There is a certain tyranny to a sunny day in Seattle. "Can you believe this weather?" "You should really be doing something outside." When I find myself laboring under that brand of tyranny I get myself into Targy's where I can take off my sunglasses and enjoy a beer out of the glare of judging eyes. According to the yarn being spun by my bartender Pat, Targy's was "one of the first bars in Seattle after prohibition. It was from these illustrious beginnings of being almost first that we find the current Targy's tavern. As you walk into the door you are faced with a decision. Are you ready to saddle up to the horseshoe shaped bar and become one with the bar conversation? If so then proceed and enjoy. It is a great place to drink alone. If not then there are pool tables, darts and a good juke box to keep you occupied. They also have a few tv's (that I lothe) with sports on them if you are into that sort of thing. Please take note that Targy's is a true tavern with only beer and wine. This is a great bar with a lot of original character. Stop by for a pint or 6 Edit: Targy's now offers booze!! I was wrong to judge Targy's. Very wrong.... This place is EXCELLENT. yes this place is full of drunks, yes it was last renovated some time many decades ago, yes there are a couple of random couches- but Targy's is what it is. If I can say one thing about targys it is that it has character. The look and feel of a friends parents baement from the 1970's. An ATM that dosn't acutally dispense money that prints out tickets that you can order stuff from the bar. These are the unique touches that had me smiling. Here is my Targy experience: I helped a friend move in up the street and he tooks us out for a couple pints afterwards. After a lengthy decision at the bar between the 2 beers on tap we go in and sit at a huge booth. Soon after an old hound dog comes up to us and starts howling as if to say I have some prey for you to hunt. The owner(?) comes over and I get ready to bolt thinking a scene from deliverance is next. But it turns out to be a nice older woman who chats us up finishing the converstation with "tsk if I were only 30 years younger." We couldn't stop laughing. Alas if you like a seedy bar with the incessant drone of pull-tab machines this is your bar. read more

We were in from out of town and looking for a low key bar. We found the perfect place here at Targys. This is a divy neighborhood bar, mostly filled with regulars. They have two pool tables, two electronic dart boards, and a small shuffle board table. And they had a decent beer selection with Longboard on tap. read more

Really nice neighborhood spot in west queen anne. One of the last true watering holes in the area which has frankly gotten a little out of hand. Its not super cheap like a typical dive bar but the rent must be through the roof. The delicious $7 Stellas they have on draft once prompted me to rekindle my relationship with my father. read more

I come here roughly once a month when my friends get together for trivia. I enjoy a damn good dive bar and it is that all the way around. Service is friendly and chill. The amazing woman that runs trivia is entertaining and quite great at creating interesting trivia questions that are challenging and fun. You can tell this place has been around for a long time. Targy's used to be the end of the night run for my five roomies and I that lived in a big house on QA. I learned to play pool on a crooked pool table here and would get wasted on cheap beer. Booze wasn't served at the time, and that was ok. You left reeking of smoke and laughing loudly out in the streets, usually pissing off the neighborhood. One night each of us took a street sign (how I don't know) and woke up with them covering the front lawn. Targy's was one of the first divey bars I experienced in Seattle and I loved it. read more

This business has not been here as it is for 80 years. I'm sure there was a bar around here since the 1930's, but it never had a sign before 2007 to my memory and it was a very different place. If there was a bar around here, it wasn't this one. This address has been only occupied by a bar since around the 1970's, but it was a quiet beer bar with no liquor license. The current loud, obnoxious version of Targy's in this space emerged around 2007 with a change in owners. Now it caters to drunks and hipsters who play loud music in their cars outside, peel out, talk loudly, fight, break things in the neighborhood, leave trash...not people you want coming to where you live (I live near here and have for a very long time). Targy's isn't some landmark, it's a former beer bar that's been turned into a very profitable business by a millionaire, and the neighborhood has had to pay the price. I'm sad about what it's become. I kinda blame yelp...this place was cool before yelp. read more

From the outside, Targy's looks like a dive bar. I was surprised it was pretty decent on the inside. Nothing fancy, just a local bar, but clean. Full of crusty local hard drinkers and young Queen Anne soccer Mom's in training. I visited after work for some happy hour action. $3 dollar draft micros and $2 dollar High Life bottles. A very good value in Queen Anne. They are short on food options though. Pizza and vending machine food is all they got. Cheetos after work just did not hit the spot. The bathroom was clean. I really like the volume level in the bar. I could actually hear the person next to me without having the yell. Good service. There was a friendly female bartender and a cool one armed bartender. The second coolest one armed person since Rick Allen of Def Leppard. I think I found a new favorite neighborhood bar! read more

I am a walkable distance from this place and I think it is great! I enjoy the electronic dart board and the computer games. Also beer is inexpensive and they just started serving liquor. It is nice that you can also get a bag of chips if you happen to be hungry. I prefer fritos or cheetos with my beer. read more

I heart Targy's. First off, I love that it is smack dab in the residential heart of Queen Anne. Secondly, the vibe here is just great if you want to drink some cheap beer and chill. Yeah, it's got a couple of T.V.s for the sports fans and an internet jukebox, which seems to be all the rage these days. But it's also got some awesomely bad couches to sit on, a decorative glass tile wall circa 1970(that's kind of falling apart), and a cool circular bar. Targy's wants to have my review removed and all negative reviews for that matter. But this is not realistic and continues to falls in line with the horrid customer service I received there. It took the bar tender 15 min to even come over and take my order while I was sitting at the bar and after saying he will be right over. Also, trashiest place I've ever been to, filled with alcoholics and desperate people. A place like this should NOT be in a family quiet neighborhood! Not a nice atmosphere and everyone that leaves there is so hammered and getting in their car and driving drunk! read more

This little place is a fun little hideout for when you want to have a beer in peace. That is, if you go on a night where there isn't a local sporting event on TV, but nonetheless this place has good beer and a comfortable atmosphere. I didn't expect this tavern to serve spirits, but was surprised to see the creative cocktail menu (Queen Anne Margarita) and a decent selection of beers on draft and in the bottle. The place has pool tables, a jukebox and even hosts trivia during the week (get there early to get a table - the place gets busy on those nights). You'll have to park on the street so be aware of the "no parking" areas and/or the limited parking areas (before/after 6pm, etc). I didn't eat here, but did see someone order a pizza that was cooked in a convection oven and I saw others bring in food of their own. read more

I thank my lucky stars Targy's is my neighborhood tavern. It serves excellent mixed drinks, with the best margaritas and gin gimlets in town. There is no better place to end the night, with its $2 beer of the day specials. The crowd is always welcoming, with the regulars and a generally fun crowd - sometimes you can trade the bartender for beer nuts, an older gentleman may hand you a Klondike bar, or you can just chill outside with whatever dog is tied up to the post. Welp. This WAS our favorite neighborhood spot. We always went to Targy's after a long day at work, to unwind after a long road trip, or with our co-ed softball team after our games. On this particular day we were just getting home from an extended weekend and eight hours on the road, so we wanted to go somewhere chill and near home. Targy's has trivia at 8pm on Wednesdays so I jumped out of the car to poke my head in and see if they were busy. They weren't busy at all, so I waved at my husband to park and went inside. A couple steps inside the door and the bartender asked me for my ID from behind the bar. I told her that my husband had my ID on him and that he was just parking and would be right in. As I take another step towards a barstool to sit down, she again asks me for my ID. Thinking she didn't hear or understand me the first time because someone had been talking to her as I walked in, I repeated that my ID was in my husband's wallet and he's on his way in from parking (Note: parking at Targy's is super easy street parking right in front of the bar). She then snapped back with "the liquor board doesn't really care if your husband is parking his car." At this point I'm super confused and caught off guard so I say, "I'm not trying to sneak in or anything, I'm 36 years old and he's 30 seconds from walking in with my ID..." She then motioned for me to leave. I went outside pretty much in shock and told my husband we needed to go somewhere else. In 15+ years of going out more nights than not, I can honestly say this is the most bizarre - and only negative - exchange that I've ever had with a staff member at a bar or restaurant of any kind. Maybe this chick was just having a really bad day? Maybe she thought I was someone else that they previously had a problem with? My husband (get this - a former bartender) and I couldn't think of anything else that made sense. Turns out, neither could the bartender, two servers, or eight other locals we shared the story with at the nearby bar we went to instead. Although we won't be returning to Targy's anytime soon - especially if she's bartending - I would like to give the bartender my sincere thanks for the fodder that led to an extremely hilarious, entertaining guessing game of "why would she do that?" with the staff and patrons at the alternative location. It turned out being a very fun night and we even made a few new friends in the neighborhood! read more

Let's be real honest here - this place is as divey as a dive could be. Only 7 or so beers on tap, of which only 2-3 aren't your standard generic lagers (Bud, Pabst, Rainier), no real food and run-down furniture. But the beer is cheap, the bartender Jason is awesome (and cute) and the people are, well, always interesting. Great little neighborhood dive. Would hate to see it go away. read more

I've driven, jogged or biked by Targy's almost every day for a year. I wasted that year, because it wasn't until last week that I went inside for the first time and found my new favorite place. From outside it seems divey, pretty dead but for the occasional group of smokers milling around the entrance. Inside though, it's the most happening place, still divey, but with two pool tables and darts (though I have no idea how that maching worked) and bathrooms cleaner than most dive bars, it was excellent. The bar tenders were especially nice too. Targy's really doesn't feel like anything else on Upper Queen Anne and it's a comforting place to hang out and meet new people. I can't wait until the football season starts, because I have a feeling I'll be there every Sunday. read more

Love Targy's! This is a dive bar in the best sense of the term. Not pretentious, very, very friendly bartenders and staff, and all sorts of people. Cleaner than you'd think and beers are cheap! You can come in here by yourself and not feel awkward; it's got a very low-key, friendly, open vibe. What I might love most is how it looks completely out of place on the top of classy, suburban, residential Queen Anne; Queen Anne needs a place like this ! I do wish they hadn't started serving hard liquor; in my mind, that contributes to a certain "clubby element" that I'm not too fond of; I liked that before, it was truly a tavern, just beer and wine. On 6/27/17, Todd G. starts off his review of Targy's Tavern by stating, "This is not a neighborhood bar." Credibility. Lost. First sentence. I wonder what constitutes a neighborhood bar? Rumor has it that Targy's opened shortly after the end of Prohibition right across the street from its current location. That would put it at est. approx. 87 years ago. Now, I don't know if that's true or not. I do not know EXACTLY when Targy's opened, but I know for a fact that it has been there in its current location since AT LEAST the early 1960's. If not earlier. So it's been there at least going on 60 years if not longer. There are many 2nd and 3rd generation Targy's patrons whose parents and grandparents played pool and put plenty of wear and tear on the horseshoe bar. People have played on Targy's softball teams, bowling teams, have had going away parties, welcome home parties, birthday parties, met long lost friends in there, you name it. There are Queen Anne natives that still go in there, others, while perhaps not natives, long time patrons. To say it's not a neighborhood bar because you have a specific bias against it is uninformed. Oh and the 2nd and 3rd gen native and non-native long-timers..... we also work 9-5 jobs, have kids, and well, I guess not so big of a mortgage because we've been here for awhile. You and your "great big mortgage" - I guess makes you feel entitled to think that it's your neighborhood to cultivate as you see fit, make generalities and stereotypes of the type of patron at Targy's and the like e.g. "the Targy's drunks." I could say that the fact that many people have been around far longer than you gives us more entitlement over you. But that wouldn't be true -- everyone is welcome. However, all your "great big mortgage" says is that you bought fairly recently. That doesn't entitle you to anything. And while sure, you may have found a few allies in your narrow-minded snobbery, but to say, "none of us like Targy's very much" sounds really, really whiny and immature. By the way, we say, we live on Queen Anne around here. Not, "we live in Queen Anne." A little tip for ya to help you fit in better. Targy's sponsors a little league baseball team, has had school fundraisers, fundraisers for children with leukemia, and other community related functions that I may not recall. While Targy's is certainly no frills and old school, it's clean, well run, well staffed, drug free, fun and friendly. It is not a nightclub with violence problems nor do they have live music. Targy's staff frequently reminds people to be quiet when they leave or when they're outside having a smoke. It is enforced. Of course, I'm sure you do hear some drunk idiots every now and again. It is a bar that serves (shocker here) spirits. How can they control what every single person does when they come and go from the establishment? They can't. No business can. But believe me, they do put forth an honest effort. And what's the deal with giving a one-star review to an establishment on Yelp, not based on service, pool tables, the amount of TVs, the drink ordered while at the establishment. But because of a personal bias. I'm sure Targy's doesn't really care too much about their Yelp rating, people that know the place love it anyway. But that's just kind of snobby. I mean, it seems like your'e probably one of the "concerned neighbors" who keeps contacting the City of Seattle with noise complaints. Again, how uptight can one be? You knew the bar was there when you purchased your home. Had been there since before you were born. Does that mean you should have to put up with unruly behavior? Of course not! But as stated before, the place is well run, some nights it's not very crowded, other times it is. I don't think the staff can be held responsible for what people do when they leave, only what they do inside and immediately outside. And from what I've seen, I think the owner and the staff have been VERY responsive and sensitive to any complaint received by a small but vocal few neighbors. I have even witnessed patrons self-police other patrons telling them to pipe down outside. You cannot fault the business for someone being loud as they come or go every once in awhile. That's just not reasonable. As a policy, from what I've witnessed, it is not tolerated, but sure, there's always going to be a bad apple from time to time. No, I am not affiliated with Targy's in any way other than as an off and on patron over the years. Targy's is a good place to get a cold beer, well made drink, shoot some pool, play some darts, watch a game, see some old friends, see some newer friends, have some laughs. But alas, despite all that, maybe it should be closed down so that Todd G's "nightmare" for he and his family can come to an end. Perhaps a small cafe focusing on locally sourced, eco-friendly, sustainable, boutique roasts flown in by a Unicorn from remote jungles in S. America is what Queen Anne needs. No more of this low-brow stuff. read more

I would give it 5 stars if it had managed to retain a bit more of its dive-iness. But it still definitely is a great place to enjoy a cold beer away from the yuppiness of Queen Anne. I've been a Targy's customer for 15+ years; joining local friends there for a beer. Recently, my girlfriend and I stopped in and bought two beers apiece. We saw that the bartender was getting ready to leave, so we asked to cash out so we could give her the tip. When the bill was higher than expected, I asked about it, The bartender said it was right, and that she had work to do. I asked for a detail of the purchase; she walked away. When I pushed the issue, she printed one out. She told me one price; the incoming bartender said the beer is a different price. One said that the tax was not embedded; the other said that the higher price /tax appeared on the bill because "the beer had to come by ship from far away.."! While we were talking about this, our bartender took my receipt detail, crumpled it, and said to leave her alone so she could go home. The management responded quickly to my question about this. They wrote that the beer is $7.00, tax embedded. My bill did not match that fact; I pointed that out in a reply to the management - no response yet. The old place is good; better pay cash as you go... they didn't show consistency in price or policy. That issue needs to be fixed; the liquor control board would not tolerate this. Do ask for a breakdown of what you buy. read more

I love a good dive bar as much as anyone, but Targy's just didn't do it for me. The bartender's were slow, ripped me off on a shot (come on i know that was all juice and no vodka), and were generally rude. If you are in the mood to get groped by random strangers hanging around the dart machine, then this may be the place for you. read more

This place was horrible!!! My friend and I walked in and sat at the bar like any normal people. The bartenders didn't even look at us. We were ignored for about 8 minutes. Finally my friend asked for a drink. The girl looked at him like he was speaking alien!!! We ordered drinks and finished them and were ready to leave. We had to ask for our tab 3 times. This was the most unfriendly place I have EVER been. Will never go back, even if it was the last place to buy a drink. I'd rather chop my arm off. Good luck!! read more
