This updated review is still mostly based on the buffet. I've been to the buffet a handful of times, and gotten dinner service once. It's not bad food, and some of the items are great, but particularly on my most recent buffet trip, I felt like the curries were the most Midwesterenized take on Indian food you can get, like they've had the pizazz sucked out of them. Out of all the curries on the Sunday buffet, the only ones that really satisfied my craving were the malai soya chaap (this one was great, with big, tender pieces of chaap and a rich gravy) and the saag paneer (theirs is not like any other version of the dish that I've had, but I've come to like it for what it is). The rest of the curries (and this goes for other visits too) were just very stewlike, and the gravy on the shahi paneer was the thinnest I've ever seen. Aside from the underwhelming curries, the other buffet food was fine, but nothing else stood out. I've only tried the saag choley and chai a la carte. Again, the saag dish had kind of an nontraditional texture, but it was good. I ordered spicy and got way more flavour than you get out of any of the buffet dishes. Someone in my group ordered the chili cheese naan, and I didn't have any, but it looked delicious and he said it was great. The a la carte chai was also slightly better than the buffet chai, a little richer. The buffet chai didn't do much for me, but I'd get the a la carte chai again. The pros of the buffet are that you get to try a large variety of comforting dishes for a very good price: $15 with card or $14 with cash. It's very vegetarian-friendly with a wide variety of veg dishes. If possible, go for the Sunday buffet, which is the same price but includes a slightly expanded food selection and drinks (mango lassi and chai). The waiters are polite and keep the buffet stocked. The cons are that it can be very crowded inside (but the patio is more comfortable when weather allows) and the Midwesternness of it. But if you have unadventurous eaters, it might work for them. The place is very popular so evidently it's working for someone. Dinner service is a little better but I still don't think this is the place for very authentic Indian. read more

It's still the best Indian cuisine in Bloomington. Took friends this evening; great food. Oddly, service was yawning at best, and it wasn't crowded. We've also noticed that the carryout portions are larger than the dining portions, all the way around (naan is the same size). Met my parents at Taste of India for a Saturday afternoon birthday lunch and this place was packed! It's a small space and they do have patio seating but it was a chilly, rainy March day in Indiana so not really patio weather, which forced everyone inside. The buffet was out, so we all chose that option. $14 if paying with cash or $15 if paying by credit card - a great price for a buffet. There were lots of options. Everything from your standard India dishes (chicken tiki masala, biryani) to some specialties. Included with the meal was mango lassi and chai, although the chai wasn't my favorite. There is also naan on the buffet and a variety of desserts. I really enjoyed my meal! The sauces were rich and flavorful, the naan was perfect for dipping, and the samosas were a great starter. The mango lassi was especially good and super filling--almost like a dessert. The biggest downside was the service. It was pretty slow and not very attentive. We had to wait a bit to get our check and didn't get checked on very often through the meal. This is easily the best Indian restaurant in Bloomington and their lunch buffet is incredible. It's also only $13.99 and includes all of the food, mango lassies, desserts, and water. Every dish is flavorful and i almost couldn't stop eating. The employees provide quick service and are very friendly. They're happy to answer any questions. The location is a little small, especially when the weather doesn't permit using the tables outside, but they do a good job getting tables in and out. Very good lunch buffet. The vegetable fritters (pakora?) were the best that I've ever had. Everything else was good too. The chana masala could have been a little thicker, but that's a nitpick. The staff was nice. It was very clean for a buffet. It's a nice restaurant. The tables are really crammed together, which is annoying. You have to constantly maneuver around tables and people to get to the buffet, bathroom, etc. The staff doesn't check on the customers because there isn't enough walking space for customers to walk to the buffet and for the staff to check on the customers. Therefore, I had to ask someone to bring me a soda refill. When I arrived for a Friday lunch, it was packed so you feel like you have to finish your meal ASAP so the next customer can grab your table. Amazing Dinner!!! We decided to try Taste of India as it was close to our hotel. The restaurant was clean and had a nice atmosphere, but we decided to eat out on the patio because it was lovely evening. You can request your spice level when ordering, so I ordered the Chicken Tikka in mild and my husband ordered the Tandoori Chicken in medium. We also ordered the buttered naan. Each meal came with rice and curry sauce. My husband likes a nice heat to his food, but felt the medium was a little spicy and wished he had gotten the mild. Despite that, the food was absolutely amazing! The rice was perfectly cooked and the curry sauce was the best I have ever had. Normally, I would not eat all the onions that came with a meal, but everything together was so delicious that I did. Each meal was around $16 and we had plenty to eat and even boxed up leftovers. Some family friends recommended this place, raving particularly about the Lunch buffet. Maybe next time. The main location was closed for renovation, but parking there was still free, and a restaurant employee led us to the alternate location just a few steps away. IU is out of session for the year, but there was still a good number of locals out and about. And by the time our dinner was over, the restaurant was almost full. CONS 1. Once seated, service was slow throughout. That included the time to take our orders, how long it took for our choices to be delivered, and having to go up the counter to obtain "to go" containers and our check. 2. Our table was near another with a group of friends, of which one woman's voice cut through everything. Their politics-laced banter was direct and detailed, and not something we'd want to hear over dinner. PROS 1. Parking - See above. 2. Despite our noisy and irritating table neighbors, this substitute space (an old house) was a nice and comfortable place to have dinner. The room was pleasant and with good light due to the front window. 3. Despite the slow service (see above), we found Taste of India staff to be friendly and helpful once we tracked them down. 3. Our menu choices were excellent and with enough for a Saturday night dinner back at the Hotel. This place appeared not to serve alcohol, and my Plan B (Mango Lassi) was a sweet and tasty counter point to the spiciness of my main choice (Chicken Curry). I love this place. I love getting to go butter chicken with garlic naan. They also have an amazing lunch buffet that is very affordable and the food is always fresh and hot. Their buffet has a lot of variety and the employees do a really good job of keeping it stocked. As for the food, the chicken is always dry and everything is just, well, average. We went at lunch time on a Monday and they had a buffet. Usually I am hesitant on buffets being celiac but one of their waitresses/cooks walked through the line with me informing me what I could eat. The gluten containing items were very few and at the end of the line so I felt safe eating the other items. I got a few of the dishes including Chicken Tikka Masala, Chana Masala, and Basmati rice. The wait staff were quick to refill our waters and clear our plates in between filling them up. If you feel safer eating of the menu that is also an option during the lunch hour. Taste of India prepares authentic southern Indian food and delivers it with some of the best service I've experienced in many years. After driving five hours from Illinois, my son and I were starving and unable to find a restaurant to serve us. Though we came in 15 minutes after closing, they allowed us to dine in even though everyone was clearly tired and deservedly wanted to go home. Still, they treated us like we were their most important customer. The sambar soup was outstanding, as were the Tandoori chicken and chicken vindaloo.
