This restaurant hides in plain sight. It is located towards the end of the Big Lots shopping plaza with "Island Food" as the name displayed outside the eatery. The middle aged woman behind the counter is not warm and welcoming. However, the food makes up for it. I noticed that they chop the protein up and you end up getting more bones than meat. So annoying. I once asked specifically for less bones and more meat and the young girl dishing out the food honored it. I would recommend their beef Jamaican patties. read more

My husband, who grew up on his mother's cooking, said this is the closest thing he's ever had to her food--which is saying a lot! The brown stew chicken is tender and rich, the soup is hearty and comforting, and the dumplings are just right. I had been meaning to try this place for a while but the hours on yelp are incorrect so they were closed when I tried visiting them before. We went on a Saturday evening and I liked almost everything that we ordered. The jerk chicken, rice and peas, plantains, beef pattie and coco bread were all very good. I wasn't crazy about the curry chicken but that is just a matter of preference (my husband liked it). I will pass on the Mac n cheese next time. The service was very friendly. I only wish they had prices posted someplace. There is no menu board, and the printed menu they give you to order from had the pricing crossed out with a black marker so the prices are not visible. The lady said we can tell her what we want and she will give us a price. That was a little sketchy for me but not a big deal breaker. The restaurant has a basic layout with more of a takeout vibe and a few tables and chairs for seating. I've had the oxtail and jerk chicken meals which were OK. Their chicken soup (on the days that they make it) is very good and so was their red peas soup. My favorite things to get from this restaurant mostly are their homemade drinks. I have to say that I'm very happy to have this Caribbean restaurant so close to home. I've passed by it many times when going to the post office. This time I decided to stop. At first, I thought they were closed. I pulled on the door handle and it didn't open very easily for me. You just have to pull harder to open it because the door sticks for some reason. Maybe I was too gentle. Anyway, the food smelled wonderful upon entering. There are also refrigerated drinks and natural juices to the right along the wall. The juices are priced differently depending on what you get so you may want to make your choice before ordering the food. They had all different kinds of juices. Some are very unique such as Irish Moss and Ginger Beer which both have a combination of various ingredients (all on the label). All the juices are lightly sweetened. I would go back just for the juice alone. It was really wonderful! So far my favorite is the guava pineapple, but the pineapple ginger was really good too. I went ahead and placed a regular size order of the oxtail in brown sauce with rice and peas and cabbage. I noticed like other reviewers that the person taking my order immediately went over to the sink to wash her hands before preparing my meal. I love that! It makes me feel very comfortable. It was ready within 10 minutes of ordering it. Everything I received was hot. It stayed hot for a while. The oxtail was very meaty and tender. The brown sauce wasn't as flavorful as other places, but I was super happy with the portion and side items as well. I went back the next day to try the jerk pork with cabbage and sweet plantains. The pork was so full of flavor. I typically don't like jerk seasoning but this one was really good, and maybe because I also got the Tropical Rhythm Island sauce on top. It added a sweet pepper flavor that really went well with the jerk seasoning. But hey, I do like sweet and savory so try it and decide for yourself. I also wished that I had more of the sweet plantains. These were so sweet and delicious. Just the way they should be. I'll be going back for many more visits. It was very comforting food (even the cabbage). Oh, and that juice really hit the spot. I want to try the tamarind and maybe something with passion fruit next time. I ordered the jerked chicken meal which consisted of the chicken (drumstick and thigh...not big at all) cabbage and Mac n cheese. The Mac n cheese was surprisingly good. This place is a hidden gem! I come here specifically for their salt fish and ackee. It's absolutely delicious and exclusively served only on Saturday mornings. Make sure you get there early because it sells out pretty quick. I suggest calling in your order ahead of time. I've also tried the beef patties here and they were so good and the portions are just so fulfilling. I also enjoy all the natural juices that they make in house. The prices are very reasonable especially for the portions that you're getting. The location is very central for most Brandon/Riverview/Valrico commuters and residents, as it is located on Bloomingdale Ave, situated right next to the Post Office. Customer service is always served with a smile. The owners are friendly and remember your face. The food portions are pretty average. My food has always been fresh (no leftovers). Juices and water are sold. There are various days where a variety of homemade soups are sold. They serve Jamaican breakfasts on Sunday mornings. I recommend go in early because they sell out quickly! I think breakfast starts at 10-1030am. You can call in and reserve an order ahead also. There are vegetarian options and for people who like fish. The food I had was absolutely delicious. I'm actually falling into a food coma as I'm writing this review. Some of the reviews on here are brutal and although they are a bit slow the sweet savory spices will make you forget the world and the problems within it. The people were friendly and genuine with their approach. Do not hesitate to pay them a visit because their prices are also cheaper than other Jamaican restaurants I've been to and trust me when I say this they're 4-5 dollars cheaper. Try to order the food ahead of time, be nice to these people they're working hard to make you food. It doesn't matter if you're paying for leave the jerk to the jerk chicken. Had some spice to it, but not too much to the point where my eyes watered :) I also had the rice&beans and plantains. The rice was okay. Next time I'll order it with oxtail gravy on top, because it was a bit dry. The plantains were also okay. I ordered a regular and the portion size was okay. I dont like the fact that 3 plantains count as a side though. I feel like they should come with the order anyway.
