Love the people here. Friendly, knowledgeable, helpful when you need them. Good selection of product in a wide range. I wish the Tandy product would have a little more information on them. For instance, medium rivet. I don't know the depth. Sometimes it's useful to bring in a scrap piece of what you're working with. Sometimes a bit high in price, but then again, I don't have to pay shipping and wait. As mentioned, you can save with becoming a member, and they will help you out to decide if it's worth it for you. It may not be as a hobby. But if you are going to do enough to sell items on Esty or Faire's then it will more than likely be worth it. read more

Tandy Leather is amazing! I wasn't sure if it would be worth driving out here, but I was 20 minutes away for work one day and thought I'd check it out since I'd been admiring things online for ages. So so glad I came in! I'm new to leatherworking, and even having read project instructions and blogs, I wasn't sure what I needed or what to do with the tools and dyes. I browsed for a while and when I was ready to check out, Cass (sorry if I'm spelling it wrong!) asked what I was making and helped me weed out unnecessary tools and replaced them with what I really needed. She also took a lot of time walking around explaining what I'd need to dye leather and finish it, what kinds of coatings to use, and gave me a demo of using the strap cutter, dye, top coat, wax coat, gum tragacanth and edge slicker, as well as both edge bevelers I was purchasing. So so useful! She explained why eyelets won't work in belt holes (buckle pins need an oblong hole or they'll get stuck), and was generally really easygoing, full of great tips, and she gave me the leather sample piece so I could remember what to do. Also, she pointed me to their classes which are free if you get a $35 per year membership, totally worth it for four classes of instruction on carving, tooling, dyeing, etc. I have to make time to come back for that! There was a huge selection of tools in an organized and uncluttered store in a mill building with tons of parking. Tremendous customer service. Prices are very good for the accessories - not sure how the leather prices compare. But for dye, conditioner, etc. their prices are about 2/3 of Amazon or less. And the advice I got from the staff was priceless. Worth the 45 minute (one way) trip for me. read more

I just read the review shared by Karen S. in Newton and I heartily agree with her write up. I feel that chain stores often lack staff with relevant product knowledge, experience and customer service skills. This is a rare exception. I've been to Tandy in Chelmsford on several occasions, and have been assisted by Cass. When I speak with her, I get useful information and her full, patient attention. Rob (Store Manager) is a great resource as well. Both of them are class instructors who have logged many hours on their own intricate projects (some of which are displayed). The store itself is neat, airy and full of varied and interesting hides, tools and supplies. The staff are a great sounding board for ideas. You feel welcomed when you arrive. That said, the staff will leave you to shop if you prefer. The classes are helpful and I learned as much by doing as by seeing other people's work. $35 for a year membership and 4 free classes, let's see you get that at a continuing ed program! This company is a good stop for new-ish leather people. I've really enjoyed it. That said, this company sells mostly moderate quality products but far better quality than a hobby shop. The best value of the place is that everything is in one location and that the people there all seem to know what they're doing to a decent degree and refer you to other employees when the question is out of their experience. Overall, this place is great for starters and hobby users but immensely better if you have an ein and can justify the business account. As another user specified, the club pricing is pretty lame. It makes you feel ripped off unless you spend a lot of money there and can justify the gold membership or own a business and can have a business account. My first purchase as a business account went from 263 down to 170 with the creation of a business account. That's pretty crazy... and If I didn't own a business I would not have bought anything. However, this margin pays for the employees who are, most certainly, the most valuable part of the shop. read more

I have shopped Tandy for 20 years. The last time I was in the Chelmsford store was two years ago. Today, I decided it was time for another visit to pick up some rivets and to see what is on sale. Their prices are still high. No surprise there. They have a buying club you can buy into and save. I hate when businesses do that. I think everyone should get their best price. There should not be ridiculously inflated prices for those who do not sign up! To give you an example, a utility knife costs $12. Elite members pay $6. Home Depot sells the same little red angled utility knife for $3 in the flooring section. I know that I am not getting the best price. Hate that! Tool quality is another issue. I have broken their hole punch, awl, and a couple stamps in recent memory. I buy Osborne tools on line when I can. They are superior. Leather is also unpredictable. I look through stacks and still sometimes I can't find a nice piece. A lot of the time, there is a good percentage of a hide that is damaged, but you have to pay for it all, if you want the piece. I buy what I need there, and that's it. They are pricing their way out of my business. I have since been to the Rhode Island store. I'm on the mailing list and watch the sales. read more

Tandy leather has always been great to me. I am a USMC Veteran also. Their business and military discounts are great. Jamie is always excellent knows where everything is and is always there to help. Not one bad experience. Also just want to mention a lot of people say they are expensive they are not. They have. Clubs to join for discounts just like any other business. Also for some people that say businesses get a cheaper price because we resale items and businesses just like any other business will give wholesale prices.
