LOVED THIS! The tide pools are a once in a lifetime experience and pictures really don't do it justice. Our tour guide, Kendall, was AMAZING! He is very knowledgeable about the area and was an absolute expert navigating the terrain of the rain forest and mountain. It's a really fun ride when you have a driver/tour guide that you trust! Kendall was fantastic - highly recommend requesting him! The waves around the rocks surrounding the tide pools were very intense and I had zero fear because Kendall really knew what he was doing! You have to do a little bit of rock climbing to get to the pools but Kendall gave us step-by-step instructions and it was a blast. (I am not a rock climber!) I wish I brought a waterproof phone case to bring my phone to the actual tide pools. It was breathtaking and so fun to swim in! read more

This is our first trip to the island. We wanted to do a tour and signed up for an all day tour with Tan tan Jeep tours. Tan Tan Tours is a definite no for us! It maybe be ok for you. Please see the attached pictures and read the facts of our experience and decide what would be best for you and yours. Attached are pictures of the facility and their equipment including the two working Jeeps on this day. By lunch time they only had one working Jeep. We left out in "The Green Machine " just after 9 am. We made a stop at the gas station for fuel. We made our way out to Udall Point and then on our way the west side of the island at about 11:15 an while on the main road, not off road, we saw the the rear right wheel and axle pass in front of us. It flew ahead of us and luckily slammed into a tree on the roadside and not into on coming traffic. Our driver was able to get the Jeep off the road just a few feet from a telephone pole. A few more feet we would have slammed head on into the pole. If not for a Good Samaritan who stopped to check on us we would have been stuck on the side of the road for more than 2 hours. A tow truck showed up fairly quickly and hauled off "The Green Machine." The Good samaritan took us and the driver a couple more miles up the road to the chicken shack where we waited until after 2:00 pm for the one other working Jeep to come pick us up. We did have a good lunch at the Chicken Shack. The lady who took our money and another gentleman showed up in the other Jeep. Our driver loaded us up on this Jeep and we returned to the office. I had to hold the door shut on the way back. Upon the return to the Tan Tan office we were offered the option to complete the trip this day or schedule a half day tour another day. Being that we were more than 2 and half hours behind schedule and had dinner reservations we were not able to continue this day. We were not able to reschedule for another half day tour during the remainder of our trip. We asked for a full refund form the lady who took our cash and she informed us she could not refund our money. We asked to speak to the owner. She informed us the owner was not on the islands but was able to get him on the phone. We advised him we wanted a full refund due to the unfulfilled tour and being put in an unreasonable dangerous situation due to the faulty vehicle. Take a look at the picture and make a call for your own safety. The owner refused to refund our money. He offered half a refund or a half day tour another day. We advised neither option would work for us. We simply wanted a refund. He flat out said he would not refund our money & we informed him we would make a factual post of our experience on social media with Tan Tan, with pictures and seek legal assistance to recoup our money. We offered to accept a refund and take no further action and part on good terms. The owner refused to refund our money and told us to do what we needed to. So here we are. My wife and I signed up for a half-day morning tour. The views from Mount blue were spectacular as was the drive to the tide pools. The drive was more exciting than any ride I've been on at Disneyland. The beer drinking pigs were also unique and to get a glimpse, you can watch the video they posted on Facebook. Both Kendall and Kevin gave excellent recommendations for dining on the island and they were spot on. I would highly recommend TanTan tours in the future for exploring and enjoying Saint Croix. read more

I'm giving a 5 star for Kareem, our driver. -- I had called Wave a couple weeks prior to our trip but apparently he forgot about us so he had to call Kareem in to drive us. We had to wait about an hour but it's Cruzan time so no worries. And poor Kareem was doing his laundry but got there as quickly as he could. I think we got a "modified" tour because of the late start because we were expecting a couple of swimming stops but only had one at the tide pools. Regardless, in five hours we had pretty much covered the island and even made a special stop at a jewelry store Wave recommended for off brand Sonya bracelets. (we didn't buy any). The tour covered the island from end to end including a historic site of a sugar mill, the tide pools and several vista points. Lots of off-roading and Kareem was a superb driver. It was really fun. Wave did give us a bit of a discount since we had to wait but be sure to clarify how long the tour is and what it covers if you have any doubts. We had a private tour with 2 of us, and they charge you for the whole jeep or in other words for a third person. I've read reviews that you have to hope for more people to fill a jeep but you can pay extra for a private tour. I highly recommend this jeep tour and you can choose from a 1/2 or full day excursion. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of riding with an incredible driver, Manny, a local Crucian who shared his wonderful knowledge of the island combined with a great sense of humor. This is a perfect way to see the island and explore places you would never dare take your personal vehicle!!!! We had 3 jeeps in the group and we were a combination of tourists and repeat customers.....planning my next ride as I write. And, for Manny....."I did not Die!!!!!!" Kareem was knowledgeable, courteous and also very attentive to the group while on the trail. We ventured to the highest point of the island and while there he explained the entire history of St Croix. Which was quite amazing to have the land laid out and a detailed history right in front of you. He also was very careful on the trail and gave us a chance to visit the furthest side of the island near the tide pool. I would recommend Tan Tan and Kareem to anyone willing to explore the rural regions of the island and get a good history of what the island has to offer. read more

Adventure, Education, Excitement... Day 1 of our first visit to St. Croix and we thought a full day Jeep tour would be nice. We were wrong - it was so much better than "nice"! Our driver, Moses, was friendly and knew more about the island's trees and plants than we could have hoped for. Strategic stops to look and touch the trees and plants (some as a warning about thorns or acidic oils!) was a thrill for us. We even got to taste native almonds and picked up some almost ripe fruits to take back to the hotel. All of the above you can do in your own rental car. Then the adventure began!!! We went off, off road. Moses took us off the rugged Scenic Drive and did a phenomenal job navigating the intense 4-wheel paths leading up, down, sideways and a few times backwards to the idilc tidal pools where we stopped to a short climb over the rocks to swim in the pools. So much fun! Bonus - you get to take the same (only) route back towards the relatively modern dirt roads. But wait - there was more! Our tour, east to west, north to south, covered beaches, mountains, rain forests, old sugar mill ruins, mountain top vistas to view entire ends of the island and towns with wonderful stops along the way. We snapped over 300 pics, met some great folks, watch a pig drink a beer (non alcoholic) and made a new friend who truly loves his home island. If you do nothing else on St. Croix, take this tour! read more

I've lived on St. Croix for over 30 years. I wanted to take friends to the Tide pools. Well Tan Tan tours offered that and so much more! From the owner Wave who is so hospitable and Kevin, our guide/driver, the experience was wonderful. I learned some new things about my island. Kevin was so knowledgeable and personable. His ability to manage The "road" to Bodkins mill and Annaly Bay was like going down a country path though the road is crater filled and narrow. He even has names for the challenges of the road making us feel safe. His knowledge of the island was extensive both historically and currently. He literally took one of my friends by the hand to guide her to the pools! We couldn't have asked for a more safety conscious and considerate guide. All in all I would highly recommend Tan Tan tours if you are ever on St. Croix! read more

We did the half day AM tour. They met us at the Christensted pier at 0900. Our driver, Brian, was friendly and local. The tour started out through the projects, then quickly left the city and went into the hills. We stopped at some remarkable vista points while Brian explained some of the local points of interest far below (old sugar mills, the soon-to-close refinery, the college, etc.). Our next stop was an old windmill from 1808 and again, Brian explained the brutal history of sugar refining and rum making in general. Our next stop was the Cane Bay beach, famous for its scene at the end of Shawshank Redemtion. Then it was down to the tide pools and about 20 minutes in the pools. On the way back, we stopped in at a little bar famous for its beer drinking pigs and mamawanna home brew rum drink. The pigs were hilarious, and the rum drinks very strong. We were back on the pier by 1 PM to enjoy the rest of our day. I recommend this tour highly, and our only regret was we left it to the middle of our time on the island-- it should be one of the first things you do. We paid $100 per person, which is a little expensive sure, but you do get a good value. Bring your camera, and a good pair of water shoes for the tide pools. Flip flops won't cut it. Also, be sure to make reservations because if the is a cruise ship in port when you want to go, booking might be tough. Get your spot at least a day or two in advance. read more

Highly recommend doing this tour early on in your vacation. We spent the full day doing the island tour, although it was just us and another couple. We went to Point Udall, however, because my small humans did not weigh very much, we did not climb up the backside of the hill before the point. Which was fine by me and by the other couple. The first half of the tour is pretty tame (aside from the missing hill climb, which is supposed to be the wildest part), with a stop at Point Udall and then a drive through town and a stop to order lunch. You also get to go to a lookout point and see the entire island, an old building, and more climbs/descents. The 2nd half is nothing but crazy bumps and mud! And the tide pools! They are fantastic. Make sure to listen to your tour guide as they know the tides the best. We were *almost* too late when leaving the tide pools and the guide had to hand carry out the small ones. As we were leaving, a group of soloists were trying to make it to the tide pools and the tour guides advised them that it was too dangerous. During the full day, you get several swimming stops at different beaches along the entire length of the island. We paid cash and received a discount, which was unexpected. Although we had reservations a week in advance, we unknowingly went on a cruise ship day and the tours were already booked for half day rentals. Remember that it is island time, so when they say to be on the pier at 0900, don't get nervous if they don't show up until 0915. I had to keep telling myself "island time; island time" during our vacation. After a week, it was kind of nice to not be in a rush everywhere. The only negative aspect of the trip was that our guide was telling us about how his birthday was the next day and that he usually doesn't get large tips. It almost felt like he was trying to guilt me into giving him a bigger tip. Lucky for him, I only had $20s so he received a decent tip, more than what I thought he deserved. Happy birthday to him. He was still a wonderful guide and no doubt we'll do another tour, as soon as we all weigh enough to enjoy the full gambit. read more

Just got back from St. Croix. We did the tan tan tour on our last full day there. The tour was amazing and the guide was even better. His name was Kendall. He was funny and also gave a serious and educational speech on the sugar mill. The Tan Tan tour is A MUST. We paid $120 plus tip for a half day tour. I was affraid it wouldn't be worth it, but I was wrong. Well worth it. I wish my group could have chilled out alittle longer with the beer drinking pigs in the rainforest but we were pressed for time and had to get back to pack. I booked directly through Kendall a little more than a week in advance - a recommended driver from my sister in law. He took our credit card to hold the reservation and told us to be on site at 850am because they will leave if people are late. We arrived at 835am with our two children and waited...and waited...several times we confirmed with the local vendor we were in the right spot and she assured us that we were and "they always run late, usually after 9am". By 915am we finally were able to connect live with someone who let us know they decided to take a group of 20 Danish tourists and bump us with no advance notice. When my husband inquired if they ever planned to call/text/alert us we had been cancelled he was told by the Tan Tan employee to "just relax man it's vacation". They literally abandoned us and failed to see any issue with their lack of communication. Needless to say, we will not be recommending this service to people who plan a vacation on island. To add to this, we won a gift certificate that night for Tan Tan at the hermit crab races and promptly returned it letting the race manager understand this was not a reliable service to promote. We were excited to try this having come to STX for years and looking for a new family friendly activity to add to our vacation. Disappointing to say the least. read more

Do not leave St Croix without doing this tour! The more friends you take the more fun you will have. The Full Moon tour was one of the best nights I spent in the islands in many years. This is a way to see places that most people never experience. And if you are planning a bachelor or bachelorette party they can take all of you on a roving party and all you have to worry about is having fun! read more
