After research and hiring a CSIA certified company, we learned this advice is directly contrary to established safety guidance. Stage 3 creosote is highly flammable and requires chemical treatment or professional removal before a fireplace can be safely used again. The Chimney Safety Institute of America is explicit on this point. Following Johnston's guidance in our report could have caused a chimney fire. We requested a refund given that the inspection included advice that put our home and family at risk, they refuse to acknowledge their fault. We did not feel we received an accurate or professional service. We will be sure to look for that CSIA certification going forward, there are plenty of family owned-- in business for decades, chimney companies in our area that can be relied on to give safe and accurate advice.
