It's on the beach, and every room has an ocean view. That's a good start because the water here is beautiful. The casual dining restaurant is outdoors and good. A canopy protects all diners from the elements, and the ocean view is extraordinary. The servers get it. They are friendly and attentive, but not in a mandatory, regimented way. I had Eggs Benedict today, and it was good. My photo tells the tale of Benedict. PS, YELp community gestapo, it's my original photos in the event some wannabe try's to suggest otherwise. My room is beach nice, although the person in the next room was unusually loud late last night - as late as midnight. The front desk staff seemed to be all business, and while that's okay, adding a dash of charm might not hurt - ouch. Brenda, who manages the beach, is great, and she gave me solid advice about where to snorkel and the rip currents.

The pool area is the ashtray for the bar.

The hotel itself is a little dated. My room has a remodeled bathroom and kitchenette. The furniture has some stains on the cushions. Other than that the room is clean. The room has a nice patio facing the ocean. One huge drawback is the pool. It is a nice pool overlooking the sea. However the restaurant is at one end. This place is popular with the locals and the locals like to smoke. They can't smoke at the bar so they use the pool area as their smoking lounge. I took a swim this afternoon and the sat in a lounge chair to read. I was enjoying the ocean breeze until three people from the bar dragged plastic chairs to the end of the pool, up wind from me and started to smoke. Two more joined them and there was another few closer to the bar. They also had no problem throwing their buts into the water when they were done with each cigarette. Instead of nice seaside breeze, I got second hand smoke. So if you like swimming at an outdoor ashtray, this is the place for you. Sad because they seem to be trying at the hotel. Update at the end of the week: I spoke to the desk person and assistant manager about the cigarette butts at the pool. They acted quite concerned and ask that I e mail the assistant manager and manager the photos I showed them. The butts were never cleaned up, it just got worse. The pool is pretty much taken over by the restaurant and bar and smokers. You can't even get to the pool without weaving your way through the tables that are blocking the entrance to the pool.

View from one of the downstairs rooms - all rooms are ocean front but the ones on the bottom floor have a wall out. Highly recommend!

If you're active - this is a great beach front resort ( and even if you like to just sit at the pool or relax on your beach front porch). A one minute walk from your home you can get Free kayaks to take out to a small private island about 15 minutes there and back - good snorkeling right outside your door, volleyball court and a beach with chair/ coverings. The pool is perfect for laps or to stand and chat type thing. Would recommend getting some food from seaside market incase Resturant is closed but over all incredible experience. Laid back, private and quiet. Would recommend exploring christensted and surrounding beaches if you have a car but you'll be happy to just stay here too. Bring water shoes for the ocean - it's got some harder rocks/ urchins and let's you get out quicker. You can't beat the views from the rooms ( they're all ocean front).

This is a great place to stay. Big clean rooms with ocean views. Has good restaurants on the property. We were here after hurricane Irma . Peaceful and quiet.

We also snorkeled right in front of their beach at their reef and it had very good snorkeling for the area, even according to locals.

Pretty nice place overall…read more The people in 103 have hoarded a bunch of what look like the communal chairs on the part of the shared beach that's near their balcony (under several other balconies), and they might make a big stink if you sit in them, so watch out for that (maybe you can help them move the shared chairs to a part of the shared beach where it won't bother them).

Two grocery stores within walking distance made this easy, plus you could find the local McDonalds, Subway and Leo's Chicken for the inexpensive getaway fast-meal, popular when traveling with children. Daily rental car was inexpensive and they pick up and drop off! This gave us unlimited access to explore the island, shop Christiansted and take in some of the great dining in town. Driving is fun and easy despite being on the opposite side of the road. We really enjoyed and appreciated the on-property experience relaxing by the pool or on the beach as well as quiet times on the unit's private deck. I particularly recommend driving about the island taking at least one full day to stop and explore the remote beaches to the east, rainforest hills to the west and ending the day with dinner at Cain Bay's Eat! Great food selection and a view that can't be beat. Next trip will include scuba diving! Beginners are welcome so non-certified divers can take a 1/2 day class and a reef trip with an instructor.

We decided to splurge a bit but felt that the pictures online look nothing like the actual rooms…read more The common spaces are beautifully decorated, but the sleeping rooms are very old, small, musty, covered in bugs, and loud. While some bugs are to be expected, there were bugs in the fridge, on light fixtures, and crawling around the floor. Most importantly, we found it very hard to get a good nights sleep due to all of the noise. The fire alarm went off two mornings in a row, multiple times per day. One was at 5:30 am. One was at 7:30am. Way too early for vacation! Staff said there was nothing they could do about it but made it sound like this does happen regularly due to a sensitive fire system and guests that smoke, kitchen cooking, etc. We also were in a hallway with a door and it was slamming open and shut all night with traffic. As far as the onsite restaurants, I would recommend the HH at the speakeasy Breakers Roar Tiki Bar (6-8). The coffee shop Virgin Islands Coffee Roasters was overpriced and only average. The Mexican restaurant El Leon had good drinks, and was ok for breakfast but they really had a hard time with food allergies/modifications. Good location on the boardwalk, we had to drive around to find street parking a couple times and construction closes the roads nearby frequently, but it's nice to walk. Expect many restaurants and shops nearby to be closed if it's a weekday, or no cruise ship around, etc.

Sugar Beach Condos - Welcome to the Sugar Beach Condo Resort

GREAT ACCOMMODATIONS…read more Renting a condo in St. Croix was the best idea since it's like living in a home while you're on vacation. The Sugar Beach Condos are located just 5 minutes north of Christiansted, but about 25 minutes from the airport. Luckily a driver from the Olympic Rental picked us up at the airport. The check in at the condos was quick, and we were in our unit within minutes. It was a comfortable one bedroom with kitchen, laundry facilities, and a nice veranda overlooking Buck Island, Gallows Bay and Christiansted. The location is great, even though there were tenement apartments about half a mile away. But the condo was positioned so that you always get the trade winds. In our 9 days we used the AC only one day, did two loads of laundry, and two loads in the dishwasher. The king size bed was comfortable, and the sleeper sofa was convenient for guests. There was a pool and club house, but we never used it. The beach is just outside the veranda, and some units have direct access to the water. Parking is convenient and the grounds were well kept. My only qualm is living with furniture that's dated and a very small and dark bathroom. I would definitely return and perhaps try another unit, maybe a studio at half the cost for the 1 bedroom.

Our condo held 6 people, two in the master bedroom, and four in the extra room (with a pullout bed). Both rooms were welcoming and nicely decorated. We had two bathrooms in out our condo, the master bathroom had two sinks, a large jacuzzi, shower and a toilet. The other bathroom had everything but the tub. We had enough TP for a few days, and then needed to go out and buy more. We also ran out of soap and lotion, so we ended up buying a bottle at the store. No cleaning service came, so we had to fend for ourselves, which meant we also had to wash and dry the towels they gave us. The kitchen was spacious, a large full sized island, coffeemaker, dishwasher, and refrigerator, just excellent! The owners provided us with all the needed utensils (forks, knives, spoons, plates, etc). We ate at home for most of our meals. Each room is secured with a numeric padlock and a screen. Our back patio had an excellent view of the beach. The beach and pool accommodations were outstanding! White sand beaches, hammocks, lounge chairs, and kayaks (if they came in your rental). A historic sugar mill leans over the beautiful pool, the pool was very large, but had no hot tub. Tennis courts were available on the outskirts of the property, but as of March 2019 were not in service and very rundown. The security staff, although small, was nice and friendly. A great place to stay for a family of 2-6, wonderful! Thanks Leslie!

It is a secluded place on the eastern shore with an outdoor restaurant complete with a fantastic rocky ocean view. I ordered the chicken quesadilla that came with ooey-gooey cheese, peppers and onions and a good share of chicken. Two sides, salsa and sour cream accompanied the entree. It was good. My companions had a shrimp pecan salad, a chicken croissant sandwich and crab Rangoon with garlic fries. The fries, loaded with minced garlic and sprinkled with parsley, were a hit! Our server was pleasant and efficient. The resort itself includes a beautiful ocean-sized pool and outdoor bar. The hotel rooms seemed to be occupied, but unfortunately, most of the cottages destroyed in the hurricanes are uninhabitable.

The positives: The resort is peaceful, the food is excellent, and the rooms are clean, renovated, and comfortable. While there aren't beach chairs because there isn't necessarily a traditional sandy beach, the pool sits so close to the ocean that we didn't miss the sand at all. Hearing the waves while lounging by the pool was more than enough. The negatives: Shower water was lukewarm at times, and housekeeping service is only provided every three days, which may matter for longer stays. Who this place is perfect for: If you're looking for a long weekend where you relax by the water, read a book, and eat and drink without leaving the resort, this is absolutely the place for you. If you're more into exploring and adventuring around the island, renting a car is recommended. Helpful tips: * VI Hail is the local rideshare app (similar to Uber). * There are two dining areas on site. * Breakfast is served by the pool starting at 7am. * Lunch is served poolside starting at 11am. * Happy hour runs from 3-5pm at the main-level hotel bar. * The poolside restaurant turns into a Japanese-inspired steakhouse at 5pm--highly recommend. It also features live music. * For casual meals (pizza, salads, handhelds), visit the main-level bar and courtyard. * Bottled water is $1. * Book directly through the hotel's website to receive breakfast vouchers for your stay. Our stay: We stayed Wednesday through Sunday and didn't have to leave the resort once. There are hiking trails close to the hotel, and a 20-minute walk due east will take you to Jack Bay, a popular snorkeling spot. Final thoughts: Grapetree Bay Resort is no-frills--don't expect a chic or lively scene--but if your idea of a perfect vacation is sunshine, a pool steps from the ocean, great food, and the sound of waves crashing, this place is absolutely worth booking. We will be back!
