If I could give six stars I would....Sammy in the paint department gave me the best crash course in paint finishes and complete confidence to move forward with my re-painting. He really listened to the needs of our project, gave useful advice and helped us work within our minimal budget. Having just moved to this neighborhood it is a great feeling to have a local business to come to, in person, and ask questions. I could not recommend this hardware store more. Makes me look forward to more renovation projects big and small. read more

People like Joel are the reason why you should spend the extra money to buy what you need from a place like Tarzian, as opposed to one of the horrible stores like Home Depot, Lowe's or (gasp) Wallmart. It's the service that makes the difference. It's the service that you pay extra for when you shop at a place like Tarzian. And it's worth it. I walked into the store not knowing what I needed, much less where I could find it. Joel greeted me as soon as I walked in, I told him what I was trying to accomplish, and he was able to custom-engineer a solution for me which involved two plumbing couplers, a washing machine hose, and a garden sprinkler. He did this on the spot, directed me to each item and explained how I should use them all to do what I wanted to do. MacGyver himself couldn't have done a better job. This is such a frustrating place. They have people standing around all over, if you ask for something they will not move but will point in some vague direction. If you live in Park Slope and need just about anything, this place will have it. The staff is really helpful and I would say the stuff is not that overpriced. I bought a hand drill, drill bit set and some wall screws all for under 20 dollars. The place is a maze but the staff are really helpful and they have pretty much anything you could imagine you could get at a hardware store. I'd much rather go here to a local shop than to Target. I will be returning soon for my next apartment project. read more

Generally great service (though you might find one or two guys who only reluctantly help you). Excellent paints and good advice from the staff. The store also carries a lot of things that are pretty difficult to find anywhere else (without making the trek to Home Depot), like a huge variety of contact paper, bathroom hardware, easy to find screws, nuts, bolts, etc. in well-labeled drawers, telephone hardware, mailboxes, gardening supplies, cleaning stuff that's hard to find in the supermarkets, etc. Definitely the best place to go if you live anywhere in the Prospect Heights / Park Slope / South Slope / Windsor Terrace area (and possibly even if you're further away)! read more

Moving into a new place is always vexed with many decisions, one of which was made easier by Tarzian. I decided to paint two of the rooms in my new place, but don't know my eggshell from my gloss. I walked in with my color chips and cased the joint. No one bothered me as I roamed around the store seeing what else I needed (but really just getting the nerve up to ask MANY questions). When I finally asked for help, I was pleasantly surprised - not only at the friendliness of the employees but the knowledge and time he was willing to spend explaining the pros and cons of different paints. I read other reviews and there is definitely truth to the upselling, but you know what? You know your shit and are willing to answer all my questions intelligently? Argh, avoid if you can. Went there for paint twice this week. Was helped by a guy who clearly did not want to work, and who made me feel that helping me out was really a big favor on his part. (At one point I even saw him roll his eyes to another sales person, after I asked if exterior paint would be a better idea for my furniture project). The second time he was by was himself now ( guy with middle brown semi long hair) and just rude. He was 'helping out' in an such an unfriendly and condescending way, that I decided to go to the other paint store on 5th and 7th instead. And the people working here have helped talk me through so many DIY projects. They're always knowledgeable, patient, and just generally nice people. The store occasionally charges more than list price. And if they suspect you are a minority, they won't accept your credit card without two forms of photo identification. A further caution: the store has a strict no-refund policy. If an item is defective, the best you can hope for is a store credit. read more

I've gone here several times. Kind of a classic hardware store--a surprisingly large inventory for such a small space, and consistently friendly, knowledgeable guys to help you find what you need and offer tips. Some of the prices are probably higher than a place like Lowe's, but what you're paying for is the convenience of a nearby location and quality service. read more

Tarzian is a very solid, go-to hardware store in an area that increasingly caters to a crowd that spends $50 per hour on dog walkers. That said, I'm still inclined to say it's overpriced, but it's also Park Slope. They're charging what the market will bear, and a tenement in that neighborhood will go for $2500 per month. Staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. To their credit, when I posted a critical review previously, they responded. You are almost certain to find what you will need for any modest job around the home and even many things needed for more complicated stuff. I went in to ask about an ice cream maker I had seen on Amazon.com. Tarzian had the exact one I wanted but it was priced considerably higher than the same one on Amazon. After showing the salesperson the item and price on Amazon.com she offered to match the price, rather than lose a customer. Great neighborhood hardware store which carries most of the stuff you'll need. The service is very friendly as well.

Not helpful when the guys are resigned to not help. I have a wall easel that didn't come with the wall screw for mounting. None of the screws would slide through the keyhole fastener in the back of the easel. I asked the hardware store guy if there is an alternative solution. The first guy didn't understand how the screw doesn't slide through the groove of the keyhole fastener. The second guy understood it, but also doesn't have a solution with their selection. The third (south Asian) guy gave the same bad idea of replacing the two hole fastener that came with the original wall easel with their two hole fastener, but the new fastener screws are double the length of the original fastener screws and that means the screws would go though the entire easel. I explained that and he rudely walked away in the middle of the conversation. You cannot get more customer unfriendly than walking away in the middle of a sentence. Also, the store was almost empty and these workers were just socializing on the side so there's no reason for the abrasive encounter just because you don't have a wide selection. I only live a block away, but will not be returning to this hardware store. read more

I went in to Tarzian's this past Saturday in a funk. I had just melted the plastic handle of a teapot, that I should not have put on the stove top, into my friend's Viking stove. By the way, I am a guest here, from CA. Anyhow, all things changed because I was helped by Kevin. He was so knowledgeable, helpful and encouraging. I left the store supplied with just a $5.00 bottle of adhesive remover, advice about using heat to remove the plastic and most importantly confidence! I used all the techniques Kevin had suggested and in a few hours the burner and all of its affected parts were clean and functioning. The people are helpful and friendly (I assume this means that the employees are treated fairly and with respect by the owners) regardless of the size of the purchase. I just bought 2 washers for the grand total of 94 cents, facilitated by the attentive help of a staffer.
