So when you see that gravel alleyway that looks the the driveway of a mobile home, that's where you need to turn in. Inside is a big open area with a square-shaped bar in the center. The walls are covered in hundreds of photos of the bar's loyal patrons. The bartender lamented to me about how the bar business is really hurting in Chillicothe because so many of the town's young people have been moving away. "We have really low overhead, though, so we'll be fine," she added. She's probably right. Most of the other bars in town have either recently closed or changed hands. But the Traphouse has been going strong for years. A big part of that is that of those that have survived, it's the most "real".

We had been given directions to OK Tavern at a gas station, but even with the directions and a rudimentary map of the town we had a very hard time finding this bar. This is in part because some streets are poorly marked, but more because very few east-west roads in town cross the railroad tracks. Most dead end, and some of those that don't dead-end have permanent barricades up blocking through access. We nearly gave up until I spotted the neon from 3 blocks away and used it as a beacon. :) The best bet for getting here is to take MO-5 south to Gracia Ave, Turn right and go over the bridge, turn right again at Santa Fe (the main road through downtown), then right again in one block at Howell.

When Sherry learned that my cell was not keeping a charge on my motorcycle without a word, she grabbed it and put it on a charger behind the bar. After two cold beers and one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever eaten, I left with directions from not only Sherry but some of the very kind and helpful local folks. And a nearly fully charged phone. And by the way, I can judge a cheeseburger. Iowa Beef Association selected the Cider House in Fairfield, Ia as Best Hamburger in Iowa. The burger I had at Sherry's was every bit as good. With the first bite, I was hunched over the basket while I was searching madly for a napkin to mop up the juice on my face.
