When in Lamar, this is apparently the go to place- well it might be one of the only places- since Lamar is small. Tavern 1301 has a spacious layout inside the Cow Palace Inn- hilarious! Tavern 1301 has an expansive menu. A large majority of the menu features items from the local ranchers and farmers of SE Colorado. We wanted to try a variety of tastes from the menu, so we ordered a few things to split and share. We started with hot wings with raspberry diablo sauce- not super diablo but had a good flavor and the wings were cooked perfectly. I the opted for the 6oz tenderloin filet, cooked to medium temp. I selected the sweet corn tamale and loaded mashed potatoes for my sides. I also added the 'shroom,onion,and gorgonzola topping to my steak. This was not so much a topping, but an entire skillet in and of itself- see pic. It was too much for a 6oz steak. The steak was great as expected. Loaded mashed potatoes were yummy- large portion-but good. The sweet corn tamale was not a tamale. They explained it as a deconstructed tamale. What they meant was that it was corn bread. Not bad, just not what I expected. Our server was very nice and checked on us frequently. We ended up back at Tavern 1301 later in the evening for a night cap. What a great meal. This is my 3rd visit to Tavern 1301 and every meal has been great. Tonight I tried the Pork Chop with Squash ravioli and and it was perfection! Service was great as usual and the Blueberry Mojito was very good. I don't get down to Lamar very often but this will be my go to every time i do. read more

Tavern 1301 was located in walking distance from our hotel. They are in an industrial type feel hotel, which I believe is historic. They had plenty to choose from but since we weren't hungry we just got the creamy chipotle shrimp pasta and the mussels and linguini. The chipotle shrimp pasta was slightly spicy, a little smoke flavor and an ice creamy finish. The mussels were shell on, in a lemon butter wine sauce with a little zing from a chili, mayve a Serrano? There was no chopped up chili bits in sight so it was hard to tell. I enjoyed it. We got dessert to go; bread pudding and chocolate brownie. Both smelled delicious but I haven't tried it yet. We both had leftovers of dinner. We got there at 530 and it filled up pretty quickly. It does get loud and the metal walls don't absorb any sound. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure they bounced the sound back at us. They have a full bar and some nice drinks but we didn't have any with dinner. I would come back for the food as our portions were huge and they tasted elevated without an elevated price tag. Meal was 78 without tip for two entrees, two desserts and a mocktail. It would easily be closer to $120 in Denver proper. If you are looking for quiet intimate conversation, this is not the place but if you're looking for good food and don't mind some noise, this will be a great spot. read more

Great place for dinner in Lamar. The deconstructed tamale was amazing, as were the brisket fajitas. Would have enjoyed more vegetables with the entree, but that didn't keep me from devouring it. My colleague ordered the porkchop, which looked amazing. Really nice waitstaff; very patient when we asked to split checks among the group. The vibe is a bit like a 90's mall courtyard, but the real tropical plants soften it up and add some privacy. If you're in Lamar, give this place a try. You'll come away happy. read more

First of all, if you are driving through Lamar, CO this is the place to eat in town. Surprisingly, folks around the panhandle New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas always stop by. First entering in it's you are greeted and you have the option for the bar or sit down. The sit-down is a little bit more calmer with a chill atmosphere. I love the wait staff, they are so attentive to your requests and responsive. I really enjoyed my dinner with a colleague of mine. I had the ribeye, mid rare with the sweet corn tamale. The steak was prepared perfect to my preference. I do prefer my temp a little bit more on the rarer side than medium. Dressing had a different flavor profile I haven't tasted before. Grape tomatoes were a tad on the softer side but it was great. Finally, I finished the night with a sweet night cap of the crème brûlée. Visually and flavor wise of the dishes were stupendous. A sister of the Dish Room in eastern Colorado, this place is its equal. Outstanding food in a nice but casual atmosphere. I had the pork chop which was outstanding with fall flavors and vegetables. The Dish Room poppers were as good as I remember from the Dish Room. Very friendly staff, lots of space in a huge atrium of a retro hotel. We stopped by on a road trip through Lamar. This place is a hidden gem, would not expect it in a motel. They were accommodating to our family, sitting us where we requested. Food was good all around. The endless salad was huge, fresh tomatoes and rainbow carrots. The beef and bean chili with garlic bread was amazing. Steak had a great taste. Kid portions were large too. What a gem in a small town. We stumbled upon this place on a snowy night as it was right across from our hotel. The tavern was full but the tables across were open so we were seated there. We were quickly waited on and our drinks came quickly as well. Our waiter obviously took pride in his job and very attentive in addition to explaining and recommending apps and entrees. Food was very good, portions were amply sized and presentation was nice. The restaurant area feels like part of the pool area, but you can't smell chlorine, see a pool or see anyone in suits; so it's just a feeling I had not reality. I've been here twice on work trips. The service: amazing! Didn't have to wait for anything and folks were very engaging Ambiance: very chill place, great vibes with the music! "Ophelia" is such a hit! Food: I've been here on a Tuesday both times. The special was a steak and potatoes, so simple but man oh man was it good! The second time I got the wolf man, at first I was intimidated by the size of the sandwich but then I looked back at my plate and damnnnn it was gone. I didn't even notice I was crushing that plate. What a great hidden gem! Traveling thru from SF, CA with my Dad and stopped here for a late lunch after seeing the sign. They seem to be remodeling and upgrading the space and have already added a lot of beautiful details at the hotel. The restaurant itself is an oasis in hot weather! Filled with beautiful green trees and lighting, it is a beautiful surprise when you pass thru the hallway. Wow! Lamar has a population of around 8,000, so this restaurant is a real gem. The food at Tavern 1301 is awesome. My family and I ordered 3 different dinner entrees, and we all agreed that the flavors and presentations were first-rate. And the service matched the quality of the food. Food was very good. I had steak and loaded mashed potatoes, my wife had the shrimp scampi and said it was delicious!!! They make a green chili salsa that is soooo good! Staff were very diligent about making sure we had drinks and were so nice. We sat in the pergola area where you're surrounded by beautiful large tropical plants.
