We tried Tangled for the first time after reading all the great the reviews and found it to be a quaint hidden gem with great ambiance and big city food in small town Minnesota ! The seafood boil was the special of the night and it was worth it! It was very flavorful with large shrimp, mussels, andouille sausage, corn on the cob and scallops. We also tried the beef Wellington which was cooked to perfection, and the amazing bananas foster served ala flambé at our table for dessert ! With the wonderful proprietor, great service and amazing chef rounding out our experience we will definitely be back to try more dishes from the menu ! read more

Wow! This is a MUST TRY!! Everything on the menu sounds amazing. We had the beef Wellington and evening special of jambalaya. Both were extremely flavorful. The steak was tender and the flaky crust was baked just right on the Wellington. We also had the daily soup and a salad. Both were exceptional. The true winner of the show was the bananas foster which was scratch made and put together right at our table with the wait staff and chef. They fambroughed it at our table before serving. The ambiance is intimate, eclectic, and quaint with only a few tables. Service was great giving us time in between courses. They are only open Fri and Sat so reservations are a MUST. We had to wait a week to get in. It's nice to see such a high quality restaurant in our rural area of MN/NW Wisconsin. It was our first time there but will not be our last!! read more

I'm a little conflicted not rating Tangled Up In Blue a little higher, as I'm sure this is a local gem and I can tell the chef is kind and passionate, but the service was very disappointing and a few of the dishes didn't meet our expectations. Read on for deets if ya want! Three of us arrived at around 6pm, but we were turned away and told to come back in an hour because we didn't have a reservation and she anticipated it would be too busy. There was no one else in the place except for two tables. But we obliged even though we were starving already. When we returned, the place was still empty except for 2 tables, ugh. Not a good start. We ordered the lobster bisque, seafood broil, and beef wellington. The lobster bisque was neither lobster-y or bisque-y, lacking creaminess or white wine or sherry. We asked for a little bread to dip into the seafood broil, but instead were brought (and bought) a "bread platter" with pita, dips and veggies. But the seafood broil itself was amazing, swimming in butter, and the mussels and shrimp were especially plump and tender. The beef wellington was impressive in that it was tender and cooked perfectly, but the amount of duxelles was scant, just a little dollop on top. The chef came out a few times, even hand-delivering plates, which I thought was really cool. We enjoyed his service but I personally don't think I'd come back here to splurge again. read more

Kathleen was the perfect hostess- friendly, sincerely wanting to make your dinner the best experience! The food- if you eat red meat, you can't go wrong with their beef Wellington. Tender and succulent. I had the stuffed lobster tail ( which was a special) but I think I loved my husband's Wellington more! We had the wrapped scallops that were the perfect bite for appetizers. We went for an anniversary trip with our kids. It is beautiful, eclectic, and intimate. While it's not a family style restaurant, they were wonderful with our kids, giving a them a little toy and offering to make them a special plate of spaghetti. Fantastic every time. We have eaten at three Michelin star restaurants. 2 in NYC and one in Lima Peru and in my opinion this little inconspicuous gem gives them a run for their money. So, I read about this place and was DYING to go. I hauled my friend and her kids (10 & 13) here while we were on a trip spouting about how amazing it would be. I wish I would have gotten the opportunity to find out. First things first, I checked out their website to get the deets. Noted the hours of operation, took a look at the menu etc. I saw that they opened at 4:30, so we arrived right at 4:30... to find locked doors. We waited a few more minutes and still locked doors. Finally they opened the doors and we walked in all excited only to be met by a woman who was still setting up the diningroom and informed us that they don't open until 5. I was slightly irritated by this because the website specifically says "check back often as our times do change". Don't you think then that you'd be prompt about making sure the hours on your website are accurate? We were also then informed that their business is a reservation only business. Now again, refer to the website and it says, "reservations are recommended but not required". She also put a menu in my hands, which upon scanning it was NOT the menu that they had posted on the website. The woman asked if the menu looked ok and she said she thought she could squeeze us in around 8pm. Over 3 hours later! Well, since I had starved myself to be able to eat all the amazing food that was bragged about, I was way too hungry to wait that much longer. So we all walked away incredibly disappointed. I really liked this place. I loved the decor, it was cozy and interesting. As far as the food, the star of the show was the bananas foster, it was amazing. They have a good wine list, including lots of local options. The bread they serve is pita, and it was wonderfully soft and delicious. I didn't love the hummus that came with it, though. I also wasn't crazy about the beef carpaccio, but it was at least interesting. I want to go back to try more of the stuff on the menu. We had just stopped for a "snack." This is definitely a must try if you are into delicious food, a quaint setting and hands-on service. I was a little worried at first because I am not a big fan of steak or seafood, but the jambalaya option on the menu was just perfect. My husband got a steak and he was also very satisfied. My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch today before our canoe trip down the St. Croix. I have to admit I was intrigued by the interesting name-- "Tangled Up in Blue" is, of course, a Dylan tune and he's from here-- but anyway, I wasn't sure what sort of restaurant it was from the outside because it looks like the typical old place on the main road through Taylors Falls. In fact, if I hadn't gone inside I would've assumed it was some old mom-and-pop ice cream store or a coffee house. I'm glad I assumed wrong, because this is a unique place and definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. There are certainly other choices for food in the town (Frostop, anyone?) but upon reading the menu placed next the the front door, we decided to go in because their salads sounded great. Upon entering, we were treated to a very eclectic place. The dining room is small and somewhat dark, but the decor is decidedly and uniquely fun! The walls are dark blue and silver, the chairs are painted silver, and there is some very cool sculpture work on the walls and throughout the dining area. The curvy flat wear was presented at a rakish angle to the table. And oh, the tables themselves had silvery glitter dusted here and there. This place says "yes, I'm classy yet casual, and you've made a good choice," but we decided to withhold judgment until after lunch. After all, ambiance is not most of the dining experience; the food is really what counts, at least to us. The waitress, who also served as host, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food, the history of the restaurant and the surrounding town. The chef himself delivered the meals to the couple across from us and talked to them for a couple minutes. I thought that was a nice touch. I had a flat bread mozzarella/basil/artichoke/tomato pizza and the BF had a chicken salad with strawberries and poppyseed dressing. Both were delicious! Neither of us had a complicated lunch, but the food was fresh and made with care. The portion sizes were perfect; not too much or too little. They also appear to have a nice wine list although I stuck with fresh-brewed ice tea. I would've thought this place would be busier in this tourist town on a beautiful late-summer Saturday afternoon, but summer is growing old. I bet they'll be very busy next weekend (Labor Day). The only reason I didn't give Tangle Up in Blue another star is because their lunch menu is extremely limited-- they have a few salads, a couple of soup choices, a few flat bread pizzas, a few entrees, and no appetizers. Not a large selection to choose from for lunch. Their dinner menu had more on it but I was told they don't serve from the dinner menu during lunch hours. Their hours are also somewhat limited. I seem to recall their sign stating they're only open Thursday through Sunday and they only offer lunch on the weekends. So call before you go, but do go, because this is a little jewel of a place located in a jewel of an area. read more

We visited here two years ago for my birthday dinner while staying at a nearby bed and breakfast. We felt as though we were guests at the chef's home, also! The chef and other staff customized any of our requests, created a hot drink for me that wasn't on their menu, and wow was our food amazing. I felt like we had a private chef. First off, what's not to like about a restaurant named after a Bob Dylan song? This is my 3rd time dining at TUIB, and I've been pleasantly surprised each and every time. We stopped for an early 4:00 pm dinner on a gorgeous fall Sunday after hiking nearby Interstate Park and Franconia Sculpture Garden. After enjoying deliciously simple and exquisitely fresh house salads, I had a 16 oz. Black & Bleu steak that was bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. This beast is huge, and I'll be enjoying the leftovers for dinner tonight! My companion had the Spicy Jambalaya with Jumbo Shrimp that would have made ol' Hank Williams proud. When they say Jumbo Shrimp, they're not kidding, and the Andouille sausage was the most authentic I've tasted outside of Louisiana. This dish was also quite large, with plenty of leftovers heading home. A fabulous Bananas Foster made table-side and shared provided a splendid finale to our feast. With its' great service, funky cool blue ambience, and excellent food, TUIB is a rare find outside the greater metropolitan area. We will be back! read more

I really really wanted to love this place. It has a charm all its own, but takes the Blue theme a bit too far - from the sponge painted walls, to the blue table glitter, I defiantly understood what they were going for. The small place has more of a residency feel than a restaurant. It has a cozy fire place, but the décor is a bit rough around the edges and somewhat kitschy. But enough about my stick in the mud outlook on the atmosphere... The serving staff is great and professional and I could tell they take a lot of pride in their restaurant. The food is very good. Wonderful and quaint place. I came here on November 7, 2015 with two of my best friends who were from out of town. We started with the asparagus appetizer that was thoroughly enjoyed. The beef wellington was nothing short of fabulous. My friends also enjoyed theirs as well. One had halibut with crab/cream sauce and the other had walleye. The wine was delicious, too, and our service was lovely. I can't wait to return with my husband! I do agree with another viewer that this gem of a restaurant is $$$ not $$. read more

The food was awful. I ordered the lobster soup and a salad. The salad was passable but the soup was not hot, had very little lobster and was watery. I strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant. In the area for a quiet weekend away from the twin cities, tangled up in blue was recommend by the innkeeper. The decor takes the blue and tangled theme to heart including the glitter on the table. Wine list was respectable with enough options for any of their entree choices. The wife and I both had the featured salad of mixed greens, fresh strawberries and blueberries and a creamy yogurt vinaigrette that was well enough. The wife had the stuffed pork loin topped with a creamy mustard sauce. This she did enjoy enough although the sauce was very reminiscent of a pre-made brand name cooking sauce. My entree unfortunately required feedback to the chef. The salmon puff-pastry was presented well over risotto and daily vegetable. Puff-pastry shell was well cooked with very tender salmon constrained within. The miscue was the sauce. The sauce contained an inedible amount of sodium. I was able to contain most of it and finish a majority of the dish. The staff was very responsive to the feedback offering to make a new order of sauce and risotto, although I declined. The staff advised that the sauce did not contain any additional salt just lobster base and capers which leads me to believe proportions were off in there kitchen. It was also noted that the daily vegetables of cooked baby carrots and asparagus were cold on both entrees. The three stars are a reflection on the locale and selection in the area but would not be acceptable in larger cities. read more

If Dylan knew how bad this place is, he'd make sure they changed the name. And it's not just that the duck was boingy and grisly but the place just has such a tacky vibe to it. Entrees were served by a young kid with a baseball cap turned around. A young girl with an attitude who obviously didn't want to be there was bussing tables. Don't bother looking at the menu online or while you're there because they don't have it. You need a flashlight to see your way to the bathroom. In my opinion this place does not deserve the 4+ stars that others have given it. The only thing I can think of is they must be related. I guarantee this place will not exist unless food quality picks up, attitudes change, and tacky factors are addressed. read more

We stopped in with the family (3 young children) after a ski race and family ski day at nearby Wild Mountain. It was an impromptu visit and there were no problems. I wouldn't call it "kid friendly," as the menu and atmosphere are more adult oriented, but they sure were super attentive to our kids and made the visit easy for all of us.. As a vegetarian I was a little embarrassed to ask for two sides for my meal. All of the entrees were meat or seafood (although the server says the menu changes periodically). The chef personally assured me that he could prepare something vegetarian for me, and he certainly delivered. The risotto and vegetables were perfectly cooked and he added stuffed mushroom caps and stuffed peppers. My boyfriend tried duck for the first time and was pleased.
