Excellent food and the roti is the best! I have never been disappointed when I came here!

We were passing by and in town so we stopped by. The doubles were good. Her attitude was horrible.

I was excited to visit this Caribbean restaurant with my son. We ordered 3 doubles a chicken curry and a duck curry. the owner is rude as mentioned in previous reviews, she seemed annoyed and did not want to make fresh roti skins for us, she said she was too busy when we were the only ones there. the grand daughter was easier to deal with but did not know anything so needed to ask her mother which seemed to annoy her even more. I was told that the duck curry was hot, which translates to spicy. The duck curry is so spicy it's inedible, it would have sent me to the hospital. I love spice and grow my own scorpion & habanero peppers, the food they prepared and served was a lawsuit waiting to happen. I asked why they made it so spicy and they said that customers would use up the pepper sauce they had on the tables to add to their food so they decided to just make it spicy. I decided to eat a doubles instead, it was absolutely disgusting, it tasted as if they used chick pea flour to make a curry slurry and it was under cooked. I was pissed that I spent $70 dollars on food that was poorly made and with zero customer service. The bathroom is also a whole other issue. not sure how they are in business. I never leave a negative review but Tara Roti shop should be avoided at all costs. read more

The lack of respect shown to customers at this restaurant is unbelievable. We ordered doubles and were presented only six grains of chana, while the rest was drenched in pepper sauce. I recently was working for Sarah and her aunt Dorean, VERY RUDE AND TALKED TO ME LIKE I WAS CRAP. Remind you before working there I was a regular customer so I thought I would atleast have been treated with RESPECT. When I asked both of them to stop talking to me in rude ways I was told THAT IS WHAT COMES WITH THE JOB. SHES VERY RUDE TO HER CUSTOMERS AND EMPLOYEES THATS WHY EMPLOYEES NEVER LAST THERE AND WHY CUSTOMERS END UP GOING TO TRINI SPICE. Also none of her food is made fresh except the Roti and Pholourie. Everything gets popped in the microwave before she gives her food out NOTHING is cooked fresh. Frozen, days old, popped in the microwave and given back out to the customer. She also doesn't use ANY GLOVES when she is preparing food. Overall my experience here was terrible. From being a customer to an employee this woman is MISERABLE and she and other people use the excuse of her mother passing to be rude to people. That is no way to treat people who support your business no matter who has passed, we all go through things and I'm one to give grace but this lady just straight up doesn't give a S***. read more

Tara is not allowed dine in during pandemic. But the take out is available. The store open to customers who want generous on the quantity portion. I got the the stew Oxtail. This dish come with one side of choices and rice. I have the cabbage as side. The oxtail is stew in high pressure to separate from the bone. Number oxtail given was three big pieces and one small piece. The rice was given generously so you will have full stomach. Great for dinner portions. Overall experience is at average. Food is ok. Definitely is budget place in compare to many restaurants. read more

Not much has changed. Sara is running tings and everything is made to order and takes 20-30 minutes to wait. I've been going here for more than 20 years and my mom was going to Tara's before this was the location. My mom prefers bone IN curry chicken and I prefer the boneless. We also got some black cake by the slice and sorrel which is so good, everything is good. It's a little bit of a small dry good grocery. I picked up some pepper sauce, tamarind balls and curry powder while I was here. There's plenty of parking and don't be alarmed by the plaza, it's older but all is fine. A tip, you can call ahead and place an order to save time picking up. If you paying with card you can't add a tip so bring cash. If you are in the delivery area, food delivery apps pickup and you can done in with a few booth tables. Be prepared, don't be shy or soft spoken or Sara will eat you alive. Also, you order your food first and wait and then pay when your order is ready. Of all the places that have come and gone in Tampa to get roti, this is the only place to go. The food at Tara's remains excellent even after Ms Tara's passing. Her daughter has done an outstanding job to keep giving me the quality of food I've grown accustomed to for over 30 years. However, the quality of the food can't overshadow the rude behavior of her daughter when answering the phone and serving guests. She acts as though she doesn't want to be bothered and isn't enjoying what she does. The common conversation amongst those who have patronized the restaurant for many years is how rude the daughter is to customers. Tara always talked to customers as they ate going from table to table. It was as though you were visiting her house. It was so pleasant to visit and worth the drive from St Pete. If the daughter no longer has the passion for running the business, rather than treat customer rudely, close shop. Love the food, dislike the service. read more

Finally found some yummy doubles! I really love them and used to get them in Queens all the time. I'm so glad I found a place that makes them really well. I also ordered a roti and a curry chicken and they were also really good. My husband ordered a goat dish. This will be my go-to spot when I want a doubles fix. read more

I received word that Miss Tara (the owner of the shop) passed away this morning. I know that everyone in the YELP community that has ever eaten the wonderful food here will miss her. My Mother n law was wanting Roti and had not been to Tara's. I decided to get some to go and it wasn't bad. The lady took my order and the food was out in 10 minutes. Very flavorful and nice and hot. Took one star off for packaging. I wish the roti was in foil or a to go container because it stuck to the paper every time I tried to bite it or use the fork. I think I ate paper a few time. Then, my husband's meal spilled into the bag and leaked in the car. No pictures of my mnl curry goat roti because she ate it right away. read more

Tara's is just right up my alley. It's got that island feeling that you can only get out in the caribbean. Nothing fancy, just fantastic food. The five stars is based solely on that fact and nothing else. Just had the stewed oxtail (buss up shot) and roti, and man!! It was just divine. One of the best comfort meals I've ever had. The fatty gelatin around the oxtail melts in your mouth.. the gravy was just right. The hot sauce is super spicy, a little bit goes a long way. Loved the curry shrimp as well. This is a review for take out. I wanted to try Trini food after seeing a chef on Top Chef make doubles. Thank goodness for Tara's Roti Shop! Very reasonable prices, and food is ready when they say it will be. I tried the doubles and the boneless curry goat with rice and dhal. I also asked for a side of pepper sauce, but they forgot it (I don't think they charged me for it, though, so okay). Service was prompt but not necessarily the most friendly? The food was good, despite the 20 minute drive home and being microwaved for 60 seconds. The roti was an interesting combination of sweet and salty. I really wished I had the pepper sauce to go with it. The curry goat was maybe a little less seasoned (less curry-y) than I'd like. The rice and dhal was a bit mushy, but I liked the heat it brought. The cabbage was good. There's plenty of parking in the mini mall. The setting is basic at best, but for take out, it was fine. read more

Amazing food! I ordered through Uber eats and it was a far drive to me and the food came piping hot. My girlfriend and I loved everything we ordered! I wish I took pictures but I didn't get too. We ordered the curry goat and curry shrimp roti (roti on the side) we also ordered the curry shrimp meal with rice and pees. The tamarind sauce . Don't be deterred by the sketchy exterior and location of this place-the food is totally worth it. I had no idea what to expect, but the restaurant was larger on the inside than I thought it would be, with stools to sit at the counter, and many tables scattered throughout. We chose to sit at the counter, which was so fun because the Owner chatted with us, told us how things were made, and made suggestions. She recommended the juice drink called sorrel to start with, and it was sweet and refreshing - and she makes it herself. Apparently she tried growing the fruit here, and it had no flavor, so she has friends ship it over from Trinidad to make it. She also gave us a sample of the drink, mauby, just so we could taste it. That is NOT for me - hah! I love when I was thinking things over on the menu the Owner would say "you don't want that" or "do you like spicy?" When trying a new-to-me type of food, that's exactly the kind of input I need. I ended up going with the Vegetarian Platter and it was delicious. Mild potato curry, cabbage with saffron, plantains, one doubles, and six little dough balls called phoulorie. I didn't think the phoulorie had much flavor, but everything else was crazy good. Especially the doubles - first time having one and the combo of cucumber, chick peas and seasonings between the fried dough was outstanding. Some of my coworkers and I stopped by here for lunch one day. I ordered the Buss Up Shot with curry chicken, and I thought it was pretty tasty. I've had similar dishes with paratha roti and curry chicken - just not specifically Caribbean/Trini-style so I can't comment too much on the authenticity. However, I will warn you that the hot sauce she'll give you to add to your dish comes in a tiny cup but it's not to be messed with because it packs a punch, and I can handle decent spice for somebody who grew up eating mostly American food. The portion of paratha roti given with the curry chicken blew my mind. I like carbs/bready things so I was able to eat it all, but you will probably have leftovers to take home. It seemed pretty freshly made being hot to the touch and a good texture (as far as roti goes from my experience). The chicken was cooked fairly, could've been a little more tender, but with the curry it was still pretty tasty to eat. The place is very laid back, so if you're in a hurry for the food then maybe plan to come here another time; our food was ready in a decent amount of time, but we got there before other customers ordered so we probably got lucky. If you're expecting the smiles of Chik-fil-A customer service, then I will tell you that you are probably not going to get it because Tara is very straight forward and has a bit of an attitude, but if you can toss it back to her then you'll be fine. read more

"Know your order because I don't write down names." When you place an order over the phone or in person she only knows your order based on the food, so make sure you know what you ordered. We got "buss up shot - curry chicken" and it was fantastic . The food is extra fresh and delicious. The bread looks like nan but it's stretchy and spongy. It's not a fancy spot. It's very self service based. Tara is very to the point about the food and customer service. Her main concern is the food and she's got that all right. I'm definitely going back to try some more Trinidadian food. I'm so excited to explore some more. read more
