I was invited to eat here by some local friends and boy were they right! This is the best Authentic Mexican Food in town! I got the camarones rancheros (order #23). It came with refried beans, rice, and a tomatoe-based sauce with onions, avocado, and sliced jalapeños. The taste was perfect; the temperature was hot and fresh; the texture was tantalizing. Taqueria Mexico 2 is one of three Mexican restaurants in the town of Rocky Ford. That's excluding the taco roach coach that you can usually find near the Loaf n' Jug. As you may know, I come from a land of many options.. & where a good amount of taqueria's are top notch. Ahhh, my beloved California. That being said, rumor has it that TM2 is the most authentic of all three Mexican joints in Rocky. I was eager to compare this place to my norm. So, I had dinner here with my family during a friends get together. The back dining room area was packed with our party of about 40+. We all ordered at the same time and started to receive our orders about 20 minutes after the ticket was entered. Not too bad considering we flooded their kitchen in addition to the other patrons in the house. The food was descent. The complimentary chips were fresh and the salsa had a nice kick. Our plates were surprisingly pricey for the quality and shabby environment but I guess I should have expected them to be on the higher side since there aren't many eateries nor massive amounts of patrons in this area. My chili relleno was okay but far from GOOOD. I'm a total rice & beans gal and I could have done without theirs. Our table ordered a nacho supreme, deep fried whole fish plate, and a carnitas plate as well. Everyone seemed happy with their meals but the nachos were a little disappointing. It came with round corn chips (I'm assuming from a bag), nacho cheese, beans, and ground beef. Felt a bit like a concession stand special. Other then the food, IMHO, they should de-clutter the place, give it a good scrub and add a fresh coat of paint to the walls to boost it's appeal. I'm sure the back of the house needs tons of work as well. I'm a little iffy on how clean the kitchen is which is one of the reasons for the 2 star rating. The little big town of LaJunta "Rocky Ford" you have little to no options. The places to be seen are at Sonic Burger, Safeway, drive through liquor store and the mother of them all... Taqueria Mexico. The draw for simple LA folks like us was the cheap margaritas. I went with the locals favorite, green chili smothered burrito. Lets just say it filled the stomach atleast. What the word is around town is this place is a cover for the local Mexican mafia. The big man comes in on the weekends in his pressed suit with the cronnies and hold his top secret meetings. Pretty good little place for a Mexican food meal. I had the chicken chimi - I'm used to more filling, but the flavor was good. Loved the salsa. Chips were fresh, but chips and salsa are not complimentary. (They''re cheap, but if you're watching your dollars, keep that in mind.) The margaritas were pretty good. Everything seemed clean. The ambiance was nice (some areas are a little more intimate, which was unexpected) The wait staff was courteous. read more

At first the place looks scary if you aren't used to authentic Mexican food but it is seriously the best authentic Mexican food I've had in a long time! Don't be scared to try them you won't regret it! Definitely what we needed on a long road trip from Colorado Springs. Staff were very nice. read more

If I graded on the food alone (and all I've had was the al pastor tacos) I'd have graded higher, but I made the mistake of entering the place. The inside was ... cluttered. Boxes stacked against walls, unplugged appliances piled up, one corner looked like a retail nook with a bunch of dirty boots and shoes on shelves. The rest was too dimly lit to determine where the storage stopped and the restaurant started. The only thing missing was rusting Folgers cans full of nuts, bolts, and fishhooks and I'd have thought I stumbled into my Dad's garage. The food, however was great! The tacos had the right amount of heat and sweet, the meat was good quality, and the fixings were fresh and good. My only misgiving was eating it after seeing where it came from. We trek through that area a few times a year, and we'll most likely be by there if there are no other options for tacos and we're in a hurry. That said I'll expect a tidier and more appetizing interior next time. read more

When you don't have a lot of restaurants to go to except for fast food joints, I can see why this place is popular and why locals find it "good". Margaritas were $1.99 ($2.99??). That's a cheap margarita, but cheap tequila of course. The favorite from my table was the bean & cheese burrito "smothered". It was your basic burrito. Nothing too special. The flavors were bland. I ordered the chimichanga, but it arrived "smothered" as well. Once again, bland and I didn't enjoy the "smothering" of it. Great food. Shabby ambience. My companion had a huge bowl of the special green chili filled with chunks of tender pork and potatoes. Definitely a two tissue lunch. First off, I'm a stickler for false advertising. The roadside electronic sign advertised a $1.99 "first margarita" offer; however, the menu listed them at $2.99 and the manager/owner (who wouldn't even come out to speak with us) wouldn't allow the server to honor the advertised price. To his/her credit, the price on the roadside signs was adjusted the next morning. Next is the menu, the actual menu. I've never been so overwhelmed with such a vast selection of combinations, and more combinations referenced as specials. There were literally four pages. A recommendation that I would propose is to offer a generic Combination price that comes with the basic staples and a customer choice of 2 entree items at one price point or 3 entree items at a higher price point - then list all the options and let the customer choose. It would simplify the menu and make the ordering experience simpler for the customer (although I'm sure you love your order by number structure to keep it simple for the kitchen). As it stands, be ready to read through every possible combination of typical Mexican Food selections. Now the food. It's just so-so. Queso Fundido was a cheese and chorizo creation. The chorizo had superb flavor, but the dish overall was just a sticky, solid, greasy mass. Also, the menu listed four tortillas with this appetizer; however, when asked whether we wanted corn or flour torillas, we weren't told that ordering flour tortillas meant we only got two. Re-fried beans were not flavored, even a little salt and pepper go a long way, but there was none. The meat in my chimi was under-seasoned and relied on the green chili smother to make up for the lack of flavor. My partner's carnitas tacos had excellent flavor, but were literally tortilla & meat. They did put a small sprinkling of shredded lettuce and a teaspoon worth of sour cream on the side, but certainly not enough for four tacos. It reminded me more of street tacos versus dine-in tacos. Finally, the decor is so confusing here. There are fish tanks, one containing a very sad and cramped sting ray. Just didn't seem like there was enough space for such a magnificent creature. One positive was our server. She was very nice and attentive, highly apologetic for the poor advertising and her inability to make the correction. PS, she noted that we weren't the only customer to complain. read more

Not worth the money I spent at this place. I can't believe they charge you for chips & salsa No really they do that only tells me one thing. Business is not so good or a cheap owner trying to pull every dime out of this place. I came to the area to visit my nephew as he lives in la junta. He needs his head examined talk about being out in the middle of nowhere! So driving in I stopped at (Taqueria Mexico 2) for a quick bit to eat. Now to set the stage the city of rocky ford is limited on sit down restaurants as well as any other type of businesses or industry. A place that time forgot or passed by. No prosperity anywhere in this town, where people walking do the dead man shuffle. I ordered well the wait is outrageous once your order is taken, not very many people in this restaurant during lunch. I can see why very dirt run down restaurant that needs a major face lift. If my phone would of been charged I could of checked the reviews first hand instead of experiencing this mess first hand! Reminded me of a dirty taco truck parked on the side of the road that you stay away from. Or a wannabe bakery and or a flea market vendor. Good Mexican food in a very limited market. The service was prompt and friendly. The menu has a very good selection. I had the Tacos Al Pastor and they were very good. The chile rellanos were authentic - just like the ones I used to get in Guadalajara. Rocky Ford does not have a lot of choice in restaurants and we think this is one of the best. read more
