During my recent birthday celebration road trip to Portland, Oregon, I had the distinct pleasure of dining at Tap Tap Cuisine. The culinary experience was truly remarkable, and the customer service was exceptional. The restaurant's location is also highly favorable, contributing to its overall appeal. As a Jamaican who grew up in the Miami neighborhood known as "Little Haiti," I have had ample exposure to Haitian cuisine, particularly griot. My childhood memories include saving my allowance to purchase griot from a Haitian lady's house on Fridays, with the assistance of a neighbor who spoke her language. My first taste of griot occurred when I was 11 years old. I felt compelled to share this background information to establish my credentials in assessing the quality of Haitian cuisine. Tap Tap Cuisine proved to be an exceptional gem in this regard. Plus, my 2 friends who accompanied me are of Haitian background. We all gave it a 10 out of 10! In all areas. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the owner, creating an immediate sense of camaraderie. By the time we departed, we felt like part of the restaurant's extended family. The food is pretty good, similar to other Caribbean island cuisines like Jamaican and puerto Rican, lots of beans & rice, fried plantains and meat. Not the lightest of foods but sometimes you want hearty and filling. We tried the whole fried fish, chicken wings, and plantains w/ griotz (fried pork belly cubes) and the Diri Djon Djon which was like a tasty savory beans & rice. It was also served w/ a side of Pikliz - like a slightly spicy pickled cole slaw which I really liked. The legume was ok but not my favorite - like a mild coconutty curry stew w/ eggplants & cabbage. A bit too mushy consistency. My only complaints is their menu is a little irregular, they don't always have everything so I would call ahead if you were wanting to try a specific dish, particularly the fried fish. Also it was supposed to be snapper but they only had tilapia which was still pretty good but I wish it was snapper. Also it is a bit pricey for some of their entrees but that is just kind of the way restaurants are now. I was visiting from Washington and Im always on the hunt for caribbean food. Usually, I will do Jamaican because Haitian food is not something and I can find. This was so good! We stopped in on a whim and ordered the fried plantains with fried chicken and pickliz, and it blew our minds. The flavors of everything combined in really interesting and complementary ways. We also had the don djan djan which was SO good. Even though we hadn't had it before, it felt like home. :) read more
