When you're told that your ghost tour is going to meet at the square across the street from a…read moreTaphouse, you grab food inside it and savor some incredible beers. It's what you do1 and this led to me discovering just how much of a certifiable beer haven Max's is! For a Philly comparison I'd put Max's on the same caliber as Glory Beer Bar and Kitchen but with a beer bible on the same scale as Monk's. It's been a beer haven for going on four decades and it shows with their 100+ rotating taps, 1000+ bottles & cans, a 4 casks that feature plenty of local Baltimore brews alongside the finest from Belgium, Germany, and then some! They even have seasonal special events like a Sour Beer Fest in June, and a Rare & Obscure Beer Weekend in October. The bar interior was classic food, with a huge main bar that showcased the many brew and spirit options. The bartenders were also spot on with their service and spot on beer suggestions. For food being so close to the waterfront had me craving some seafood, and the rockfish sandwich delivered with its Chesapeake seasoning and remoulade dressing. Each day of the week has a beer special at Max's, and Thursday meant that I was enjoying a discount on full pint cask pours. I liked that Max's had transparent pricing available for 4 oz to large pours and growlers to go on their menu for each and every draft beer, and the 4 oz pours made it easier to enjoy the 11% abv barleywine beer from a Baltimore brewery that I was curious about without feeling some extra inebriated repercussions during my ghost tour. It was extra details like that which had me really enjoying Max's and dubbing it a must visit for any beer lover visiting Baltimore.

Also have a really good variety of NA beers amidst the hundreds of other amazing beers across the globe. Food wise, the chili is really delish as are the wings. Just a good spot to hang your hat for a bit and enjoy the vibes with a nice brew.

Loved their crabby taters - the half size was already a generous portion. Awesome, friendly service! Seems like the staff really enjoy working here and interacting with customers.

We went to Ale Mary's after a big, touristy day in the Inner Harbor (I recently moved back to…read moreBaltimore, and am revisiting a lot of attractions, as a way of orienting myself, so I am still open to more broad kind of places.) We picked this place because it was advertised as a little touristy, and my partner likes tots! This place was great! After slogging around in 93 degree heat, we were ready to have a breather. We came in the early evening on a Sunday. The friendly bartender sat us, after a minute of us looking confusedly around. He and our table server were very jovial and familiar with each other, and made us feel very welcome! I like the decor of the place, because even though the structure is basically Dive Bar Baltimore, they also put in some idiosyncratic touches, like holy water containers near the doors, and cute salt and pepper shakers on every table. We started with the tots trinity, which was great, but we also both thought that next time, we would just get the crabby tots. In fact, I would just order the crab dip in whatever way I could get it! Excellent, unexpected, delicious! The regular tots and ranch cheesy ones were fine, but a little undercooked--if only they had been super hot and browned! My partner had the world's largest greek salad, which he said was very fresh and well balanced, and I had a chopped steak sandwich, which was a special on the menu, and delicious, although--and this is a big deal--the roll was not good. I loved all the flavors of the sandwich, but the bread fell apart before I even picked it up. Our service was great, and accommodating, and they really felt like they were looking out for us (I was walking with a cane, and they made a special effort to fit me in. I substituted Brussels sprouts instead of chips, and that was a champion decision. Soooo good. We had enough leftovers to have another supper the next night. Everyone whom we encountered at Ale Mary's was fun and kind and good at their jobs. Thank you!
