Living in the small-town that we do, the dining scene is in most regards not what would qualify as "substantial" but instead more along the lines of "adequate on occasion". The franchise and gastro-pub Bishops Arms opened here fairly recent, so we decided to slip in for a bite to eat and get a feel for the place. I've eaten at Bishops Arms in other cities before, and while they haven't wowed me with their food on previous occasions, their assortment of whiskey have always been substantial and well above par. Interestingly enough, they had just switched the menu this very day so everything was brand new. It had some quite interesting dishes like starters such as seared scallops with cauliflower purée, side of pork, and burnt butter. Or why not brisket with mushroom stew, and mustard crème on toast. Being a bit pressed for time we opted for only a main course and I had duck breast with fried potato chips, gooseberry chutney, and cauliflower purée. My wife had their chuck-roll burger with dressing, onion marmalade, coleslaw, and French fries. My duck was nicely cooked, pink in the middle with the fatty side nicely scored and rendered down. However, it wasn't an entire duck breast on the plate but two larger pieces of one breast - a cheap and bad move. The cauliflower purée had nice flavor as well as texture. Gooseberry chutney was a nice and flavorsome combination both for the duck as well as the potato chips. The chips however were seriously over-seasoned with salt and cold as ice. That dish would have been so much better with hot potato chips straight from the fryer. I also seriously lacked some sort of vegetables on the plate that goes well with a bit of duck. My wife's burger was also nicely cooked, a bit pink in the middle and juicy. Buns lightly charred/toasted and still warm, and in particular the onion marmalade was a perfect compliment. Fries nicely done (and hot) and not dripping with oil, but the amount of dressing was a bit off-putting the way it had been spread out over the plate. One thing that also was a bit off-putting not related to the food was the fact that the staff working there was standing behind the bar, giggling over their smart-phones, as well as the chefs that came out of the kitchen standing their in the bar too, instead of tending to customers and being professional about the people coming in there to spend their money. It is a quite unprofessional way to act in a restaurant. In all it's a gastro-pub part of a franchise, and the food is acceptable. But is it worth it? No, particularly for the reasons/problems mentioned above. Had I gotten a whole breast, warm potato chips and vegetables on my dish I'd have definitely been more inclined towards coming back and try another dish. As of now, I'd rather give it a pass and go somewhere else.

Time for an update..! But, to put it mildly, it's not going to be in their favor…read more So the kids chose where they wanted to go for dinner after an entire day at the harbor festival in Luleå. Mine and Erika's fear was of course met; O'Learys. I'm so terribly fed up with it, but the things us parents do for our kids, right? I don't mind giving a place a second (or third) chance, but this was by far the worst time ever. I ordered Joe Thornton's Striploin Steak that comes with garlic fried mushrooms, cajun butter, vegetables (carrots and haricos verts) and a choice of potatoes. Chose potato gratin and asked for my meat to be cooked rare. The moment my plate was served I only had to look at it to see it wasn't cooked properly, it looked more towards medium well. To make the initial matter worse is that the waiter said: - Striploin, well done - Ehrm, no, I ordered mine rare... - Oh sorry, I meant rare... - Well, wait just a second... And I took the steak knife, cut into the meat and said: - Look, this is almost well-done. I want a new one - Of course, we'll fix it So he wandered off with my plate while my daughter fortunately enjoyed her bbq-glazed spare ribs, our youngest son his portion of fries, and my wife her rib-eye (that she ordered medium but came more closely towards medium rare). I then got my new striploin and once again it seemed a bit off, but now against the other end of the spectrum. Bleak in color, almost no crispy char and the side cap of fat wasn't crispy or rendered down. When I cut into it it was more towards bleu instead of rare. Didn't finish the whole steak, barely even half of it. The vegetables tasted of nothing, almost cold (I suspect they didn't change them in between my pieces of meat (something you simply just do, end of discussion). The only positive note was the potato gratin, it was well-seasoned and creamy, but no potato in the world can salvage an otherwise catastrophic plate where the steak is supposed to be the hero. The only thing I'm left with is a queasy stomach and I may well be on the way towards food-poisoning, at least that's what it feels like. Undoubtedly the worst restaurant dinner experience in a long time.

We felt it was time for lunch so popped into Friends by B.O. for something to eat. They actually have a quite extensive lunch menu as well as an open outdoor area outside drenched in sun (weather permitting, naturally) that felt like a really good choice. We parked our behinds in a cozy corner sofa with tables and went inside to order. Inside it is modern, almost the typical Scandinavian design with the combination of wood, grey/beige, and some decor/furniture with bright vibrant colors. I love that style, so a plus for me! The staff was however a bit on the negative side. Uninterested with the attitude of I-really-don't-want-to-be-here-but-I-have-to that doesn't really inspire a positive environment for a paying customer. That said, I ordered a plate of ceasar salad for me and my daughter. My friends also had a ceasar salad and a burger. They were both happy with their food and I'm definitely inclined to agree. The crutons were crispy and tasty with salt and herbs, generous with the parmesan, the dressing coated all of the salad and the chicken skewers were moist, well seasoned, and nicely cooked. So a big plus for the environment, decor, and food. Big negative on the staff. A-OK in my book.
