I chose tangles bc of positive Yelp reviews, and Wendell came highly recommended. Although he was mostly professional, I think his style is old school. I said I currently had a slight ombré and he said he "doesn't do that" and rolled his eyes, like it was just too trendy for him, or unattractive. My supposed-to-be subtle highlights came out looking chunky and rather orange, and he didn't do anything more than a slight trim, when I asked for a full cut and style. His prices were reasonable, but then again, I had to pay to have my hair revised by another stylist. Update: my name wouldn't be in the books because I don't post under my real name. Even if it were not in downtown Missoula, I'm pretty sure that Tangles would be considered a local treasure. It's very impressive from the outside and even nicer once you get inside and meet the people who work there. The renovation of this former historic gas station into a high-end but no pretenses styling station clearly took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (not to mention chisels and jackhammers). While clients only visit once every few weeks or months, the staff work here all the time, so having a nice space is pretty critical to their own sense of well-being. And if they feel happy, then your hair will be the proud beneficiary. I needed a last-minute haircut on a Monday morning, and Kim quickly accommodated me without hassle. After several months of winter growth, anything resembling an actual style that I once had (which is debatable) was hidden beneath a tangled mess of unkempt hair. The stylist assigned to me, Lori, clipped and combed and adjusted things until my hair slowly began to fit my head shape again. She didn't give me a haircut, exactly. It was more like emergency head therapy. Choosing to have your hair done at a top of the line place like Tangles is like having an accomplished artist or award-winning professional photographer provide the decoration for your walls. Sure, you can do it yourself for less, or find a bargain basement chain where the stylists are poorly paid and operate under a ticking time clock. You don't necessarily need artwork on your walls. They can be white and bare for all I care. But personally I like a splash of color in my life and a little bit of style to my hair (not a lot, but a little). I've seen Wendell twice now, first at the end of last September, then again yesterday. I had went to a different place a few times earlier this year because I had to be very frugal. It's better to wait until you can afford a good cut unless all you need is the most basic of trims. Wendell fixed my hair yesterday and I'm so pleased with the result. Not sure if they do many men's haircuts or styling, but I honestly had the worse haircut in decades. Very uneven, patches uncut, ragged in spots, sideburns very uneven (one is almost gone entirely). Wendell seemed rushed, had me in & out under 30 minutes, so maybe thats the reason or that he doesn't do men's cut's much. Nonetheless, whatever the reason, will never go there again. read more

In December I started calling around to try to find someone to get my hair permed by. The typical response at most salons I called was they didn't have anyone that could do it or particularly enjoyed doing it. I have very long natural red hair with some wave. So it would obviously be time consuming. The last place I used stopped returning my calls to reschedule after multiple calls so I moved on to somewhere that wanted my business. I called Tangles and reception was great and recommend stylist Lori. I then spoke with Lori to give her an idea of my goals. She was pleasant and eager to schedule. I believe I got in within a week if not sooner and it was a late afternoon appointment which was an even bigger plus. Lori did an amazing job. She was patient and didn't rush through. My perm turned out perfect. It looks natural and that was my main goal. I would recommend Lori to anyone looking for this service. Every time I move to a new area, it can take a while to find a gifted hairstylist who knows how to cut my type of hair--it's thick, combination curly, & I like edgy cuts. Not easy to work with, I know. Anyways, I tried several highly rated salons here in Missoula with very disappointing results, before I finally found Kim at Tangles Hair Salon. It's not pleasant walking around with a bad haircut that doesn't flatter ones face or personality, especially when it's been cut like an old ladies style. I'm guessing they see a 50+ woman walk in & think that's what she wants, even when I came in the first time with an edgy cut that only needed a trim. The hairdresser at a highly rated salon wound up ruining that cut by blunting it out & making it look like a ball on top of my head. It was downhill from there with several hairdressers & salons in Missoula. There are no words for how grateful I am to have Kim as my hairdresser now! I get compliments on my hair almost every single time I step out of my home. The highest amount of appreciations for one day was 7 times (I started counting because it just kept happening & I was curious.) Young people say my hair is "savage" & they love it, although the complements are from all age spectrums. All I have to say is Kim, the owner of Tangles, is absolutely the best! She REALLY listens to what you are imagining for your hair, tells you what she can do with your type of hair in connection to the style wanted, ensures you're on board with it before cutting, & makes it happen! I was told to call when I got there but no one answered. Elizabeth eventually opened the door. She was arrogant and condescending & seemed to have no memory of our phone conversation. When I challenged her regarding the color she suggested I ask one of the people from the youtube videos I watched do my hair. Having 2nd thoughts about trusting this person, I put my hair back up on a ponytail holder at which point she took my cape off and told me we're done. Elizabeth had no people shills and shouldn't be in the service industry I left work early for this appointment and I'm really disappointed it didn't get done. After having my head mangled down in Hamilton in July, I was waiting for it to grow out so I could have some remediation done! I saw the predominance of good reviews here on Yelp forTangles, so made an app't with Kim. She was sitting at the front desk when I walked in, and immediately made eye contact and engaged me with questions -- we didn't get around to hair talk until I was in the chair enrobed -- she began combing and swirling my hair, pointing out the various colic's, swirls, natural waves, etc that I have been living with for alifetime, IOW she was managing myexpectations about the unruly breakouts and tufts that were left by the previous barbarian/stylist. Anyway, when it was over (in about 9 minutes!) the sides of my hair were totally cleaned up and balanced with the top; she didn't even touch the top... she just knew what to do. Then, she said that since it was only a half a haircut she would cut the price to 1/2. I moved to Missoula in October and one of the first things I started asking people was where I could get my hair cut. I am very picky about how my hair is cut so I had to get more than one person's opinion. I decided to use the internet and compared ratings and reviews for a few different places. I saw that Tangles had the best ratings and reviews so I gave it a go. It was the best decision I could have made! My hair was down to the middle of my back and I wanted to cut it above my shoulders. Kim did a wonderful job! She sat and talked with me about what she was going to do, talked to me about how much of a shock it was going to be, and if I didn't like something about it after a couple of weeks I could come back in and she would fix it. She also showed me how to style it in a couple of different ways and if I was having trouble with that I could come back in and she would go over it with me as I did it. It was such a load off my mind to find someone who was so knowledgeable and willing to take the time out to talk with me about my hair issues.
