Tried Sunny Palace for dinner. I wouldn't say it was anything outstanding, but it was solid and hit the spot since I had been craving Chinese. It seems like they get plenty of both takeout and dine-in customers. I dined in and the service was very good - the waitress was very friendly and came by often enough even though she was very busy. The menu is large but sensibly organized so you can easily find what you're looking for. They have two sides of the menu - one side has American style dishes and one side has Asian style. They also have a bubble tea menu with enough options to be comparable with specialized bubble tea shops. I got the fried tofu home style and a taro smoothie. The sauce for the tofu was tasty, the tofu and veggies were cooked perfectly, and the white rice on the side was fresh and fluffy. Big portion but not too big to finish if you're hungry. Pretty good taro smoothie too. The menu shows the option to adjust sugar and ice levels; I forgot to ask for less sweet, but the default wasn't too sweet. I am not a Chinese food connoisseur, but my experience was great! The hour I was there, I did not see another customer (on a Saturday at 1pm) which was nice to have the place to myself. I wasn't expecting much since I'd never heard of this place, and I saw the reviews; however, it was good! The staff were very kind and polite. I didn't have to wait too long for my food, and it tasted hot and fresh and delicious. It was a good sized portion with enough to box up and eat for lunch tomorrow. I ordered General Tsos. Absolutely solid Chinese standards, which I think can go head-to-head with the other Chinese places in other parts of town. (This also makes it the first restaurant east of campus that I've actually liked, so I'll almost certainly go back.) Lazi pork intestine had a great flavor, though it could've been spicier. The pork intestine was on the crispy side, which was new to me but not bothersome. Shredded cabbage was standard but fresh and cooked well. Overall I wasn't blown away--I wouldn't make a special trip from out of town--but it's a solid option, especially with the east side of town being so bereft. read more

Love this place!! The Crab Rangoon is fat and the best and the Steamed Dumplings were delicious and tender. I always order the Moo Goo Gai Pan. It arrived fresh and hot. Alright so let's give this a whirl. Lots to talk on. Number one as people say they seem to cater to carryout and delivery well got lots of calls and walk in while we were ordering and waiting. Now we were dine in option as people have stated empty inside also I side is dated needs a little love and cleaning even just a good old scrub down and organization. We got water to drink bur they did offer a variety of drinks however bottled or canned and the fridge is in the open where they offer them from was empty looking not fully stocked or even midway to give a nice variety view. The bathrooms need an over heal for sure and a power sprayer taken to old tile again a little care can go a long way but when I see bathrooms like that it's saddening especially if you don't have a lot of foot traffic inside. But yes not much in decor or organization there the menu is very large with many items about 5 to 6 pages worth,usually this is a sign that the kitchen had to much going on so many items to keep track of and keep fresh can be hard. What we ordered tasted fresh and great except the crab ragoon had this old texture to it and the filling wasn't that great. The mapo tofu was delicious and spicey and fresh as should be. The general so's chicken was fresh hot and delicious as well. The egg drop soup was not instant but fresh made and you could taste it was good as well. I got the beef noodle soup with ramen noodles for selection of noodle a little disappointed it was more like spaghetti noodle then actual ramen so other then that flavor was there and it did taste good I did not finish that or take it to go though. We also got pork belly plate which was hot fresh and delicious as well with side of green beans in chili sauce also fresh and hot and crisp. So over all 4 out of 5 starts great service and food but lack or organized environment and cleanliness is what cost it a star i didn't give it a three star becasue they don't own the building so who knows what they have to go through to get updates done being In a strip mall location. We decided to try this place on a Wednesday evening And we are glad we did. The food was very good. We had the crab Rangoon appetizer, which was very good. It was small and crispy and looks handmade. We also ordered the egg roll appetizer. I did not care for the flavor of the eggrolls. There was a flavor that did not taste like a normal egg roll. I ordered the shrimp and vegetables, which was excellent and delicious. The shrimp was large and tasty, and it was cooked perfectly and there was not too much salt in it. I would definitely order this again. My boyfriend had Hunan chicken and he asked for extra mushrooms and no broccoli and they were happy to do that. He said it was very good. The ambiance was not that great but they did have very comfortable booths for seating. We were the only people in the restaurant besides the two women who work there and three children that were eating at a large round table an assortment of Chinese food. They did a lot of takeout business while we were there but I think people should definitely try going here to eat in. The service was fairly good once someone came over to the table. She was preoccupied with something at the front desk at first, and I went up there and told her we were ready to order. All was well. Nice waitress. All in all, I would say, give this restaurant a try the food is excellent and it's definitely worth going here. We will be returning. read more

Came here the other day and found it to be a fairly nice Chinese food place. The items can definitely be hit and miss. We ordered the steam buns, dumplings, and rice cakes. The steam buns were really tasty. Tasted very fresh and chewy with a good bbq pork filling. Would definitely recommend these. The dumplings looked a little off color and did not taste as fresh as the steam buns. The rice cakes were also pretty good, prepared with cabbage and pork all stir fried together. Ordered take-out and arrived a bit early so also scoped out the interior, which is well laid out and seemed recently updated. The staff were warm and prompt. Visited Sunny Palace because our usual Chinese place was closed. Admittedly this was a bit late on a Monday night, but it was EMPTY. Seriously empty as in we are the only people in the place. It's a standard strip mall location, basic tables and chairs and must do the majority of its business from carryout, though we saw only 3 orders leave the restaurant while we were there. Family of four (2 adults and 2 kids) who love Chinese food, didn't expect a kids menu but we were surprised that the portions came in only one size, and since we couldn't agree on anything we had four adult meals. Plenty of leftovers at least! Food was good - standard Chinese fare in this type of restaurant. We don't love most buffets so were happy this place had menu service instead (no buffet option). Wife had chicken and broccoli, which she liked. Daughter had sweet & sour chicken, pretty good though nothing to write home about. Son had chicken fried rice which was good. And for once, I had the best meal at the table with the General Tso's chicken. It was fabulous. Very spicy, just the right amount of sauce, and the broccoli was steamed and presentation was great. It stood out and I would go back for this, albeit in a to-go order. The odd part of the experience was the empty restaurant and hovering service. The two employees working out front both stood a few feet away and basically stared at us while we ate. One was new, the other helping. But it was an odd feeling throughout the meal to have them lurking. And not in a '5-star restaurant always hovering to help you out' kind of way. It was a bit strange to say the least. Ordered a variety of foods for carry out, general tso's, pork fried rice, mei fun, egg rolls, spring rolls, dumplings, chicken skewers, and lo mein... nothing was good. There wasn't any chicken inside of the general tso's... just doughy balls that had once maybe been fried, but we're now lukewarm and soggy. The fried rice didn't have much flavor, but I swear I tasted a bit of cinnamon. The mei fun was okay, but tasted strongly of yellow curry, which was not what I expected at all. Lo mein was soggy and everything else was cold or lukewarm... and they made us wait 20 mins past the promised time for cold food. Very disappointed, will not return. read more

Since my last review I have had food from sunny palace twice. I went inside once to eat, I thought the prices and service were good. I just had sweet and sour chicken which is difficult to screw up lol. I thought it was pretty good and my friend thought her meal was good too. Last night I had a pick up order through the Beyond Menu app. I didn't want to get delivery since I live very close to the restaurant, so it would be pointless to pay extra for that. I have never used this app before, so maybe I should've called Sunny Palace instead but oh well. I ordered kung pao shrimp with white rice and crab Rangoon, I submitted my phone number with my order and was told that I would receive text message updates about my order. Well an hour goes by and I've heard nothing. I'm not sure to place my blame on the beyond menu app or sunny palace, but I feel like a phone call from the restaurant isn't asking a lot. I called them twice and they didn't answer and they finally called me back and told me I could pick up my food. I went inside to pick up my food and they still had me sit there and wait a few minutes, even though I could see my bag of food and I already paid for it, I just needed to be handed the food and leave.... The food itself was pretty good. There was no spice at all in the kung pao shrimp which was disappointing, and the crab Rangoon was really chewy. Overall the flavor of everything was good though. It really stinks that I've had so many bad experiences here, I would like to get pick up more often since I live so close to the restaurant but I would advise anyone interested in eating here to not get delivery or pick up from sunny palace. Oh man, what can I say other than don't come here if you're hungry. Not only was the food pretty yucky, but the workers were quite rude. Sometimes it's worth it to face rude employees for really good food - but here there's nothing worth the social frustration. The issues: -Our spring rolls weren't fully cooked, they were mushy and couldn't further be consumed -The egg rolls weren't crispy, just super soft No proper sauces came with the rolls or egg foo young? -About half the food was cold -Overall freshness is questionable because everything was just...... icky. Update: I came back again in April 2019 for a second shot. Sigh......nope. Still the same problems. Think I'm officially done trying to make this place work. read more

I've really, really tried with this place. It's 5 minutes away. I had a great Lazi Chicken dish from their Asian menu last time out and was ready to sing their praises. Tonight, we ordered Sesame Chicken and I got the Kung Pao Sichuan off the Asian menu (thinking it might be better than the usual American style) and both were, frankly, awful. Mine tasted as if hit was cooked days ago and just reheated. The chicken was way over cooked, as was the Sesame Chicken my wife got. The Vietnamese summer rolls were filled with nothing but noodles. Not even a shred of carrot. I'm throwing in the towel on Sunny Palace until they get their act together. With all the new Chinese places open in the past five years here, there's no reason to settle for something like we ate tonight. It is an okay place for Chinese food. It is not easy to guess where the chef is from. For some dishes have some north-china flavor, but others are like some Hong Kong food. For the spicy dishes, just one is enough. Not because they are spicy, but they have exactly the same flavor... The only difference is the meat in it... Don't order boiled fish, it sucks, it is not boiled fish at all, and the size is extremely small. I liked it when I first went there. It is one of the 3-4 places that serve somewhat "real" chinese food in Bloomington. We had hotpot beef, duck slices with green pepper and onion, and stir-fried eggplants. The portion sizes are relatively smaller that Lucky Express, and the prices are steep (but that's the case for almost all of the asian places here, I guess they really try to rip off their own folks, or rather, the local white people. The fetid offal from Sunny Palace I just poured down my pie hole set a new low for what can be considered food, and the firehose-caliber shit Niagara my ass just gushed forth underlines my point impressively. Glutinous, sodden, tasteless fried rice; fibrous, nodule-studded chicken that resembled something the Donner party might have encountered; phlegm-like wonton soup.....this assortment of foulness offered a veritable carnival of gastronomic horrors. Overpriced, nauseating, barely lukewarm: the late-night repast I ordered was so awful, in so many ways, the experience of eating it bordered on a fascinating kind of revolting science experiment or slow-motion car crash. I was repelled, but almost wanted to see how bad it could get. I soldiered through as comprehensive a representative sampling as my gastrointestinal tract would allow, before my gut began making sounds normally reserved for groaning shipwrecks and the subsonic communication of humpback whales. When my ass suddenly lurched into my pancreas, and a fountain of bile backed up into my windpipe, I knew I was hosed, and straight-armed the shitter door like the figure on the Heisman trophy. This place I enjoyed because they have fast food and all my favorites, including crab rangoons and even Pad Thai! Their Pad Thai is the kind I'm used to and love: made quickly, thrown crunched peanuts on top, and piping hot. We used to get takeout from Sunny Palace a lot--the servers weren't super friendly but the food was good, and it was close to where we lived at the time. Staff made me feel as though I didn't belong there. First question was, What did you order? I looked puzzled and replied, I haven't ordered yet. Then she asked what I would like. I took a minute to look over the menu which appeared to annoy her. The I ordered the Beef and Broccoli and rice comes on the side. As she rang up my order, another couple came in behind me. She instructed them to sit anywhere they like. I paid for the meal and headed toward a table, but it was dirty. So I looked at another table for 6 and was told to sit at the dirty table and she would come back and clean it. When the food came out, it was more warm than cold, but certainly not hot. I just couldn't eat the "beef". It was weird, like nothing I'd ever had before. Strange texture. Strange flavor. And I've eaten in a LOT of Chinese restaurants. Won't ever go back.
