you can play at the back of the store (for a couple of quarters). They also have a listening station, where you can scan the barcode of an album and listen to it before you buy it. It wasn't working when we visited, but that's cool that they offer that. No one in my household actually owns a record player, CD player or cassette player, so our visit was merely to look around and imagine the things we would buy if we had analog media players. My son did get a Tyler The Creator poster, though, so he was happy.

It seems that most prices are pretty reasonable among the vendors and it seems there's always some kind of sale going on either store wide or by an individual vendor. I can normally find some kind of treasure every time I come in and the same lady is always at the front with a smile and a welcome.

In my last review, I think I complained about being a tired mom with macaroni and cheese stains on my pants. Well, nine years later, I'm still a mom but fortunately less tired, the stains on my pants are from red wine and vegan tzatziki, and the kids I made macaroni and cheese for have grown up and are very interested in music. And they ask me to take them to Luna Music. I'm always happy to oblige. My oldest kid love Luna Music because he can find albums for the bands that he listens to. Bands and artists that are not on my radar at all (Blood Orange? Anyone, anyone? Bueller?), but he loves them, and it makes him happy to find them here in vinyl. Luna has a lot of new music on vinyl. This is the place to visit in Indianapolis if you're looking for any kind of new music. They are on top of it. In fact, I subscribe to their weekly newsletter just to keep abreast of the new music that drops every week. Luna Music keeps me young and able to relate to my children, who have astounding musical taste for their age. Luna skews toward records, but they also have a smaller selection of used CDs, as well as a collection of used cassette tapes that are smaller still. You can also find zines, local artwork, greeting cards, record players and other fun things. The people who work here are super friendly and not at all snobby. There are no Jack-Black-from-High-Fidelity people here!

And for vinyl they've got local artists, popular music and old vintage stuff as well! They also have a cool corner with art in the back and in the first room they have a bunch of cool art in drawers. They allow local artists to each have a drawer for their work and I just think that's SO cool!! They're queer friendly and definitely feel like a safe place! At one time had a donation box for menstrual products but someone destroyed it and I'm not sure if it's still there but they're just a great small business in Irvington that really adds so much to our community!

But when you find it, you'll see that these cats have a lotta good stuff. Mostly, you will find streetwear and novelty t-shirts and accessories at Naptown Thrift. Shirts run the gamut from band t-shirts, Mickey Mouse, sports, hobbies and other things. Have you been looking for a shirt that says, "It's five o'clock somewhere?" Do you need a hoodie that shows your undying love for Dayton Beach? Or maybe a ball cap with a black Labrador Retriever on it? This is the place for you. Speaking of ball caps, you'll also find lots of hats and caps, Indiana artwork for sale, posters, denim (both shorts and long pants), jackets and lots more. This thrift store skews toward the adult male, which is fine by me. I feel like we need more good vintage stores for the dudes around here. Dudes need places to find sick threads. Naptown Thrift is a great place to find such sick threads and wearable treasures.

The proprietor was friendly and engaging. He even suggested a few other nearby shops for us to check out. Several walls were filled with vintage local sport art. Colorful team hats hung from the ceiling. This is definitely a man cave dream shop. Racks were filled with vintage logo jackets, tee shirts and other sports wear. The place is really interesting. I didn't buy anything as I was really looking for houseware and I don't have a man cave. Parking is plentiful in the strip mall lot.

I popped into Karma Records after a few times driving by it. Who knew where was such a slapper of a…read morerecord store on the east side? Apparently, many people knew, because Karma has been around since 1970, and it's the oldest record store in Indianapolis. OK! I'm obviously late to the game. Usually, I visit record stores just to browse, but this time, I visited to find a specific album. But when I asked the kind people behind the counter to look up the album for me, I found out the album that I had in mind was actually out of print! So I could order it online, but it would cost like five hundred dollars or some obscene amount. The helpful people at Karma offered to order other albums by the same artist. But I didn't want that, and instead just browsed the selection of records that Karma. There are a lot of records here. Surely, if you're not dead set on a specific out-of-print record like me, you will find something here. They also have CDs. And the cool people at Karma are willing to order whatever you want (assuming it's not out of print), and it will show up at the shop a few days later. Man, you didn't ask, but this place smells like incense, I tell you what. Which is appropriate, I guess, because they sell incense here. I just mention in case you're sensitive to incense.

I was so impressed by this little shop. I walked in and everything looked so nice and clean and well kept and they had so many gems to find all over. I had such a good time there and I will most definitely be returning. The staff was sweet and greeted us the moment we walked in and the prices were unbeatable. In an economy like we have this day in age, it's thrift shops like this that keep people sane and being able to shop for something nice without feeling like you're wallets being squeezed for every penny. They're not just good prices, they're fantastic for family's who need a little more bang for their buck and you still walk out feeling like a winner cause they've got great stuff.
