I'd have to say that this cafe is pretty much my favorite one while I lived in Glasgow. I frequented it almost once a week. Now that I'm back in America, I miss this place a lot! Glaswegians, your cafes have definitely spoiled me and I can't find anything that compares to this in the U.S. When you walk in, you automatically get this cozy and warm feeling. Try to get a seat in the upstairs dining area, because this is where you will feel the most warmth. I also like sitting in the bar stools by the window because I like looking outside at the rain. If you find yourself waiting for a table, just take that time to browse the pastries, savory foods laid out, and even their selection of cookbooks. Their selection of cake and tarts change daily, but if they have leftovers one day then they serve the leftovers the next day until they are gone, but a lot of the time their pastries sell out on the first day. Bonus to this is that your pastries are definitely fresh! But the pastries still taste good even if they are a day old. Trust me. My go-to pastries were the Belgian Chocolate Cake or the vanilla custard tarts. This cake has hazelnuts inside of it and is served with raspberries, chocolate bits, dusted with sugar on top. If you love chocolate, this cake is the way to go. The vanilla custard tarts reminded me of home (because I would get Egg Tarts at Chinese bakeries and this vanilla custard tart tasted just like a egg tart) The only difference is that the tart at Kember & Jones had flaky layers of crust, which made the tart even better. My go-to drinks are hot chocolate or the Moroccan Fresh Mint Tea. The hot chocolate is served with foam and little chocolate bits on top. The Mint tea is served in a clear glass, but it comes hot (which was weird because I didn't think you would serve hot drinks in a glass) but I understood why because it has a bunch of mint leaves in it that changes the color of the drink to a light tan. It's cute and if you have a sore throat, it will make you feel better. Other things that I have tried and loved were the Warm Waffle (because it was served with syrup and fresh fruit), the French Lemonade (It was pink lemonade with a little bit of sourness), and the macarons (They make different ones each week. Try all of them because they go fast! I have to say during Christmas time their Christmas pudding one tastes pretty good, too.) Last thing to note is that the staff is very nice. Grab a table upstairs in the colder months to avoid the draft from the door (tables downstairs are a bit squishy as well). A cafe enthusiast hailing from two cafe capitals (NYC and LA), I am new to Glasgow and thus slowly finding my places. For me, a great cafe is a place where one can get delicious coffee, where one can reflect, be it a chance to type away at a computer, scribble in a notepad or read a engrossing book, and/or a place where one can be social and engaged in lively conversation with friends. The possibility of a good nibble (real food and/or pastry items) is always a plus but not a requirement. Staff that are helpful and welcoming, to me, is absolutely necessary. To be met with anything less than a welcome is a major downfall and failure for an establishment. Who wants to come in from the busy streets to be met with hostility or a sour greeting? In my book, a cafe is an oasis and every aspect of the environment should reflect and support this. Kember and Jones meets my requirements on pretty much all of these fronts. The coffee here (I'm a latte and cappuccino coffee drinker) is consistently good, the food is very good, as it offers healthy options using quality ingredients, and the cakes are always delicious. (If you are looking for bread to take home, it's also a good resource.) The atmosphere is one that welcomes those who are there to meet with friends, as well as those who are looking to work for a while, and/or unwind for a bit with a warm cup of coffee and food. And the staff of Kember and Jokes are always the helpful. I have never been met with anything but kindness when I have come in, and have never felt anything but welcomed upon my arrival. They contribute to the pleasantness of the place, to be sure, and are always thoughtful in how they tend to patrons while also respecting their space. Kember and Jones is well-lit, which I think is helpful for those who are going solo and for those there to work for a bit. The wifi is also a positive feature (it's something I think all cafes should have in this day and age, to be honest ). If you are looking for a cozy cafe with couches, Kember and Jones won't be the place; the cafe is comfortable as it has decent backed chairs and booths and thus supports conversation and solo time with your food and coffee but not lounging. Note too, that Kember and Jones is a bit more expensive than some of the other cafes in the area. There is a significant difference in the price of the food when you sit-in versus when you take away, something that I do feel is unfortunate. But it would be shame if this deters you from a visit, as I do think time there is worthwhile and positive. And so, I am a fan of Kember and Jones, and do recommend it. Another fine Byres Road institution, Kember & Jones always seems to be packed around lunchtime, so I seldom get the chance to check it out. However, as they cater reasonably well for gluten free diets it was the obvious choice for lunch with my sister. As usual, I had to wait for a table, which gave the chance for a brief perusal of the deli shelves and books along the wall. I've never actually been tempted to buy anything from there, but it gives you something to look at to pass the time. After only a few minutes a small corner table materialised upstairs, and I checked out the menu while waiting on sis. Given that it was lunchtime and the place was heaving, I was somewhat surprised to see a student ensconced with laptop and lots of papers taking up a four-person table by herself, no doubt making use of the free Wi-Fi. There wasn't even a cup of coffee in sight to suggest that she'd actually bought anything. I thought it was very tolerant of K&J not to ask her to move to a smaller table or even remove herself completely as it was a busy period. Feeling decidedly peckish myself, I took the advice of our server and decided to order both the soup of the day (barley broth) and a main plate, which was sweet potato falafel with chilli sauce, yoghurt and flatbread. The soup also came with bread, so it was a bit piggy; however both dishes disappeared without too much effort. My sis opted for a tuna nicoise salad, which turned out to be so enormous that she had trouble finishing it. Although we are both fans of their gluten-free polenta cake, we were both too stuffed to manage a portion, so instead I finished off with an Americano, which I think must have been double-shot as it certainly kept me going the rest of the afternoon. A very satisfactory lunch, if somewhat over-indulgent. The only thing that stops me frequenting this place more often is the price, which is a bit steep. But then, it is a prime spot on Byres Road so you have to allow for that. read more

Kember & Jones is my indulgent place. It's a bit too expensive for my student wallet to visit often, but whenever I go, everything is perfect. The staff are friendly, and the decor is rustic but comfortable. They have a beautiful display of baked goods that is way too tempting. I usually go for the fresh mint tea, which super refreshing. K&J lattes are also some of the best in the area. And Styli swears by the cappuccinos. Now, the prices can seem expensive, but you do get full portions. Sandwiches or tarts are served with a couple types of salads, which are amazingly tasty and fresh. Last time I was there I had a cauliflower and almond soup that was to die for. And it came with a basket of baked in-house bread. Not bad at all for £4.50. I'm always tempted by the little macarons by the counter, and I've definitely bought a treat on the way out, once or twice. I recommend everyone stop by at least once when they're escaping the Glasgow dampness! read more

I've tried to come here before, but the place was way too packed, and I didn't want to wait for a seat. So I went this morning for a little Monday breakfast instead. The waitress from Sydney who served us was absolutely lovely, the coffee here is one of the best roasts you'll find in Glasgow, and the food was nice too (we just had a beautifully presented basket of muffins and croissants and things). I'll definitely keep to coming off-peak for this place, because even then there were a healthy number of occupied tables, but absolutely no wait on the coffees etc. I'm going to grab a loaf of bread to try next time -- looks delicious! read more

I came by K&J after a long walk and needed that caffeine boost with a snack before home. when l walked in l was approached by a young waitress who asked "can l help you" my instant reaction was pardon and she said it again. I apologised thinking that they where closed and l came at an inconveniently bad time to be then told were open till 10pm. This simply showed that the staff had poor training and where never shown how to serve customers. I placed my order and arrived after 10 minuets l had my coffee and home made cake. There was two people who sat next to me and they where given the same treatment and where about to leave as they also thought they where closed. They where given a menu each and after a few minutes the same waitress that served me asked them "what do you want". Overall the food that l had was first class and the coffee as good as little Italy. But the service has a lot to be desired and let the rest of the team down. Would l come again! well maybe one day would go but rather little Italy as the staff are friendly, chatty and welcoming, good service can make up for bad food but good food cannot make up for bad service. 5/5 For food 2/5 for service read more

Kember & Jones is a lovely café. The place itself is beautiful, and I love the little upper floor that looks out on the rest of the place. The first time I went for lunch, and had a really delicious soup, along with some bread (we got a very large selection of bread - more than enough!), plus a chocolate cake to finish. The second time I went only for cake and coffee. Both times everything was delicious. The service was great both times I went and the staff were lovely, but then again both times I went it was rather quiet, so I don't know how it would've been if it was busier! The only thing I might have against this place is that it's quite expensive, and feels a bit overpriced. While the food was really good, I didn't feel it was quite worth the price. I would definitely go back again for some lunch or some cake, but I must admit that how expensive it is puts me off a little bit. Other than that, it's a great place! read more

Went over with my partner and close friend for some coffee and cake. This time, my experience was definitely much better than before. The caffe latte I had was pretty good, not bitter at all (perhaps their coffee depends on the barista working the shift? Who knows). I steered away from the macarons, seeing as I can't trust theirs anymore (I'm too much of a macaron fanatic and the ones he disappointed me before). Even though I noticed they were freshly made (or stocked up I'm not sure), I wasn't gonna take the risk! Instead, I tried their beetroot, poppy seed cake with vanilla icing. This cake, I enjoyed! A little bit on the dry side though, but in terms of flavour, it was yum and not too sweet (which is a win for me). At the end of the day, we managed to get the last of their bread too. One with figs in it and another, tomato and basil. They were £1.25 each, since those were the last ones for the day. I've tried the fig one and it's really good! The staff today were really friendly. I shall conclude with one short feedback for the business. Your baked goods and coffee are pretty good (I'm sure the food is too but I'll have to return to give it a try), but please, be more consistent! With late opening hours and a handy location on Byres Road, this place is a great alternative to meeting your friends or a date on a Friday night. I had a lovely cup of tea and the most delicious slice of Belgian chocolate cake. I could only eat half as the portion was so generous and was impressed at being asked if i'd like to have the rest boxed up. My friends nearly went into a sugar coma after each devoured a massive white meringue atop whipped cream and jewel coloured juicy mixed berries. The staff were delightful and after a minor incident which isn't worth mentioning, my friend was comped their meringue. First class customer service exhibited! Kember and Jones has a huge selection of food and drink options available and as were told, it's all baked either in store or in their own bakery in Maryhill. It would be easy to be tempted to purchase a muesli or biscotti bar on the way out but we managed to resist (until our next visit at least). read more

Yesterday, we went to get hot chocolate here and it smelled so amazing inside that we decided to come back for breakfast (and coffee) today. As for the coffee- my cappuccino was perfect and so was the latte, according to my friend. The white hot chocolate we got the other day was unfortunately a disappointment though. It's not that it tasted bad (altough my friend didn't like it and didn't even finish hers), but the consistency was what really put me off. It was more like warm sweet milk with cinnamon and spices in it, rather than white chocolate, which I was imagining to be rich and thick. Anyway, today we went back to try the food, I got the warm ham & cheese sourdough toast and my friend got avocado on rye bread. Both came very fast and looked good. My toast was all I expected it to be, really yummy and just like one my mom would make me at home. My friend was also really satisfied with her choice, saying the avocado was wonderful. I really like the atmosphere of this place and the staff is welcoming and helpful. It's in a brilliant location and I'm sure I'll be back to try some more of their food and would suggest you do the same, if you're in the area! read more

Kember and Jones is a great spot for lunch on Byres Road. Whether you're looking for a quick sandwich to take away or you're planning on sitting down to something more interesting and whiling away a couple of luxurious hours there's plenty here to keep you happy. If you're sitting in then there's table service available, so get comfy. They usually have a few daily specials available and the ones I've tried have generally been great. Their platters and cheese boards are delicious too. Taking away narrows your options a little, but the choice is still good. They normally have a selection of sandwiches already made up but they do sometimes run out at lunch time, in which case they'll happily put together something else for you. The soups are interesting and adventurous here, and often spicy and if you can resist the cakes you've stronger willpower than me. Speaking of cakes, they do most (if not all) of their own baking and their loaves of bread are really, really good. You can also find them in branches of Roots, Fruits and Flowers, if this Byres Road branch of Kember and Jones isn't handy for you. Things can sometimes run a little pricey here, but they're selling premium ingredients, so it's easy to see why. Of course, getting your food to go is cheaper. The only thing I don't like is that whoever decides on the sandwich fillings loves beetroot too much. I hate beetroot but maybe that's just me. read more

I was drawn to Kember and Jones by their lovely sheepskin throws and cosy blankets on the chairs outside; perfect for that particularly chilly December day. As I walked inside, I feasted my eyes on their delicious selection of cakes and pastries, as my boyfriend made a beeline for the impressively stocked cheese counter. Locals queued up to be seated in the upstairs cafe area, whilst others were stocking up at the dessert and deli counters. I have been a loyal K&J fan since the heady and crazy days of 2004. I remember often of an evening sitting with a friend over a delicious cappuccino and a *huge* fruit scone with butter and jam (this was pretty much what we always ordered at 1st because that's HOW amazing the fruit scones were! ) and we would actually 9 times out of 10 be sitting long past closing hours (it didn't open as late then) with staff sweeping and tidying up around us. I have to add not once were we ever asked to leave and since having had some bad experiences in other West End cafes (I'll get to that review one day!) this is what makes K&J such a special place - I have never felt rushed or hurried whilst in there and the whole atmosphere I find thoroughly relaxing. If you're lucky to get a window seat or a seat near the railings on the mezzanine it is a great place for people-watching (one of my favourite hobbies) and also cake-watching too...drool... All the cakes and pastries are hand made on site and vary from day to day. Since my early K&J days I have since ventured into the cake-zone a few times and every single one has been gorgeous. My current fave on the menu is the (rather doorstep-like) Ham, Cheese and Wholegrain Mustard Sandwich. This is a beast! Nom nom...comes with tasty bean salad and crisps too. For afters (coz I is posh) I'm a sucker for their (also HUGE) meringues which come with cream and seasonal berries. So beautiful is the sight of this meringue that once a lady on the table next to me stated that if i didn't 'manage' to eat it all (Ha ha! Good one!) then she would happily 'help me'. Needless to say she didn't get a look in. The coffee here is also wonderful and I always favour the cappuccino for it's creamy foam and yummy chocolate shavings. Good shiz. The only thing that does miff me about Kember & Jones is that there is only the one and because it is quite on the small side you do sometimes have to queue. Especially on a Saturday afternoon. But, if you're not in a hurry then I would say it is worth the wait. Kember and Jones is impeccable foodwise. It's hard to know what to write because the food here is always amazing no matter what you order. It's a very "West End" type of joint but you actually get a mixed crowd in here with students and older (wealthier) people sitting side by side. I find the serving staff a little unfriendly, not rude but not the type of waiters/waitresses that you'd have a chat with. This is probably because they're very busy almost all the time and that's the one drawback to the place, you may have to queue for a seat. However once seated you don't feel like you're in a hectic environment and can really relax and enjoy the food. I went today and had a slice of pecan pie which was wonderful. In the past I've enjoyed their salads which are huge. I'm looking forward to trying one of their platters after seeing photos on Instagram, wow! read more

This place seems to be a real Byres Road drawcard and I've visited it a few times. None of those visits really stuck in my mind as outstanding, but I was keen to give it another try for lunch when meeting up with the awesome Carolyn E for a catch up. We arrived and it was heaving, so there was a queue for tables along the wall. I feel bad for the people sitting at the table right in front of this as it must feel a bit uncomfortable. Staff were a little haphazard already, seeming confused and rushed off their feet. I wasn't keen to wait long and gave them a 10 minute time limit, we were probably seated in 8 minutes. Mind you, the bench seat we were sat at (by the window) had been empty the whole time we waited so I'm not really sure why we had to wait so long for them to clear the table when there was so many people waiting (at one point there was at least 10 people queuing). Looking over the menu, all I could think was "sheeesh!" It is seriously expensive to eat here. There isn't much you can get for a reasonable price - sandwiches are £7.95 and salads are £9.95. Takeaway prices are a lot more reasonable! I went for the rare roast beef salad which I've had before and I remembered they were very generous with the rocket. I forgot to ask for no horseradish though, and spent a while trying to scrape it off everything (also on my condiments-I-hate list). The salad was very generous and lots of roast beef under all that salad. I'd definitely consider here for a takeaway option but would hesitate before dining-in again. read more

A K&J breakfast is the stuff of foodie dreams. They make the fluffiest waffles I've ever had... and never skimp on quality. It is one of the few places where I know that if it says Maple Syrup on the menu, then maple syrup from an actual maple tree will be on my plate. It's true that they have a narrow menu of light bites, salads, and sweets. This is not the place for a gut-busting meal. But if you know your food and hold quality over variety then K&J is happy place where you can linger over your meal without being pressured to vacate your seat. I never knew this place existed until I met my German tandem partner a few years ago. She was working in Glasgow as an au pair and we decided to meet up having signed up for the tandem scheme through the Goethe Institute so she could improve her English and I could improve my German. The woman she was working for was always at Kember and Jones and told her that she really needed to visit it as they have to most delicious scones. My tandem partner suggested we go together and I didn't need any persuasion as I'm never going to turn down a scone! It was a summer days and there were people sitting outside when we arrived, there wasn't any space left so we had to sit inside. This didn't bother me as it was nice and cool anyway and the whole shop smelled delicious, like freshly baked bread. Mmm... Now we were here, we had to try the scones! I can confirm, they are the best scones ever! Not the cheapest, but I'm not going to complain as they were rather tasty! Although Kember and Jones is rather fancy it still has a really chilled out, relaxed atmosphere and you could easily spend hours here eating your way through their huge selection of scrumptious cakes. As well as the cafe they also have a shop and a deli so can choose fresh meats, sausages and cheeses, I just love delis and would happily have taken a choice of everything instead, I bought a packet of risotto rice and some chai tea-bags. After looking at the delicious deli I was inspired to go home and cook my own risotto for my family and it went down a treat! I look forward to going to Kember and Jones soon, I just hope I can get a nice window seats for a spot of people watching while feasting on a scone. read more

The coffee isn't anything to write home about but it's good quality nevertheless. Their hummus and tapenade are tasty options so don't forget to check them out in the deli counter. When the temptation gets too much (because it will) make your way over to the cake counter and fantasize shamefully about eating ALL of them. If you want my advice, though, go for the lemon and almond cake. It actually tastes like heaven. This is officially my new favourite evening activity. I'm also thinking about expanding into ordering one of their delightful weekend breakfast boxes. When this place opened up it reminded me of a café that belonged in New York or Sydney- it's almost un-Glasgow-like with its black & white shiny floor- high shelves stocked with expensive food stuffs and its busy straight-laced staff running around the place. Last Saturday I took a friend there for tea and cake and I was very impressed with the service- despite taking the last table we were seen promptly. My first experience of Kember and Jones was on a sunny day after a horrendous three hour exam. My friend and I decided we needed a sugary treat and a hit of sunshine and popped in here when we noticed the wee seat outside was free. I was so glad we did when I saw all the home-baked cakes on display! It was like heaven for a chocolate-craving post-exam gal like me. I eventually decided on some sort of chocolatey treat - I can't remember what it was as I just saw it, my eyes popped and I pointed at it through the glass, drooling. It was absolutely delicious and I almost (almost) couldn't finish it. It wasn't cheap but absolutely perfect for an afternoon treat. The reason for the five stars, however, are the raves from my aunt who has named this place the best on Byres Road for lunch. She and her friends absolutely adore it and she talks so highly of it that I just fall it love it with it a little bit more after every review from her. I had to pop in myself and it was just as expected - excellent service and fantastic quality. A little bit pricey but you don't seem to mind. You might have to queue for a table on a busy day, however. read more

The other two reviewers have pretty much summed up this place - it's well presented, it's delicious and brilliant. The food is fresh, tasty and of a very high standards - sit in our takeout. They have tables upstairs, downstairs and outside - they've got it all, and the tables downstairs, as compact as they may be, are ideal to sit and people watch on Byres Road. The one thing the other two reviewers missed out is the Kember and Jones breakfast boxes - who in Glasgow is willing to wander round to your home at 9am, on a saturday morning, with a box full of breakfast goodies... that's right! For many year I heard the best things about this little heaven on Byres Road such as the best cup of coffee in Glasgow and the tastiest lunches this end of town. Well how right they all were. A few Saturday's ago, after wandering aimlessly around the West End and en route back to the flat we decided to go for a wee bite to eat. "You've not been to Kember and Jones yet, have you?!" came a chirpy voice in my ear, and so we went. We had a little wait for a table but I was assured this was normal, and in fact a 10minute wait on a Saturday afternoon was actually rather good. The day we went was after a rather heavy night so I ordered a coffee while i decided what I wanted and buy Jebus what a coffee it was. They must have a very talented barista behind that bar. I opted for a huge plate of steaming soup to start with and a massive club sandwhich for my main (I must point out that I hadn't anticipated having seperate courses here, but the food was just too good!). We were a little rushed by our server which can be a little grating but she quickly lost interest when it was obvious we were taking our time! I had an iced ginger bread and another cup of coffee to wash it down with. The icing was the stickiest, smoothest, whitest icing I've ever had and the ginger bread had a distinctive spice about it too often left out of good iced ginger bread. This place always has a long queue of folk waiting for a table at lunch time so it took me years before I finally checked this place out and... I was totally underwhelmed by the menu and sandwiches. I just don't get why anybody would wait for a table here, clearly I'm missing something... read more

This place rocks!!! Best Cappuccino EVER! So damn good. There salads are great as well. Loved the Blueberry Banana Bread but did not like the Lemon almond polenta cake. It was a bit dry and crumbly.Over all though this place is the cats meow. I came to Glasgow three years ago with some friends for a day trip and we found this place, loved this place. Today I wanted to share it with the most important person in the World to me. It took us a while to find it again but it was worth the effort. Even though I did not like my polenta cake I still give this place 5 stars because they really deserve it. It IS a 5 start business and other cafes/restaurants/businesses could learn from them. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, service was great, and most of all the are very talented at what they do at this Fine Food Emporium. read more

We popped into this shop as part of our goal to try new coffee shops in the west end. We were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed it, we had good service and the mocha and banana blueberry bread were great! Again for me, the free wifi is a plus and there was a mouth watering selection of pastries (although this is quite common along byres road). I would recommend a visit! read more

The last time I came in here I ordered a takeaway soya latte and it was amazing. Lots of froth and tasty soya was used. Cakes have been hit or miss depending on what we have bought here. The macarons were dry and old tasting so I won't even go near them. The handmade marshmallows look really good. I did get a peppermint tea here at one point but it was pretty bland. read more

Delicious cakes and coffee in here. Nice and cosy place to have a chat with a friend over a good coffee and stay warm on a horrible Glasgow winter day! Deli food options look delicious too. Recommend the Moroccan mint tea! read more
