This place has truly delicious food. It is an assuming store/storefront where most thing are already packaged but holy moly did it exceed my already high expectations. A friend recommended it and despite her high praise, even she undersold it. You must get the hummus (I opted for the pine nut) and Turkish eggplant dip (a small container of each will run you $9-10 so it is not cheap but it is worth it). Each dip has the perfect thickness (not to watery or too thick) and was delicious. I heard good things about the bourekas and they had a new brisket boureka out so I bought a pack (10 or so in the package for $22, sold frozen). You heat them in the oven or toaster oven at 350 degrees for 20min. They were absolutely delicious, perfect texture (crunchy outside, soft inside) and the meat inside had so much flavor. For dessert we bought the baklava and pistachio mamoul. Everyone raved about the baklava and I really liked the pistacho mamoul as they were not too sweet (don't let the powdered sugar on the outside fool you). A very kind lady helped me find everything (though if you spend 5min walking around the store which is not that big, you can find everything yourself). Even if you're not Jewish, most have heard of Tavlin. It was a small Kosher grocery store with canned goods and homemade salads- and the best Jelly Donuts around Hanukkah. I'm a huge falafel fan and it's surprising that this is the first time I tried this local store. They are stocked with excellent kosher and vegan specialties. I will surely come back and shop here for my family gatherings. The one small criticism I have: for many many years, growing up in Forest Hills, Queens, where we patronized an original great falafel place, I always came to order 2 HALF falafel, rather than a whole. It's much easier to eat it when cut (simple sandwich principle). This place charged me 2 x $8 for the halves, when a whole falafel is just $13. I was excited to try this place as it's close to my house and I love Mediterranean food. I picked up some baklava which seemed pretty expensive for the amount. To my surprise it was filled with peanuts. It was not very tasty. It lacked the traditional taste. Too long since I've been here was at the beach and stopped by to bring home dinner. Everything was fresh and delicious, it's worth the drive to the south shore for this food. Fellow Yelpers have raved about Tavlin Market for years and now I see why. Tavlin may be small in stature but their well stocked shelves carry an impressive array of vegetarian Middle Eastern delicacies, dried fruits and nuts. Located on busy Merrick Road, one can easily park on the side of the building near Dunkin Donuts and they're open 6 days a week (closed Saturdays). When I entered the store I felt transported into an exotic fragrant bazaar of culinary delights. Many items are homemade by the friendly owners, and that shows in their quality and freshness. I perused the shelves for awhile and gathered an array of tempting items in my little cart. Loved everything I bought but among my personal faves: fig jam made with whole fruit (great for charcuterie); fantastic hummus with spicy chickpeas; creamy French feta cheese and fresh olives perfect for Greek salads; flaky borekas; savory spinach salad; vegetable barley soup; and a chocolate roll that owner Sarah advised me to microwave for 30 seconds to release its chocolatey goodness (that tip worked, thanks!). Also enjoyed the free sample of Turkish eggplant dip, will buy more of that next time. Hopefully my future visits to Tavlin will help me to eat cleaner and healthier in 2021 and beyond. There are many food products in this place! My eyes were drawn to so many products but what was nicest were the people who work here. They were caring, considerate, friendly and willing to help you. They gave you instructions on how to heat products, gave out samples of food and you really felt at home in this market. There's a small section with a bell that sells products pre-made such as Spanikopita, baklava and even falafel balls. Lots of package fresh cookies, nuts and dried fruit and a refrigerated section where you can get Tabouli, hummus and Moroccan eggplant salad. Lots of other products, pita bread and chips! I spied a counter where you can get some olives. At the time I came, they had sufganiyot. The Hanukkah doughnut in chocolate frosted with crème and one's that are filled with jelly. On special order were the mini doughnuts! I saw all of them boxed in containers but sadly all accounted for so there wasn't a box for me. I had to settle for the full-sized doughnut! Took a walk and strolled into Tavlin. As soon as you walked in your smacked in the face with the smell of fresh food. It's a small little market but they have a lot shelf items that were unfamiliar to me and I would go back to try. This time around I got some marinated mushrooms, labne with olive oil and zattar and laffa bread. I had never had labne before. It sounded/looked good. I could've asked the man because he was very nice and welcoming but just decided to unknowingly try it and im glad I did. I would describe as a Mediterranean cream cheese almost. It's delicious. Perfect. Easily 5 star, even though I've never even been in the place. This is quite morbid, but every time someone passes away, Tavlin is guaranteed to be around. It brings happiness. Tavlin Market was on my radar for years but not in an area I pass by often so I would forget to go there. Finally during this Covid epidemic I remembered to visit Tavlin. If you like mediterranean and middle eastern foods this is a place you must check out. Since they don't have a menu, it's a small operation run by a husband and wife, I checked out fellow yelper pics to place an order. I got Babagounoush, hummus, chickpea salad, pita bread and baklava. Sarah the owner was so nice and added a sample of the eggplant dish and a cookie when I picked up my order. The place is small but packed with all kinds of good stuff. They even have a small olive bar. Plenty of canned and jarred products. Coffee, cookies and pastries. But the best is the homemade items. I didn't even get to the Borekas, that will be for my next visit next week. I would also like try the Shakshuka, what a great name shakshuka. It's fun just saying the name. Tavlin Market is a hidden gem on Long Island that offers a great selection of freshly made salads and spreads alongside packaged goods and other Mediterranean foods. As a Romaniote, I was excited to try their homemade Borekas - some of which are vegan - and they were excellent. I also brought my Bulgarian sister-in-law here, and she was pleasantly surprised with the selection as well. While it seems that Tavlin takes safety precautions seriously by limiting the number of people in the store, I was disgusted to see that the young female employee (who was serving food nonetheless) did not have her face covering over her nose! I've been jonesing for Shakshuka & haven't found anyplace near me that sells it. The dish is similar to Sicilian eggs different spices though if you've ever had that. Now what would've set this dish off was some merguez sausage in it. Maybe I'll ask if they can do that next time. Definitely worth the drive from Suffolk County if this is what you're looking for. Stopped by for the first time on our way from the Wantagh Pool. Everything looked and tasted really fresh. We got hummus, baba ganoush, eggplant chickpea salad, bourekas, halva and poppy seed cake and made a quick lunch spread. The poppy seed cake was amazing, just like Russian stores in Brooklyn used to have before they decided to go cheap and make it with subpar ingredients which resulted in dry dough and weird smelling filling. Here, it's pure layers of heavenly goodness. I had so much of it yesterday that my husband joked "Good thing your workplace does not do routine drug testing because you would be off the charts". Nicest business owners you will EVER find! If you are looking for anything w'an Israeli background it's here. Mostly Israeli brands though some not. They are closed on Saturdays and many Jewish Holidays so check before making the trip. Their take-out food is very popular, sold fresh made, frozen or in refridge, depending on the item. If you catch them when they aren't busy they will let you 'taste' most anything. I have been Vegan for years and am always looking for the BEST Falafel...no longer, though I used to enjoy their 'spicy balls' also which they no longer have. They also have 'borechas' (forgive spelling, those little pockets of pastry, filled w'all sorts of things, from Mushrooms, to Spinach, to ???, then baked) both Vegan and Reg. that are seriously addictive. My only complaint is I wish they would make some of the large ones Vegan as the ration of filling/crust is better in the big ones! They also have many things from olives - cashews - halava (Sp.?) of which they must have a doz. varieties, and other sweets, avaliable by the lb. I had a small gathering recently and decided to skip the usual wine and cheese and serve something different and tasty! I wanted to do hummus and tabouli and remembered that this place is nearby so I went in on a Sunday morning and was so happy I did! The owners were very helpful when I asked them to help me select a few spreads to go with pita chips. Slicha. I was away for too long. But I came back today! Everything I love and missed was right here in my own backyard. (Well, yes, I did move....but not off the island) Just walking into the store and smelling the fresh baked products and rich spices made my mouth salivate. I purchased the homemade turkish eggplant, homemade cous cous, homemade french spinach salad and pickled turnips. When I got home, I opened the lids and fond memories filled my heart and soul. This is how homemade cooking tastes!
