I love bookstores and can easily get lost in them. (Sometimes i don't want to be found and go there so I can't find me, nor can the other people bothering me.) This bookstore is unique in its architecture, lighting, music, and of course books. The staff that work there don't view it as only a "job"...it is a passion. You could easily see it in them and they are hyperaware (a great thing) of where books are and when the books are arriving. Though it is a small 'chain', it runs itself like a unique, one of a kind store. The lighting is subtly dim, which is perfect for the atmosphere that it appears to exude. While you might say that you can't read with the dimness, I tell you BUY the book and bring it home for that. This is a place to just enjoy the atmosphere and inundate yourself with literary possibility! The content is one of a kind and, mostly, cannot be found at Barnes and Noble, adding to the sui generis nature of this store. One of the best art book store in town. I've been a customer for ten plus years and Taschen has not disappoint. Taschen also has another location at the Farmer's Martket at Fairfax and 3rd. Please keep in mind that this is a book publisher's book store. Nothing wrong with that, just keep in mind they only sell books published by Taschen. If you're ok with this, then you will have a pleasant experience. Regardless, Taschen is one of the best art book publisher in the world. Their books are gorgeously printed with the best paper selection and lithographic press reproduction quality and technology. Taschen publishes some of the most exclusive titles and most comprehensive artists body of work from standard book sizing to gigantic XL, XXL or SUMO book sizes and the presentation is nothing less than astounding. Taschen also offers exclusive limited edition releases that are some of the best art books ever published and they are worth the money, if you're a collector of rare first edition and signed art books. You will love their offerings. I came here for a book sale and got some great stuff for 50% off. There's just something about the tactile nature of books that can not be replaced. This is not a library or Barne's and Noble, so if you're looking for books to read you will be disappointed. If you love flipping through the colorful pages of photography, architecture, and design books, this is the place. This review is to thank LUCY for turning an already amazing store visit into an incredible and unforgettable one. I visited the store with a friend from London and upon walking into the store we weren't greeted by any of the workers who were sitting and standing around a work counter in the back. Perhaps they were deeply engaged with their work. Perhaps not. However we were so enamored with the books that we dismissed our disdain of the fact that we weren't greeted by any of the people working at this lovely bookstore in the heart of Beverly Hills. I guess we were there for the books anyway. We continued happily admiring the spectacular collection of books with awe. If you visit this book store you will truly find yourself stunned with the variety, style, and presentation of literature. Truly magnificent. The staff, perhaps otherwise... Except for Lucy. Upon telling Lucy it was our first time visiting she proceeded to give us an extensive explanation of the store. Her knowledge of the books, Benedikt Taschen, and even current inventory work (they had a book signed by the Dali Lama arrive that day) was truly remarkable. She was not only supremely knowledgeable about the bookstore but also extremely personable. She was so pleasant to chat with and left a sincere and lasting impression on my friend and I. If you are visiting this store from the first time, especially if you are from London, I hope you can experience Lucy ... or at least a proper greeting. This is too beautiful, notable, and unique of a bookstore for subpar customer service to overshadow a potentially wonderful experience that could be had... If you love photography you will love this place. I love the vibe and the decoration of this place. Luxury and exclusive. You can find all fashion photographers' books and fine art photographers' books here. I spent hours looking through pages of their books. The second floor they have gallery and a balcony. Also they have many special edition books. If you enjoy spending time in pretty places this should definitely be one of those places. I'd visit again when I am in Beverly Hills. If you're in the market for beautiful coffee table books with (mostly) tasteful subject matter, it's hard to go wrong with Taschen. Service at this location, however, is sorely lacking. Blonde store attendant never once looked up to greet or even make eye contact with any customer in the store. When I asked her to perform a price-check on an item, she impatiently glanced at it and told me a price. I went home to check whether the dimensions of the book will work, then went back to the store because the price she told me was much lower than Amazon's. But it turns out that she told me the price of a much cheaper book, wasting my trip to the store because she was too lazy to look it up. read more

The Big Penis Book (1) is located in three separate locations in this store. I walked in because I'm a big Taschen fan--they have great books on architecture and art--absolutely one of the best publishing houses for this kind of stuff. They also have a tasty collection of softcore porn--oops, I mean "art photography" that is fun to thumb through at times. And they have the BIG PENIS BOOK (2) in three different locations in the store. I wandered around, looking at the large, oversize art books with some really unique bindings and book covers. I went to the back of the store and took some stairs that led to a hidden room in the back that I'm not quite sure what you do--but there was an oversize Helmut Newton book (thing was seriously 3' x 4' and about 6" deep. Had to weigh 50 pounds). I came back downstairs and discovered the third (3) BIG PENIS BOOK in the back of the store. THank you Taschen! read more

Beautiful. Wonderful. Dreamy books. On such amazing, esoteric subjects. Artists covered from Man Ray to Steve McQueen. Giant coffee table books about 50s California Architecture. Gorgeous David LaChapelle photography of stars and prostitutes. To me this place was like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and I was Augustus Gloop. I just had to touch everything. I actually came in here with my folks, and my 72 year old dad and 63 year old mom found it all even more interesting than I did. My mom looked through vintage Valentino photos while my dad thumbed through books about Gaudi and Dennis Hopper. This place is an oasis of interesting stuff in a small desert of cool. It's all been cherry picked and certified by Taschen as worthy of your time. Take an hour and enjoy it. The staff ignored me. That was fine. I ignored them back and let them be indy and talk to each other about ironing their hair or whatever. I just wanted some one on one time with all those gorgeous books. A cool small boutique museum featuring limited photo prints of upcoming books from the Taschen line of amazing but understandably expensive art books. This month they had the works of Mick Rock on David Bowie as well as set photos from The Revenant. And in the back a few erotica photos and paintings from various artists. Since Bowie just passed, I had to stop as I was driving by and go in. The prints range from 2500 to 8500. The books from 20 dollars to well over 100. And if the signed copies are even for sale, I'm sure those cost a few thousand. The small staff are friendly and nice. They have a bunch of their books in the center of the gallery for sale. Take a look. You'll see just how cool their books are. Gallery admission is free, parking in back, and plenty of metered street parking. read more

1st Taschen is arguably the greatest book publisher printing today. Yes there is Phaidon (too broad) and Rizzoli (good but not Taschen). I shop both the Beverly Hills location and the Grove. The Grove shop is a sweet lil haven that's a great respite from all of humanity there to ride the trolley and eat at the Farm. But the real star is the Beverly Hills store. Instantly after walking in from the glaring brightness of Beverly Dr you are transported to faraway lands of glamor, fashion, art, travel, architecture. The store is dark, moody, dare I say sexy. The books face out along the walls like works of art or fabulous jewels that twinkle, beckoning to be touched and savored. You can't go in the store without spending an hour or two looking at the best the world has to offer. And once you make your purchase how proud are you to carry the pop art, colorful Taschen bag? I can't get enough of Taschen books. Call me a collector. And if you are ever looking for the perfect gift look no further. A gift from Taschen immediately communicates style & class. As a person who shops for a living, whenever I am in BH I must visit Taschen. I've been a fan of their art books for a long time, so when in the area I went to see the company store. Nice to have a catalog where you can browse the books; particularly with Taschen's wide range of sizes and formats as well as take advantage of special in-store pricing discounts. Another bonus: you can browse the more anatomically-focused titles without drawing the disapproving glares of passers-by. The dark-wood high shelves gives an art gallery feel, which is clearly intentional since the back of the store is a gallery for the limited-edition pictures. It's not obvious, but you're free to wander upstairs to see more of the display. The clerk mentioned they'd be knocking a wall or two out to help facilitate more traffic to the back of the store; for now it can be your secret. read more

Taschen is one of my favorite book publishers. I drove all the way from Orange County just to see this store. I love the massive books they have on display. I like this store because artists need books, esp. Taschen books! I went here to buy a few books about Egyptian art and Fashion. But I also love their books on Graphic Design. Most of Taschen's books are just contemporary and cool with excellent photography. An excellent selection of SEX books are here. I love the Butt Book. It's hilarious. The books are priced well, and they have lots in stock. Almost better than Amazon. read more

My bf was showing me around the LA area and decided to walk around Rodeo Dr. After feeling like crap because of all the high-end stuff, we came upon Taschen to browse around. Here I knew I wouldn't be looked at and judged based on what I was wearing and my handbag. We weren't planning on purchasing anything but came across this beautiful fish calendar. I thought I was going to see Richard Meier and maybe hear him talk, but that was the New York store. I did ask the staff about it and they didn't look at me like I was insane. I crave this store.. I need photo books and this store has what I need.. Taschen sells the cream of the crop of photo books and I wet my pants whenever I am in there.. They are pricey books, but I am a photo nerd and I need to get a book a month otherwise I got into shock.. I had never been to the Taschen store until yesterday. How did I not know about this place? Wow! OK...An art/architectural book store in Beverly Hills. And yet, get this, their prices were REASONABLE. I purchased an enormous, full-color, architectural book for $30. Try doing that at Hennessey + Ingalls. I found their staff to be among the most helpful and engaging group of people I've had the pleasure of meeting in a long time. Very refreshing. And so many books I *must* buy now. Well, at Taschen Beverly Hills, they make you forget that you were ever afraid to go into a store! Inga and Bernard are so nice and friendly (not to mention fashionable)! It kind of just makes you want to buy as many books as you can and keep coming back for more! And don't forget that Taschen has amazing events for their special books. While you might not be able to afford the special editions, you can still go to the events and wait for the regular edition to hit the shelves. The manager Nick is also wonderful. This bookstore is an LA gem - I absolutely love it. Their unique selection of books are beautiful and priced so that the proletariat enjoy some of the nicer things. Besides the amazing, diverse assortment of books based in art, cinema, fancy cock shots, and pop culture, my salesperson, Charlotte, was a delight. She was insightful on almost every piece I brought to her attention, and - based on my extremely niche interests - introduced me to an interesting infographics book that I haven't been able to put down. This store is definitely a destination spot for me. It's one of only three spot's in Beverly Hills that appeal to me, the 2 other being Ace Gallery and Gagausian Gallery. Normally I get an uncontrollable migraine when I have to go to Beverly Hills for any reason, when I'm enroute to the the Taschen store however this quickly subsides. The store has a sale on their display copies twice a year in June and December, with books being anywhere between 25% to 75% off. If you decide to go to one of these sales try to get there for the first day because everything is pretty picked over after that. If you know what you're looking for you score some definite gems during this sale. They have a huge selection ranging from photo books my favorite of course, to Art, Architecture, Design, Travel and Fashion. Browsing here can be dangerous if you're an Art and Photo geek because you can spend a bit of time here and become a lot lighter in the wallet as well. The design and layout of the store is absolutely beautiful, and they often have original prints by photographers such as William Eggleston up toward the back of the store. I would highly recommend this visual oasis if you're looking for something different while in Beverly Hills. read more

Taschen is one of my all time favorite publishers. I drive up and down Beverly Drive all the time yet I never noticed this place until one day. I got very excited and when I had more time went in to explore. Very dark, moody interior that I loved. A perfect backdrop for the vivid, stunning books. So why only two stars? Because I have NEVER come across such rude, uninterested, unhelpful sales people in my life. They totally ignored my when I walked in and all three clerks continued their very important personal discussion near the register. Okay, I can deal with that. I looked around and when I needed help locating a particular book I approached them and they continued to talk even though I was standing right there and obviously had a question. Finally after waiting a fair amount of time I said "Excuse me, I was wondering if you had a copy of this book....." All three of them starred at me like I was a bug that had just crawled out from under a platter of neatly trimmed cucumber sandwiches. The icing on the cake was when all three of them continued to look at me after my question and then just turned back to talking to one another, not answering me, not even ACKNOWLEDGING the fact that I was standing there! I'm getting angry all over again just thinking about it. I suppose if you go in and just want to look then have at it, the books really are awesome - just ignore the staff.
