If you are new to Cuban food, this is a great place to start. They have a great indoor and outdoor seating area depending on what you're looking for, as well as good authentic meal options. I came on a weekday around 6:30 so there were some people there already but not a lot. You walk up to the counter and place your order. We did have to wait a pretty long time for someone to come to the register - about 4 groups lined up behind us by the time we ordered. However the food came out very quickly so not a bad wait. The food itself was good, however I'm accustomed to punchier flavors and these were a little muted - great for those who may be new to this cuisine. Cuban restaurants can have pretty large plates so i really appreciated that they had a kids plate that even adults can order from if they weren't as hungry. We went there right after some Christmas shopping in the area. Very slow night for them, we were the only ones dining in. Liked the upbeat indoor seating. It's very casual, order at the counter and you get a number. They have area for you to get your own water, silverware and to bus your own table later. 3 of us shared the empanadas, sandwich and bowl. Portions were good and our favorites were the bowl and sandwich. Empanadas were ok. Lemonade was great but my coffee was lukewarm so I had to ask for it to be warmed up. We would come back again. We arrived at Cubo de Cuba right around when it just opened, maybe around 11:30 a.m. The line wasn't long at all. We placed our order and our food didn't take too long to arrive. The restaurant has a relaxed casual vibe, very welcoming. The colors and decor were bright and artsy. I liked that there were choices of seats to either eat indoor or outdoor. All the food we ordered were delicious and satisfying. I was so glad my sister took me there. I was so happy to finally get around to trying Cubo. The food was delicious and definitely gave that comfort food vibe. My wife had a soy Picadillo bowl that tasted sweet but was overall great. I had the ropa vieja plate that was equally full of flavor and delicious. We had a couple of refreshing Cuba Libres, which is essentially just a rum and coke with lime. The service style is order at the counter and get a number. The employees were all kind. The only knock was that while a "plate" is more expensive and advertised as having more food than the "bowl", it certainly didn't appear that way. It seemed as though you get more of a bang for your buck by choosing the bowl option as it includes avocado and 2 sides technically. We also had a couple of beef and cheese empanadas that were tasty. I got the Havana bowl. It was awesome. It's got pork, sauces, caramelized onion, black beans, avocado, two different types of plantains, mango, an orange peel, and I got mine with yellow rice. And I love all of the different flavors, textures and colors. What a great dish. The pork was great. It had a good amount of crispiness, juiciness and it didn't have any tough bits of fat or connective tissue that are hard to chew. Everything was either crispy or soft and melt-y. Perfect. One of the two types of plantains I've had before and is probably what you're used to, but the other type I've never had before. It is really crispy. I think they must batter and fry it or something. It was so good. I appreciated that it didn't come out oily. The bowl is $14.95 and had a good amount of food. I have a huge appetite and it did a solid job of filling me up. Pretty good value. If I were to nitpick maybe I'd ask for a little more food, but it was fine. The menu does say that plates come with more food for a few extra bucks, but they don't include the avocado and mango. The yellow rice was great. I would highly recommend the Fried Yucca. You don't see a lot of Fried Yucca around Portland, so I would highly recommend getting it. The garlic dipping sauce tasted great. Majito could have used a little more rum, but otherwise tasted great. I won't hesitate to come back here again. Especially for my veg. bowl, with no meat the rest has to really have some good flavor and this did not. We had to go looking for more food, it's not terrible, just bland. We got the Havana Bowl, Fried Yucca, and Lemonade and had enough for two people to eat dinner. We had been looking for Cuban restaurants for a while, and we stumbled on this beautiful restaurant. When you walk in you must first order pay and decide if you're going to tip or not before you ever taste of food or even sit down. Once you've ordered when you find your seat with a number and they fairly quickly bring your food to you we didn't have to wait long. First up was my mango batido, which is basically a mango smoothie. They use real mangoes, bananas, crushed ice, and maybe some cream, and it was very refreshing tropical and tasty. We ordered an appetizer which was empanadas. They brought out three very small empanadas. I was a bit thrown by the taste because they were beef empanadas, but they were sweet. Wasn't certain why either the Dell or the meat had a sweet taste to it. Wasn't bad I just didn't expect it. My wife ordered the pork bowl which came with pulled pork, avocado, beans, and fried bananas. She loved her dish she said the beans were flavorful. The pork was tender, and the fried bananas were juicy. I ordered the Mojo pork plate.
