I had my taxes done ALL WRONG by an individual at this office that claimed that they knew how to do split state taxes, WRONG. This individual messed up my taxes so badly, that when I went to get a second opinion because my gut was telling me not to trust the taxes that were filed, the second opinion tax professional looked at me and said "this is embarrassing, I am embarrassed for H&R Block and I am sorry but these HAVE TO get amended." I was in shock, and that started a whole quest to get my taxes amended. In the end I got my taxes amended and done correctly (hopefully), and I am the one who ultimately paid the price. I received no reimbursement or formal apology, despite the fact that my taxes were messed up on all THREE fronts, 2 state taxes and an omission of an important tax document on my federal taxes the first time around. I highly advise that anyone thinking about using this office or this company, look elsewhere. I completed their survey, I contacted their company, and still almost an entire month later no one from this company has contacted me to see what went wrong and what can be done in the future to avoid these situations. It baffles me and disappoints me that a company could care so little about their customers. I don't know about everyone else, but I pay a lot of money to this company each tax season to get my taxes done right, THE FIRST TIME. What is the point of a guarantee if you won't uphold it or at least pretend to care? PEOPLE BEWARE

My particular review is for another matter that I was requested to get advise from a tax specialist. Now that the "fun" part is done with the purchase of D and I's new home, part of my new fun is selling my existing home. To do so there are various fixes that need to be done to make it market ready. I don't have a lot of extra cash but hoped to sell some shares from a Roth I've been contributing to for well over a decade to help pay some of those costs. My mutual fund company is being extra cautious in selling the shares I requested. In a nutshell I can take back money I've contributed (assuming I've contributed for at least 5 years) but not money that was earned. On that end they sent me a list of all my transactions over the decade or so that I've contributed and suggested I talk to a tax specialist and seek their opinion as far as what I can sell. That's where Lafata comes in. I figured I would likely need a tax service in 2017 to help me file both a non-resident Illinois tax form (since for the time being I will continue to work at my company in IL) and a part-year resident Indiana tax form, so why not try to establish a relationship with a specialist now. I called them on the 12th and the receptionist was polite and transferred me to a tax specialist. But the tax specialist was confused on what and why I needed their help. I explained the best I could and finally he asked for my phone number and said he would call back later in the evening since he was currently busy with other customers. That's totally understandable since it is "tax season" now. But as of the 18th no call. The least he could've done was schedule an appointment for me to come over so I could show and explain my situation more clearly. I contacted another tax service and they were just as confused by my request but they did schedule a time for me to stop by and present my information. I have doubts about the other service as well but will reserve judgment for after my appointment.
