This is place was gold! The environment is for every occasion, big family gatherings, friends, and/or connect with loved ones with an important theme--TACOS! With not wanting to miss out on any specific specialty taco, I decided to go with their Sampler Plus and boy was I happy to do that. Decided to do two Tacos El Plebe, Taco el Rojo, El de Asada, and Taco El Compa. If I had to choose, the Taco El Plebe had the edge but none of these disappointed. The sauces were on point and for the first time in a while, I felt that great kick but not over bearing. The grilled onions was just the cherry on top of tacos. And Tuesdays seems to be free cup of Frijoles Mamalones I was happy to be trying this place on a Tuesday, it did not disappoint but I was feeling it. I had to opt out of trying any desserts, but that just means I'll have to be back. They have a DJ and/or play music but it's not so loud you can't have intimate conversations or not hear your friends and family. We had been here a few years ago and when we knew we were going to be in town we decided we had to stop back to see if they were still as good as before. They are!!! They have two locations, but this is THE location - the original - the one with the great atmosphere and the one that has the food truck vibe that they started with even though it's a full-blown restaurant. We opted to sit outside because the atmosphere is just great. Our server was Jacob and he was great - appropriately helpful and attentive without being too attentive. Now - I should say that I'm not a street taco fan. In fact, this is the only place I've ever had a street taco that I liked - so that's saying a LOT. We started with the chips and queso which had some type of meat in it with cabbage on top - oh - sooo tasty! They'll bring you as many chips as you need to get every bit of queso! Very good flavor! The charro beans had meat and cheese and were phenomenal - the flavors and textures - I could make a meal of just the beans, but fortunately we didn't do that. We had the taco sampler which has 5 different tacos. I opted to do the 'step up' and made one of mine shrimp. The presentation was top notch. They came with cilantro and sautéed onion slices. Now, you may say 'they're onions - big deal' but those onions had an amazing flavor to them! I put some on my tacos, and I had several forkfuls just like that! The salsas all had really good flavor - each was different but great and each had some heat. I am totally a salsa snob - I admit it. These were on par with the rest of the meal - great! The tacos - an El Rojo Quesadilla; El de Asada Quesidilla; shrimp; El Plebe; and chicken with sautéed pineapple. The corn tortillas were perfect - not too dry and not too moist. Now - I'm not a corn tortilla fan, but these were perfect! Each of the meats was perfectly prepared and flavored. Every bite was a treat. I have never had a shrimp taco stuffed with so many shrimp - seriously! I was skeptical about the chicken and pineapple because, I don't like pineapple on food but I was pleasantly surprised that the flavors really worked! Our dinner was great. Great atmosphere. Great service. Great food. Not too often that all three are found in one place. The only down side - El Plebe is 3 hours from where I live so I can't come back on a regular basis. My sister and I came here for dinner. I tried the taco sampler and it was amazing! It's double layered taco. Some has cheese in between. My favorite was the chicken with pineapples. The onions on the side was a great addition too. They were really filling. I could only finish 4 of the 5. I also had a cucumber lemonade drink which was a great pair with these tacos and so much limes! I love it! We were also given small cups of a type of bean soup and some chips while we wanted for our tacos. Our water was kind and quick. Our table and chair is clean and stable. This place is an absolute vibe! Cutest taco place that has a both inside and outdoor seating. My boyfriend and I enjoyed the outside patio and atmosphere. We went on a Tuesday evening after a baseball game. They had heat warmers and TVs playing basketball, and even had a live DJ! Loved the first 3 that I tried - I think it was their El Plebe Taco, Barbacoa, and Al Pastor. The other 2 were a bit too peppery for me. All the salsas were good. Fair warning, the red creamy one has some fire to it. Service - The servers were attentive. I had one spoke in English and another only in Spanish. They made sure to check on me from time to time. Ambiance - I sat outside right in front of the food truck. It was nice and casual. It's a plus that they have clean restrooms. Location - I'm not from the area but I was in central McAllen and this place seem to be in the general vicinity. Parking was good but I was also there on a weekday. I think I read somewhere it can get pretty packed on a weekend so plan accordingly. Overall good. I went here visiting from San antonio and immediately felt the dirtiness of the place. The cooks kept walking outside taking out trash, etc. using the same gloves they were cooking with and doing other activities (I really hope they changed their gloves after). There are an extraordinary amount of flies outside which I understand, it is outside, but it's an incredibly weird amount. It's hard to enjoy your food. I ordered a quesadilla and unsurprisingly, found a nice black hair in it after eating a good amount of it. I would've taken a picture of the hair but had to stop myself from throwing up. We took her to El Plebe because we felt like it was THE perfect taco place to go to if you've been deprived of 956 Mexican food for a decade. Atmosphere is great, they've added misters for the hot summers, little water fountains, and they keep the stray cats fed which is very sweet. Service is fast and friendly, and they have indoor seating as well. The parking lot is always packed on weekends, especially at night since people like to go for the drinks and live music. I went there as a new customer. The ambiance of the restaurant is really what had gravitated me to go. Since it was really hot we stick to being inside. The ramp to go into the building is a little steep and the platform at the top doesn't leave any room for error as a wheelchair user. To top it off fitting through the door with my wheel chair was very very tight. Asked the workers to open the second door so it would be easier but it is permanently closed. As far as being ADA accessible I wouldn't count on it. The food was really good and filling but they do charge for everything the water is a water bottle so you're paying for refills. First time visiting Tacos el Plebe. Went around noon and at the time found seating quickly. It was hot out so dined indoors. The staff were quick and proceeded to explain some of the menu items. We tried the taco sampler and found the barbacoa taco to be the best. Had the lonche plate as well. I had it with chicken. It was good, but it was a bit messy for me because of the crema. Lol, maybe I'm just a messy eater. Had the cucumber lemonade and that was great. We also really enjoyed the chips with queso that came with the lonche plate. They were really good. Looks like this backyard taqueria is doing well and will likely continue to grow in popularity. Tacos el Plebe is so popular that there are not enough parking spaces in their small lot that many people must find a spot to park on the surrounding streets. Despite the fact that this taqueria is run from a food truck, there is indoor seating with clean restrooms. But most of the seating is out back under an open sky and strings of lanterns with some tables under a shelter. They recently expanded their backyard and laid down some artificial grass to create a cozy, relaxed environment. There is also a screened-in sports bar section out back. When we were there there was a nice band singing 80's songs in English and Spanish at just the right volume so we could still carry on a conversation. Pet-friendly too. And if some flies come around, you can ask for a fly fan to scare them away. Service was a little on the slow side, but that may have had something to do with every table being occupied and the fact that they had to cook a fresh batch of shrimp. I had the taco Sampler Plus. I'm not sure which taco was which, but I think my favorite was El de Asada Quesadilla and I was tickled by the grilled chicken with caramelized pineapple one. And like other people have mentioned, you can upgrade your charro beans with carne asada and mozzarella for a small upcharge. read more
