Tapa is a fairly recent discovery for me, mainly as it's tucked up a wee side street off Duke Street! But, now I've found it I'm going to have to make it a regular pit stop! What I love the most is that you can see the baking happening in front of your eyes, not only that, the wafts of freshly baked bread are amazing! Annoyingly I'd just done my tesco shop so didn't need bread, sigh, but cake? Well that's a whole different ball game! There was lots of choice but after some extreme humming and hawing, I settled on a lemon meringue tart and a chocolate raspberry tart (so I could do half n half, I'm not daft!) along with a couple of flat whites to go. My tarts were promptly boxed up and as I had a wee drive home I asked for the coffees slightly hotter than they would normally do which wasn't a problem at all. The staff were chatty and so lovely that I felt like I'd been a regular for years! Oh AND...they stock my favourite Seed and Bean Espresso chocolate so I may have grabbed that too... There are tables for sitting in but I've not had a chance to do that yet, so another visit is definitely required! So for that reason, 4 star for now, pending follow up visit ;-)

It's rare to find a place like this on a side street in Dennistoun, but discover it I did. Enticed inside by the sign that boasted that Tapa was "one of the world's best bakers", I decided to have a nosey inside. I was instantly in love with the place as I was greeted by the sound of old time jazz and the sight of a counter full of cookies and cakes. Customers are able to have a seat and chill out with one of the newspapers provided as they enjoy the fabulous food within. I opted for a latte and an organic blueberry muffin, which were delicious and cost just over £2 in total. The homely tables and chairs are surrounded by shelves of local and organic produce, including a great variety of bread baked on the premises. I love that this place offers a great selection of veggie and vegan options, with bread and cakes able to be ordered and made freshly to your requirements. I'll definitely be back, as the wonderful combination of the smell of fresh coffee and freshly baked bread is enough to have me hooked

Refried bean burritos with mascarpone and broccoli cous cous salad.

I popped into Tapa Bakehouse earlier today as the sun was shining and it seemed the perfect opportunity to go out for an alfresco lunch. As a vegetarian it can sometimes be tricky to find good spots for eating out, but with a fantastic selection of vegetarian and vegan sweets and savouries, the problem in Tapa Bakehouse is narrowing your choice down from the spread of choices! I was with my boyfriend and - clearly excited by so many vegetarian options - we decided to order refried bean burritos, mascarpone and broccoli cous cous salad, and a potato and egg frittata to share. It was all absolutely delicious and we did actually manage to eat it all! My boyfriend is something of a burrito obsessive, so, after perfecting our at-home recipe, we are often disappointed by vegetarian burrito options when eating out, but the re-fried bean burrito at Tapa Bakehouse is incredible - packed with beans and vegetables, it is full of flavour and cooked to perfection. Even my boyfriend admitted that it is just as good as his own cooking! As well as the delicious food options, we ordered lemonade and ginger beer by the brilliant Karma Cola - the company behind the UK's only Fairtrade organic cola, with a direct relationship with cola farmers in Sierra Leone. The fact they sell products by ethical companies gives Tapa Bakehouse some serious brownie points. I had the lemonade which was sweet and fizzy without tasting artificial. I have to admit, the brilliant packaging was also a big perk! This was my third visit and I'm happy to report the food and service have always been spot on. I've treated myself to cake on previous visits and the sweet treats more than hold their own alongside the savoury dishes. I took my vegan friend for lunch there last month and she was seriously impressed by their creamy, sweet vegan cupcakes! One of my favourite places in Dennistoun.

I don't visit this shop enough but whenever I do, I'm reminded of just how good their selection is for a small shop. I managed to find the nutritional yeast without any issues (it's great for giving things a cheesy flavour, in case you're wondering what it's for! You can use it for macaroni cheese if you're avoiding dairy, mixed in with blended cashews for a cream cheese substitute or on kale for crispy cheesy kale) and also got tempted by the Uber Bars at the counter. I thought I'd tried Uber Bars before but after eating it, I don't actually think I had - they're made in Glasgow and are made from raw dried fruit, nuts and seeds. I got a chocolate topped tropical one and it was amazing. So delicious, felt a bit indulgent and really pepped up my afternoon. I like having a browse of this store as I feel like I discover something amazing on every visit. The only reason it's not 5-star is that the staff sometimes are a bit unorganised - on this visit, the person serving was trying to serve someone else, even though he hadn't actually finished his shopping. So just left me standing there while he faffed about. I just wanted to pay and leave! Anyway, it's still a great shop and well worth a visit when you're in Finnieston.

Wouldn't it be lovely to be able to buy your fruit and vegetables from the green grocer, your meat…read morefrom the butcher, your fish from the fishmonger, cheese from the cheese monger, bread from the bakery and so on? Of course it would, but that would be awfully expensive, right? Well in the case of fruit and vegetables from the green grocer, that doesn't have to be true if you're going to roots and fruits. Really, it's slightly reductionist to refer Roots and Fruits as a green grocer. As well as beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables they sell teas, coffees, cereals, bread (mostly from Kember and Jones), eggs, meat, herbs and spices, milk, fruit, flowers and almost everything else you could need. Plus there's a small deli section offering soups, salads and other little delicious bits and pieces. Given the focus on ethical food here you feel like it should be expensive but it just isn't. I always expect my bill to run higher than it does. I'm always surprised at how much I'm able to buy even before I factor in my student discount. That's not to say I don't often end up buying items beyond those which I went in for - with so much to offer it's hard to avoid picking up something new to try. Nevertheless it's always unexpectedly cheap. There used to be more stores like this on Argyle Street. Companies like Tesco and Sainsburys priced them out and now only Roots and Fruits is left. I like that it's there as an option and I hope that it remains as an option for a long time, so even if it were more expensive I'd probably still choose to shop here when I can. Since it's less expensive it's actually foolish not to.

This place is an absolute Aladdin's cave of healthy ingredients. Yes, INGREDIENTS! Many health food stores sell healthy food products (and there are those here as well), but Real Foods has all the raw ingredients you could ever need to make healthy foods at home. That means you can tailor the recipes to fit your eating needs - without having to read labels and pay a premium for someone else to prepare and package the foods. So, if you've bought that healthy 'Raw, Vegan or the lastest Superfood cookbook and need to 'google' half the ingredients - don't worry; they'll be here! You may need to do some searching up and down the narrow aisles; sucking in your tummy as you squeeze past other shoppers - but it's all part of the fun - and if that's not your thing - go online and place an order - they even deliver! Some of my top tips: -most ingredients (such as nuts, seeds, dried fruit) have a regular or organic option - organic labels are green -The Real Food packaged goods come in small, medium an large packs. The price per kilo usually is less for the bigger packs - so if you know you'll use it up - go for the bigger bags -If you love coconut oil - look out for their 2 for £10 special on organic coconut oil! -Missed the Saturday market at Castle Terrace? But the New Leaf sells only organic produce. And it seems that this reflects on having ripe fruit. Really delicious ripe fruit. The New Leaf doesn't only sell food, though. They also sell a range of eco-friendly detergents and cleaning supplies such as Ecoleaf. You can buy yourself some Ecoleaf washing up liquid and then go back when you've gone through it and get it re-filled for cheaper. You might even feel like you're being a good person. The possibilities are infinite. But on their food front: they get fresh bread delivered most days. They get delectable baked goods delivered from the Engine Shed on Wednesdays and Fridays, too. I got kind of addicted to this parmesan-herb-bread-twirl thing once upon a time, so I know when the deliveries happen. They also sell sun-dried tomatoes that aren't marinated and are much cheaper than buying the marinated ones. Here's a secret: marinating your own sun-dried tomatoes is dead easy. And you'll also save yourself a lotta moolah. So yeah, if you're veggie, or feel like you kind of care about the environment, stop by the New Leaf. They're always really helpful in there. Virtually all the food is very expensive and a lot of it isn't even specialist stuff. However, this is missing the point as all their fruit and vegetables are organic, fresh and ripe. Further, if you're lactose, wheat, gluten or anything else intolerant then it sells great, healthy alternatives to many foods for you to enjoy. If you've got specific dietary needs then this is the place. Unfortunately, it comes at a price.

If you are passing, make a point of stopping off here to browse in the shop or have a snack. If you are on the south side of Edinburgh, it's only 20 minutes or so in the car to get here and is well worth the effort. I had a couple of hours free, so I drove out from Edinburgh for lunch. On the menu, the hake and fennel fishcakes caught my eye, so I ordered those with some sweet potato wedges on the side. The fishcakes were delicious (even if they did have to buy those in), as were the sweet potato wedges. With a Belvoir ginger beer to wash it down, I was well satisfied. As I wasn't in a rush, I decided to follow with a slice of polenta cake and a coffee. The cake was a little on the dry side - I guess maybe polenta cake isn't their best-seller - and the coffee, although perfectly fine, was maybe not the best I've ever had. But the place was quiet, and for under £20 it was a pretty reasonable and high-quality lunch. So do go and patronise this place, they are doing wonders on a shoestring to promote organic farming practices and food; it so deserves your support.
