Pic of all the bland food they offer.

Very bland food. Had dumplings, the Tibetan stew, chicken and beef satay and mango lassie. Dumplings were okay, not a lot of filling but the rest was so underwhelming and sparse that we called the restaurant to talk to them. Their response was "chef tried his best". The bill was over $100 so we were just hoping for an adjustment for the bill. I work in restaurants and I hate when people don't give us a chance to fix things. The satay was SAD. It was obviously random chicken breasts sliced and no marination or flavor. The beef was gray and looked boiled. I don't think there was a bit of salt anywhere in any dish. The mango lassi was watery and thin. Seems like they're cutting corners everywhere. When I picked up the food they didn't have a drink carrier or a box for me to carry 2 bags and 3 styrofoam cups out with. So, in review, if you like food that tastes like water (literally) and underwhelming, this is your place. If you expect flavor and precision, professionalism and a great experience, go elsewhere. Sorry guys, we gave you a chance to fix it but now everyone needs to hear about it!

Servers were really kind and helpful. I had never had Tibetan food before so I was excited to try it. I had the Kham Amdo Thukpa which to me tasted like bland chicken noodle soup - needed salt and more spice. The salad dressing was amazing and the lentil soup pretty good as well. The Tibetan tea was unique because it had buttermilk in it. The dumpling platter was overall pretty good but the filling could use some salt and more spices. They are all significantly better when dipped in soy sauce. I would definitely come back to try some of the other offerings on the menu.

My favorite restaurant in Bloomington! I have been multiple times over the past few years and it has been wonderful each time. I usually always get the Tibetan Dumplings: Shogo and momo are my go-tos. They are homemade daily - so fresh and flavorful! This trip, I tried them both pan-fried - still good but the friedness/oil overtook the simple flavor of the fresh dough. I love their dumplings and will continue to get them plain (without pan frying). Entrees come with soup or salad. The lentil soup is underrated: simple, straightforward, tasty, comforting (even in summer!). The salad greens are a bit underwhelming with a few pieces of iceberg lettuces - though the dressing is perfectly salty, gingery, and savory. Service is always impeccable, kind, and timely. They are usually very aware of the spice level of certain menu items and are quick to refill waters. The restaurant is a house. The inside feels very cozy and intimate. I would suggest talking at a low speaking volume because it is a bit tight in there. The decor is on brand for a Tibetan themed place: Dalai Lama images and quotes as well as Tibetan patterns, prayer flags, etc. Overall, I think it is the most underrated place in Bloomington: Homemade, simple, nostalgic, comforting flavors.

Tibetan dumpling and stir fried garlic veggies with tofu over rice.

Nice place for a tasty, inexpensive lunch in the International Row area of downtown Bloomington, IN, especially if you are a vegetarian or vegan. Located in an historical cottage, the decor is minimalist but reflects the Tibetan Buddhist traditions of the owners. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We had never tried Tibetan food and here at least it is an interesting mixture of Indian, Chinese and Thai influences. As an appetizer, we enjoyed the samosas, which were nice and crispy on the outside and filled with curried potatoes, peas, onions and spices. We tried the Tibetan dumplings (Shogo -- potato filling), which were accompanied by very tasty sauces. The portion was surprisingly large and filling as these seemed bigger and more substantial than similar Chinese style dumplings. We also had a traditional Tibetan stew (Kham Amdo Thugpa) with chicken and noodles, which was really good, and stir fry veggies with tofu in a garlic sauce with rice (Temo Sha Tsel), which was good, but a little bland. We had spice level 3 for both, but would probably go for at least 4 if we had them again. Overall this is a good place to experience Tibetan food and culture.

We were in Bloomington for the day and planned to visit the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center and thought it would be fun to try some Tibetan food first, since we'd never had it. We were greeted warmly and seated right away. One thing I'll warn you about (as an American with an insect phobia) is that there are spiders that live in the windows inside this restaurant. If you leave them alone, they'll stay put and won't bother you. I can't detract any stars for that because our experience was so pleasant that I honestly wasn't even bothered, which is saying a lot for me. The menu lists foods from different countries, but we were there for Tibetan food. We started with Tibetan steamed bread, which was quite nice, though slightly bland to our palates. We enjoyed a salad (I would pay large sums to eat that dressing every day) and shared a sampler platter of their dumplings. The platter is awesome because it has every dumpling they offer, both fried and steamed, and all of them were delicious. We finished with a very yummy warm, sweet rice dessert with raisins. My husband enjoyed a mango lassi (Indian, not Tibetan, but he can never pass it up when it's on the menu) and I had a Tibetan tea, which was more savory than sweet and quite lovely. The service was kind and attentive and very helpful with suggestions. Great little place, delicious food, and would definitely return!

Pros: Tibetan food is really hard to find! It's awesome that I get to try Tibetan food In Bloomington, IN! Cons: food isn't very...how do I put it...restaurant quality. It's something that I'd expect to have at a Tibetan friend's place but not at a restaurant. They also serve a mix of Tibetan food and other Asian cuisines which can be very confusing and misleading to folks how do not know Asian cuisines very well.

Came here with some friends and we shared some dumplings and samosas. Both were really good, with the samosas being my favorite. The flavor was really good and the texture was nice and soft, the sauce it came with was really good as well! I ordered the Kham Amdo Thugpa. The noodles and vegetables were really good in flavor, but the broth was too light for my taste. I ended up adding some if the dipping sauce from the dumplings and it fixed it a bit, but the flavor was just missing something for me. However, it came with a salad and the dressing was so good I could drink it. From what I've seen online though Tibetan cuisine is usually light in flavor, so that probably explains it. Overall the atmosphere was really good and the food was decent. If you're like me and you like heavy flavors maybe pass on this one. Otherwise its still good and would consider going again.

We ordered from the Tibetan cuisine part of the lunch menu (they also have Thai and some Chinese dishes). The dumplings were perfect, the soups were lite and the flavors wholesome. I honestly felt like I was eating a grandma's soup/stew; simple, delicate, flavorful. Definitely will return.

I was in Bloomington for a quick overnight and day to traipse around and see and try things.Several people asked me if the Tibetan restaurants in town were still open, and I had no idea....they were referring to when they had gone to school in town or the last time several years ago they had visited. The friend I was with remembered this place fondly, and she could get easily vegan options here, so we opted to give it a try! My friend had been telling me about momo so I knew I would be getting an order of those. And the samosas also caught my eye. We came at a strange time, and there was literally no one else in the place. We sat ourselves and hoped that was ok. Service was...leisurely. The food was tasty and certainly hit the spot. I mostly wish we had sat somewhere else because there was an ENOURMOUS spider web in the corner of the window near where we sat. Like....pests exist, I get it. But how long since that was cleared out?! I just sat at the far, far end of the table from that thing. It was disconcerting. I didn't really want to say anything about it in my review, but that spider web window situation has stuck with me longer than the memory of the food.

The food was spiced well, healthy tasting and authentic! I loved my dish with the temo added! Ordered it with chicken and #3 spicy! I could have went a little hotter with the spicy, but was just right in flavor with a little kick! Will go back to try some dumplings another time!

I appreciated the number of vegetarian and vegan options available and that they were clearly marked. Service was good, and the patio was a nice place to sit on a warm evening.

We were looking for something a bit out of the ordinary and decided to try this cute spot on our day trip to Bloomington. It was delightful! We were not disappointed at all by the food, service or atmosphere! There is quite a bit of outside seating in shaded areas or under umbrellas, and the server suggested a cooler spot to us when he noticed we were getting hot. They have a very refreshing water feature near some tables which our waiter turned on for us. We decided upon Tibetan specials so tried cabbage, carrot and onion dumplings as our appetizer. They were small pockets of heaven! So light and fluffy, steaming with flavor but not overpowering and the perfect size for dipping! We would return again just to get more of these! The lunch special came with either soup or salad so we both tried the side salad. It was tasty but what pushed it to flavortown was the unique dressing. Delicious and light! The main course was the Tibetan stew with daikon radish, noodles, veggies and a broth you could eat forever. The flavor was robust yet refreshing and the perfect amount. It was a lovely spot for a fun lunch and we highly recommend it! Definitely returning!

We started with the ttuk kko chi which were rice cakes covered in a gochujang sauce. The cakes were crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The sauce it was in was amazing, balancing the heat from the gochujang with some sweetness. Next, we got the Korean fried chicken (they were out of KFC wings). I remember the sauce being a little more red last time, but it was still good. Super crispy exterior and no excess batter so we just tasted the juicy chicken. The two entrees we got were the spicy chicken and jaeyuk. The spicy chicken was flavorful and tender. Along with the chicken, the veggies were stir fried nicely and coated in the broth. The jaeyuk was a little better with the pork having a great marinade and also being super tender. On top of the food we ordered, we were given a salad, soup, and rice which were all nice accompaniments. This was the meal I was looking forward to the most in my return and it did not disappoint. The only and I mean only thing to change is having bigger napkins on the table. Everything else is great and most importantly all the food is delicious.

The menu is very vegetarian-friendly since you can choose tofu as a protein for most entrees, and even vegan-friendly since they have nondairy milk options for drinks and some entrees can be easily customized to be vegan (order with tofu/no meat and remove egg). I got a matcha latte with brown sugar crystal boba and the Pattaya pineapple rice. Matcha latte: The matcha was decent - it had the flavour of matcha latte mix rather than pure matcha, but it wasn't unpleasant, and it was strong. I like the brown sugar crystal boba as a topping - the flavour is very similar to brown sugar tapioca boba, but it doesn't sit as heavy. It's a different kind of chewy than tapioca, but it's close enough that it basically gives the same kind of experience as regular tapioca boba in a drink. Pattaya pineapple rice: Really good! The rice was well-seasoned and the pieces of juicy pineapple and raisins added some sweetness that contrasted very nicely with the curry-spiced rice. They have 5 spice levels (mild, medium, hot, extra hot, Thai hot). I usually went for medium heat when I lived on the west coast, but since this is the Midwest, I tried "hot" and found it had a bit of a kick, but the heat was still secondary to the other flavours, so it was the right choice for me. Very good service. The waiter was very friendly and attentive without hovering - he came by at just the right times. My drink and food came out not too long after I ordered. The place is nice. Like the other restaurants in this area, it's situated in a small house-like building. The atmosphere feels down-to-earth. There were lots of things on the menu that caught my interest, so I'll definitely be back!

RHS bills itself as 'Vietnamese Fusion' and I have no idea what that might mean, but it was good. Very good. We went on a cold day, so eating on the outside deck wasn't an option. The interior is a basic strip mall location with a decent number of tables and plenty of seating, albeit a bit cramped. It's counter service, so it pays to take a look at the menu in advance and know what you want before you arrive. Paid at the counter, and they came to our table with the food very quickly. I had the 'Be Kind to Each Other' Chicken Pho which came with the usual sides of sprouts, basil, lime and noodles. You could upgrade your noodles if you wanted. I also added an order of cajun fries, which doesn't really seem like a 'Vietnamese Fusion' choice, but I love cajun fries so who was I to question them? The Pho was terrific. Loved it. The fries were very very good, though maybe a bit generous on the cajun. Still very good, and I definitely will return for this meal again. Friend ordered the Spam Banh Mi. Seriously???? Well, he did. And he said it was very good. You actually pay $0.50 extra for spam. Again, not sure what world you pay extra for the Spam but he did it. He selected the Fire Engine Tim sauce, which was to be spicy. When I pressed him for more details on the quality he said it could be spicier even with that sauce, but otherwise it was very good. He said to point out on Yelp that "That Diet Coke was clutch" - he may have been making fun of my questioning :) All in all a very good experience and I'll definitely return. I don't find much good pho in Bloomington, so it's nice to have a place for that. I won't be eating Spam anytime soon. I'm giving 4 stars only because the seating was a bit cramped and it was busy inside. I would go 4.5 if it weren't in a strip mall and pretty 'basic' ambiance. And that canned Diet Coke is clutch!

Their food may not be totally traditional but I really enjoy it. The level of "authenticity" will vary depending on what you order and which sauces you get in the customizable entrees. Their banh mi bread is different from the banh mi bread I'm used to but I actually like it a lot more. It's crustier and more tender than the usual banh mi bread, closer to a French-style baguette. They stack on lots of fresh veggies. The tofu is thinly-sliced and fried for tenderness that gives it a somewhat similar texture to deli meat. You can also get any banh mi combo as a wrap with the same ingredients, and while the wrap is good for a change of pace, I have to say I prefer the banh mi because the bread is so good. Their other entrees are also delicious and come in hefty portions. Their mapo tofu is the best vegetarian mapo tofu I've ever had. I usually get a Thai iced tea when I come here. It's strong and just the right amount of sweet. I appreciate the oat milk option! I recently tried the Thai iced coffee and that was also really good. Lastly, the staff who work here are very friendly! It seems like a small operation but they work efficiently so I've never had to wait too long for my order! The only thing that's left to be desired here is that everything is served in takeaway containers and they only have plastic cutlery (except spoons for some reason), but I don't know what they're dealing with in terms of capacity to use actual dining ware, so I am not letting that affect my rating.

I showed up about 50 minutes after ordering and my food was hot and ready on arrival. The host who greeted me and brought out my order was very friendly. While I was waiting for him to get my food from the back, another staff member also came by to check that I was being helped. I ordered the fried eggplant stir-fry with tofu and the coconut ice cream. The stir-fry tasted good, but I selected spice level 3 "hot" (and the takeout container had a "3" written on it so I know they got it), yet there was not a hint of spice in the dish, not even a single chili flake. I don't know if they messed up and forgot to add the spice or what, but I was kind of let down. Taking the heat level out of the equation, it would rate it about average for American Thai food. I wasn't really impressed by the dish, but I enjoyed it (spicy is nice but not a must-have for me if there are other flavours). I liked the coconut ice cream dessert. The included banana spring rolls were helpfully packaged in foil separate from the ice cream, so I warmed them up in my oven a little, and they were very good warm. I'm pretty sure that what the menu calls "homemade coconut ice cream" was actually vanilla bean ice cream with shredded coconut on top. Which is still delicious but not what is written on the menu. Based on my single visit, I don't think this is close to the best Thai in Bloomington, but it's alright, and I might come here again because it's closer to home than the other places I like. I might have even given the food 4 stars if it had just been described differently on the menu, but the lack of spice in a dish that was supposed to be made hot plus the "homemade coconut ice cream" not being that left a little bit of a bad impression.

I happened to visit on a warmer day so I was able to see the space with the garage door open. It was golden hour and it had everything all lit up. Very beautiful. Our service was amazing, couldn't have asked for a better server. I can't remember her name but she was so detailed in her descriptions, thoughtful with her suggestions, and had the perfect amount of attentiveness. Now on to the fun parts.... Drinks were a hit! We told our server what we like and they recommended a couple options. I again can't remember the exact name of the drink but mine was a gin cocktail. I'll attach some photos for you. As for the food, every bite I took was delicious. Our table shared the fried brussel sprouts and the ginger miso salad. A very lovely way to ease into our meal on a lighter note. They split up the salad onto two plates for us, which was sweet of them. The portion was pretty good for a $12 salad. Very refreshing. Brussel sprouts were absolutely fire. Get them! Along with that, I also ordered the tempura shrimp maki roll. Inside the roll was cucumber and avocado with giant tempura shrimp right on top, drizzled in spicy mayo. The presentation was cool, a slightly deconstructed version of what I would get somewhere else. There wasn't a single bite left on the plate. I would order all three of these dishes again in a heartbeat. Perfect for a date night or special occasion, but also works for just grabbing a bite with friends. Whenever I find myself back in Indy, Modita will be on my list.

This is my wife and I's favorite restaurant in all of Indy. We were lucky to visit last night, and…read morestill great as always. We had a reservation at 6:45, and were sat shortly after that time. The place was busy for a Friday night, and was somewhat loud. Our waitress greeted us quickly, and was on top of things throughout the night. I started off with a ginger miso salad, based on recommendations on this page. Personally, I could have went without the $12 salad. I would have paid more like $6 for the amount of actual salad I got. The dressing was good, but nothing extraordinary. I did ask for no cucumbers- I could taste a faint taste of cucumbers on the salad, so think they just took them off after they were already placed. We split some Bao Buns. These were the highlight of the show. The pork on them was thick, the slaw was fresh, and the bao bun itself was fluffy. We split two dishes for dinner- the short rib and the chicken udon noodles. The chicken udon noodles were fantastic- packed full of flavor and tons of toppings in it. The short rib fell a little short of my expectations, but I had high expectations to begin with. We have had the short rib multiple times in the past- and normally it is a hunk of meat, similar to a roast. Now, it is strips of tiny pieces of meat with a bone attached to it. If the owner/general manager is reading this- GO BACK TO THE ROAST STYLE- the strips of meat was too much work to eat. Still packed full of great flavor though. I had the bridge to Anshun for my drink. I had never had Baiju before, but glad I tried it. It was a tangy drink that was also sweet- would say it's a must try. Overall, some changes since our last visit that weren't expected, but overall had a great evening here. Can't wait to return.

In town on family business, for a couple of days, I was looking for someplace interesting for…read moredinner on a Wednesday evening. It had been before the pandemic since my last time in Indianapolis and much has changed on the city's dining and drinking landscape. Following a recommendation from a bartender at Sundry & Vice, I made my way to BODHI. I didn't have reservations, which I'd strongly recommend, since the place was packed on Wednesday night before 6PM. Fortunately, I was able to snag a seat at the bar, which was ideal since I was dining solo. Upon scanning the hip, high-energy, yet petite dining room, I had a sense of deja vu about it before realizing that I had been in this space before back when it was Black Market. I started off with a cocktail from Bodhi's intriguing and expansive drink list, a 7 Realms of Happiness, made with Old Hamer Bourbon, Faccia Brutto Centerbe, Cappelletti amaro, saffron honey, and lemon. My thought was that it's their twist on a classic Whiskey Smash. It was bittersweet, yet balanced, and simply a delight. As for the food, BODHI's menu is concise hitting the most of the Thai food usual suspects. I had the Papaya Salad and the Shrimp Green Curry. The papaya salad came out first. I was pleasantly surprised by its plating, looking much more like an elaborate entree with its cashews, watermelon radish, and chicharrones than the humble side salad atop a leaf of lettuce or cabbage that I've usually received at virtually every Thai restaurant I've ever been. It was just a pretty plate as it tasted even better than it looked. It was fresh and flavorful as those flavors popped from the perfect balance of salty, sweet, sour, spicy, and funky. It was the best rendition of a papaya salad that I've tasted. My bowl of curry was no less successful in balancing those diverse Thai flavor profiles. Unlike some/many other curries I've had where it seems like a bowl full of sauce with bits and pieces of protein or vegetables, Bodhi's rendition achieved the perfect "solids to sauce" ratio. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and the curry itself was bold and bright on my tongue. It was a delicious spoonful. I loved it! For "dessert", I had a second cocktail, the Garnet, a booze-forward whisky drink made with Mars Iwai Tradition, Pinhook Rye, Akashi Ume Plum whisky, Veda Mushroom Liqueur, Balsamic Vermouth, celery & orange bitters, and topped with a Moon Smoke Bubble. It was very unique, tasty and satisfying, if not a bit difficult to describe. I would maybe compare it to an Asian-influenced Vieux Carre and I thought it was excellent. Service from Carli, the bartender, was stellar throughout my night as she was friendly, helpful and exceedingly outstanding in making my drinks. A definite rock star! BODHI was outstanding. I'm not sure how to best describe the place. Was it as an amazing Thai restaurant that also does incredible cocktails or an amazing cocktail bar that also does killer Thai food? Regardless, I could not have enjoyed my experience more. If/when I'm back in Indy, BODHI is at the top of my list for a visit!
