Based on all the reviews and the fact it's very close to me I went into T&S wanting to love it, but was unfortunately pretty disappointed. In my mind this place was going to be just as good as Door 74 or Oldenhof but a lot closer. I was excited to find a new local drink spot that I could stumble to and fro. The atmosphere is nice and having food as an option is great. The problem we found was that they don't necessarily bring you what you order. My friend ordered the Abe Lincoln which is an old fashion with knob creek rye as the liquor. When it came he immediately said it was wrong. When we asked the bartender he explained that the rye is hard to find so he just used something else instead. He then left to find the list of actually available bourbons and ryes (not to be confused with what they advertise in their menu or what you think you are buying). He never returned. We tracked down another bartender who was more accommodating, but gave us the same line about rye being hard to find. If it's so hard to find then don't put it in your menu and charge people extra for that specific brand! They replaced the drink, but never apologized or acted like they should be ashamed for switching to a cheaper booze, and never would have even mentioned it had they not been called out. We got the feeling that this was a pretty common practice at T&S by their nonchalant explanation and that we should just accept that they don't honor their menu. I'm guessing very few people ever call them out on this so they probably get away with it most of the time. Not impressed and certainly not worth the price if they aren't going to be honest with what they are serving. If you are paying a premium price for something you should at least get what you ordered (maybe even a premium product or service too, but that can wait for another review). Compared to Door 74 or Oldenhof, T&S has an uphill battle ahead of them. I trust those places because they deliver quality consistently and put an emphasis on their craft as well as the experience. They don't need to fake their menu and would never dream of doing it even if they thought they could. I'll probably go back out of sheer convenience and also to give them another shot, but I will be very skeptical and will be sitting where I can watch what's actually going into my drink.... read more

The atmosphere of this place is very speakeasy-like which just made us more excited to try some of the drinks they had in their menu. For food, we ordered the truffle risotto, skewers, and the foie gras sliders. I definitely made the mistake of thinking this place would be a dinner spot, because the portions are very small. It's definitely more for snacking, especially because the prices for food are not cheap. So if you're looking for a filling dinner place, look elsewhere. That being said, the risotto and sliders were delicious!! The skewers were pretty average, I would not recommend ordering those. For drinks, my boyfriend ordered one of their speciality Manhattans, and I got the Pink Lady. We both loved our drinks. The Pink Lady was probably the most beautiful drink I've ever had. The staff was super friendly and we ordered a couple of fantastic cocktails. The menu is all small plates, so we ordered 3 things and planned to get some more afterwards. The steak was good, but the fish course was so-so, and the Gyoza were terrible! The broth the Gyoza was served in was completely unseasoned and the the dumpling were gross. We paid our bill and left, still hungry. The prices are high and totally out of whack with the quality of the food. This was probably my most favorite bar of the night. We got lucky and were able to get a table Saturday evening. Our hostess gave us more attention than most places we've been to (the USA way of serving versus the European way), and we ordered a cheese plate which was satisfactory. Hands down, probably the best cocktail bar I've ever been to. Tales and spirits has a tremendous drink menu, and amazing service. The guys really know how to sell a drink. They have a whole page dedicated for Old Fashioned's. They won me there. I ordered the Charlie Brown which is Michter's Rye, roasted peanut liqueur, bitter truth creole bitters with orange zest. Such a great cocktail. The drinks, service and ambiance are some of the best I've ever experienced. I came back the next night and got the Abraham Lincoln which is Knob Creek rye, maple syrup, angostura & regans orange bitters with orange zest. Cannot day enough good things about the service here. For a bar that is consistently rated in the best bars of the world, you will not find any pretentiousness or arrogance in the experience. We took a table outside with blankets as we did not want to wait for a table inside, however the host came to offer us a table inside within minutes of us being seated. As we'd already gotten comfortable by then, we refused and I would recommend that to others as well. Wow. Wow. Wow. I just got home from 12 days in Paris, Belgium and Netherlands. This restaurant we came to on our last day, and sealed the deal on a spectacular trip. This restaurant was hands down my favorite out every single place I've visited on this trip, and my past trips. The atmosphere is awesome, and the server was friendly, helpful and suggestive but never pushy. Make sure you read the menu thoroughly! A lot of their drinks have multiple types of alcohol and they are just as strong as everyone else says they are. I opted for A New Hope - a Mezcal cocktail that was beautifully smoky. We ordered four dishes to share. Lobster (least favorite, but still delicious. This portion came with some sort of mashed white stuff? Thought it was potatoes at first, but it has a coarser texture. Serving size was generous. Scallops - very small serving, two U12 scallops, but let me tell you, the flavor packed quite a punch! Make sure you dip the scallop in every sauce on the plate for the full experience! This third and fourth dish were actually the same because we loved it so much. The truffle risotto. Holy crap. It was deliciously creamy, heavy on the truffle but not overpowering and the risotto was cooked to perfection. This serving size was slightly small to average. This is a MUST TRY DISH. For desert, he offered us an bread pudding that was not on the menu. Tbh I don't remember everything that was in it. What I do remember, however, is the sake infused ice cream that topped the two pieces of bread. I was hesitant because I don't like sake, but I honestly couldn't taste it at all. Idk if that's actually a bad thing, but for me it was good! The check was around $180 after tip for two people, four dishes and two cocktails each. We didn't have to wait very long in between drinks and our food arrived very fast. I'm not going to try to lie - I'm a lush. We ordered three cocktails each, along with two appetizers. Each drink having its own signature glass with a little added flare. I didn't take pictures because I really think that when ordering these drinks, it should remain a surprise as to what you're going to get. That's half of the fun. Not only do they have the presentation right, but the drinks are crafted PERFECTLY! Each drink made with care and very delicious. I'm lucky enough to travel a fair amount, and Tales & Spirits is hands down one of my favorite bars in the entire world. The cocktails are always out of this world, and the bartenders and servers are all super knowledgable and personable. The menu itself is a work of art - it's really clever and snarky and entertaining to read through; make sure you check out the house rules! It can definitely be a bit daunting as they have a really huge cocktail selection, but the staff can always help guide you in the right direction. The drinks are all presented beautifully, with a little backstory behind each one. And be careful, because they are STRONG! Another nice little touch is that they give you a free bottle of water with each cocktail, which makes me feel a little more like a responsible adult. It's a book where the drinks are from various movies and books. We did the what if combo, which is $50 for 2 people for 2 what if drinks and a platter of bar snacks. All of the food was great! I was ready to be entranced but expected to be disappointed because of the hype. Well, I am happy to say that the hype is well-deserved. It went beyond the drinks and their presentation which were very theatrical...it was the excellent and friendly service from the start when we were waiting in line in the rain. The manager/owner (there were two guys who could have seemed to be in charge) came out to let everyone know how long the wait would be and was very friendly about it. Usually you expect a not-so-friendly person saying something that tries to convey "we don't need your business" at these type of places. They really had the whole vibe down in the decor too. They were certainly going for a look that immediately says "Harry Potter" to me but they were probably going for more of a Treasure Island vibe or something. Either way, it worked and was really quite beautiful. The drinks themselves were very interesting in an innovative way. The Professor was tarter than I expected but smooth and refreshing. I expected more of a tea flavor but the bitters muted that flavor. My Boo seemed to order the drinks that were more elaborate in their presentation like the Gobbelfunk and the Drop of Art. The Gobbelfunk came in a wood "treasure box" with magic gold beans (do not eat!) while the Drop of Art came on a paint pallet with small puddles of "paint" (raspberry coulis, and two other "paints" which were other flavors and colors). You could either drink the drink straight (which was delicious alone) or you could add the different flavors with the accompanying paint brush to make a different flavor. Just really creative and fun! The Lucky Luchador rounded out my night...always a good night when you end with tequila. This place takes all cards. As with most things in Amsterdam, take public transportation, walk, or bike here as parking would undoubtedly be a pain. read more

True mixologists, capable (even enthusiastic!) of designing a drink to your liking. The drink menu offers something for everyone but if you have any slight whim, these people will take care of you. The servers there a friendly, genuine and never forget a face. Only adding to this great drink experience is the food! The food is fantastic - creative, well prepared, never incorrect and quick! The food is simply not tasteful and things that are supposed to be warm are all cold or lukecold. Even after mentioning this, they replaced several dishes for - again - lukecold dishes. Beware of their linguistines or shrimps, they still taste like the sea and again, are not warm enough. I would go back for drinks and probably try the snacks on their cocktail menu. Excellent small plates, great cocktails, trendy bar Amsterdam We went for drinks but as soon as we saw the menu we canceled our res at the other restaurant and ate there at Tales. I'm as quick as anyone to turn hostile on a hipsterish place but Tales sucked me in. Don't be put off by those who say it's overly expensive. They have some inexpensive options available. Plates are indeed smallish but very well prepared food. Tip: Have a few of those divine plates and then have an order of bitterballen to sort of fill yourself up the rest of the way. Drinks wise they have house specials at €8.50 and then an exotic assortment of more expensive and fancy concoctions. Not sure why everyone thinks these are so expensive. Hell you can get drinks that expensive in Darmstadt. Also, they have a basic wine by the glass menu with some glasses as cheap as €3.50. I think that's more than reasonable.
