Yes, I know the market was/is soft, but I got this apartment at this price because my realtor: 1) translated what I wanted into what I saw, 2) knew virtually every building and unit on the market (and about to be on the market) and 3) she has a good rapport with lots of other realtors (a rare thing, I found). In my case, she was able to get me in to see the apartment early, and I believe that my offer came with added credibility because I had worked with Nan. Needless to say, I was skeptical when I came across a real estate startup that bills itself as a "personalized rental service" without the insane fees. I thought it couldn't be worse than any other brokerage, so I gave Domi a shot. First off, I didn't even have to search. I took a survey and then the agent (Shea) reached out to walk me through the process and presented a few options. I told her the ones I liked, and she set up a few tours for me that week. I like to know my options before I make a big decision, so we toured a few times before I found an apartment that was a perfect fit. From there Shea contacted the landlord, I sent her all my info, and she took care of everything else. I did have a few questions about the lease, but she got back to me quickly and answered my questions. The apartment I rented was in a no-fee building, but I still expected there to be some sort of charge for the time she spent doing everything. NOTHING. I didn't have to pay a dime, which honestly I might have been willing to because the whole process went smoothly and saved me a lot of time. But I haven't even gotten to the best part: she managed to negotiate my rent down, which you know is no easy feat if you've ever dealt with these big landlords If you're new to New York and don't know anything about renting in the city or you just don't want to take the time to search yourself, I would definitely recommend Domi. She was super thoughtful, kind, and personally invested into getting us the place we loved. Additionally, the application fee was extremely affordable for credit/BG check. To tell the truth, I've been swindled by brokers/realty groups before - but these people are nothing of that sort. She helped me adjust my expectations and feel confident in my budget and criteria. I was also looking out-of-state, which made things even more difficult and added a lot of anxiety. Working with Lauren took a lot of this anxiety out of the equation. I could send her listings to look at (because I could not stop obsessively checking StreetEasy) day or night and she was responsive and helpful. Every time I was in town she set up listings for us to see, and it was also very helpful to have her there with me to discuss and compare to things we had seen previously. Many times too, Lauren noticed things about apartments that I hadn't that would have had a considerable impact on my comfort level living there. We got in touch with Akeba, who showed us the place right away. She was great--personable, friendly, not fake, and knowledgeable. And the place was HUGE--I thought the listing was probably BS, just because most are, but it turned out to be even better than the listing made it sound AND it was cheap. (3br for $200 less than the 1br we live in now? yesplz.) We needed to move asap so I provided every last piece of documentation I could almost immediately--I'm used to things happening fast around here. Everything seemed to be lining up perfectly. Then the landlord decided she wasn't okay with my dog anymore. Apparently she had listed the place as pet-friendly so's to, I dunno, stroke her ego or something, and then came up with some goofy reason for refusing anyone with a pet. (She told me my very well-trained Chihuahua mix who is roughly the size of your average housecat was "too big.") (I know this isn't the broker's fault, but it's part of the narrative, or something. I was rejected almost immediately, is the important part.) The broker then tells me, "It's okay, I can help you look for other places." Great! We have like two days to get this figured out so let's go... and the next time I hear from her is about a week and a half later, several days after when I'd told her my lease was up, for one place that's not even close to what we were looking for. The best part? Days after I'd been rejected for the original apartment, and after it became clear that they had no real intention of helping, they still charged my card $65 for a credit report. (Also, as a side note, making your clients write down their credit card number, expiration date, etc. and e-mail it to you is super sketchy and not even really necessary.) I hadn't used them before because I was wary of their lack of offerings in my price range, and now it looks like this is a trend that may continue. Honestly, it makes me sad that it turned out this way, because we had such a great experience at the viewing. Corcoran, I am disappoint.
