So we had a look in Loebethal and a few other little towns around but just couldn't find anything that looked appealing. Well, luckily we decided to drive the extra 17km to Birdwood because Pomegranate Cottage is a truly lovely place! They have a very cute outside garden, with a fountain and surrounded by lots of trees and flowers so on a sunny day it's probably the best place you can find in Birdwood for lunch. (Mind you the choice isn't that big either) Great setting, friendly service and a good selection of food, ranging from pies to salads, fish to meat and some sandwiches. I had the beef pie for $14, which came with a small salad (no dressing though) and fries. You could tell the pie was homemade and not coming from a freezer. Very tasty and in terms of size I think the dishes are alright for the prices they charge. One thing that bothered me very much though is that the waitress came clearing the plates of the 3 people that were with me while I was still eating. That's an absolute no-go and would be a reason for me not to go back. However, the food was very good so I still recommend the place.

Okay, it wasn't to the extent that one would see in a craft beer bar, but they still have some pretty good beers available that didn't comprise of the usual suspects (of the faux craft beers, as I like to call them). The pub really did have quite a lot of charm, and it certainly fit the location, even though it isn't a huge touristy place. Oh, and they had a pretty decent beer garden as well. Definitely worth checking out.

I wish I could give half stars, because this would get 4.5…read more I visited for lunch with a friend in the middle of the week, so the pub--and the town!--were nearly deserted. It's a lovely little pub, and has a lot of its old, original fixtures, and happily, nice, clean, new bathrooms. There's a good selection of drinks, from a variety of ciders, which my friend exulted over, to the range of beers, spirits and soft drinks. The food is the big surprise here. The pub isn't trying to be a pretentious place, it's exactly what you see is what you get, which is to say, clean, friendly and value for money. So we were both amazed at the size of our meals, as the entree sized wedges with sour cream and chilli were closer to what I thought a main size would be, and our mains were HUGE. The food was fresh, well-cooked, and simply presented, but really, what more do you want? The owner is very friendly and happy to chat, and overall, this was a really nice way to spend a few hours catching up with a friend over good food and drinks.

That doesn't mean that they are bad though. Mind you, this place isn't open all that often, though it is open during the Christmas Lights, which makes it a pretty good place to have some dinner if you happen to be visiting Lobethal for the lights. Yeah, it's pretty impressive actually.

Oh Bierhaus. How I love you…read more As an Adelaide Hills resident, this is where I direct and sometimes take beer lovers who are visiting the hills. What's better on a hot summer day than escaping the sweltering city, venturing up to the cooler climate of the hills and getting a paddle at Bierhaus? Nothing, that's what. Bierhaus have it all going on; Great beer, welcoming staff and owner, the brewing setup on display and great food. If you can score a table outside in summer, it doesn't get much better. A group of friends, a paddle of beer each, some chips and buffalo wings and good times. More beers, and then hopefully someone hasn't drank and can drive you home, or if you're smart you get a group and do an Adelaide hills beer tour which includes prancing pony and grumpys. I'll do one later and review it. In winter, chocolate oatmeal stout is the ultimate. I drink it at Stirling and Crafers pubs, buy it from belair... But on tap at Lobey is the best. Also, get a growler to drink at home and bring back for a refill any time and you've got the whole system gamed my friend. Beer on.
