Our last stop in McAllen before departing and it didn't let us down. It was Sunday afternoon so this place was boomin! We got sat but it didn't take a long time for us to get greeted and taken care of. But once she did come, we got things rolling. Hubby and I once again got a handful of tacos and he decided to try one with "sweet bread." Didn't enjoy that one, the texture was too mushy and not pleasant. But the rest tasted good. The beans/pork cup they gave us had a good flavor but there were just big chunks of pork fat in them so we didn't really eat those. My friend got something popular in the area called "sincronizada" and it was like this giant burrito. We all helped each other eat it and devoured the rest of the tacos. The staff was extremely nice and the restaurant has a very home-y atmosphere. The prices were also extremely reasonable. The food however was very disappointing. It was an hour and a half before close so that might have contributed to the food quality, but the food was very bland. The potato was scrumptious and the bistek tacos were okay (a little dry for my taste), but the trompos tacos were truly abhorrent. It sort of tasted like how Home Depot smelled. The beans were also quite bland and required the support of 1 whole lime and an assortment of seasonings to make it decent. There are a significant amount of 5 star reviews on this place so maybe this was just an off-day for them. Perhaps I'll try again someday. Been eating here for 20+ years. The food has consistently stayed good and inexpensive. The flour tortillas are excellent, and the corn tortillas are not overly oily. The papas are usually good, but every once in a while they skimp out on the toppings. But you can always ask for more! The servings are excellent, with a taco combo (2 flour tacos, small potato, drink, and beans) being only $9! The only things that are not consistently good are the beans, but they've been good more consistently lately. Oh, and both the salsas, red and green, are good without being overly spicy. I finally got to try this spot after hearing very good things about it. There are plenty of taquerias down the same street, but I doubt that any are as good. It was already getting late, so I got an order of Tacos de Maiz [corn] to-go. I asked the lady about the beans, and she gave me a cup for FREE. :0) The order of 6 tacos was HUGE, 3x Fajita/3x Bistek. They come w/ the standard "fixins" of cilantro + cooked/raw onions, they also included a cooked jalapeño which was a nice touch. The Beans were good, and the tacos were very good and filled w/ plenty of protein. The salsa verde is also tasty, and pretty mild. I used to live five minutes from this place growing up. I made the biggest mistake of my life moving to NYC seven years ago only because it means I get to come here just once a year when I go home for the holidays. This is my first stop after I land at MFE. If I could, I'd have the pilot land directly at this place. Their fajita tacos were delicious. Beware if you don't like oily or greasy tacos because they are a bit oily, I'm guessing from when they fry their tortillas in oil. Charro beans are so good. They could be a bit spicier for me but for those of you who don't care for spiciness the beans will be in your ballpark. They do charge for refills so drink cautiously but all their beverages are in a can or a bottle like the Mexican sodas, except for their aguas frescas. In general, it's a good place to try out. Don't come here often because I live on the other side of town but when in that area I do try to make a point to stop in and eat. read more
