I paid these guys to install a patio cover. Every anchor bolt was anchored in a crack or so close to the edge that a heavy wind could break it lose, which it did! The cover turned into a kite and end up on the roof of my house. I called the owner to come and remove the cover and he charged me for the privilege even though it was their fault that the cover blew off. $1500 dollars in damage to my house and a lose of $4500 for a patio cover that I no longer have. Where do i start with this. This was a horrible experience. First off if you are going to do a project never do it by time and materials. Do it by the job. If not they will nickel and dime you and waste time on a project and not get things done in a timely manner. But this is more than that. This is what happened to me and I have dealt with several contractors for my investments. I believe the owner ,Tom, was the first person to come out to see the project we were going to do at my moms house. Before we started he sent at least 2 to 3 different staff from TC Canyon to do the job. When we finally started it was a different contractor again who I had never met. First thing i noticed is he wanted half up front, which is typical, for the project. This was going to be an interior project in the house and lots of remodeling and renovation. I had a budget of over 28K for the interior of the house. The invoice for the project was 26.5K. Half of that is 13.25K. Well our lender sent him over 14K. Which he asked for and was wrong! Next for the amount of work that was done he wanted over 20K for time and materials and they didn't even complete 30% of what was described on the invoice. Now we did change some things that in my opinion were not that big of a change. Even then i asked for details or the change order so i could see what was changed on the invoice. Tom refused to send that to me stating that these details were not a big change, although according to him it was. I also asked him to send me the hours and dates the contractors were at my moms house. This message was sent via email and he responded that he would. He never did. He complained that i acted like the general manager of the project, which is funny because he sent at least 3 different project managers when we finally started the project. He lied by stating that the first half of the money was only the first half for time and materials. He changed that tune and said it was for the whole project. Photos, videos, and opinions from other licensed contractors don't lie. He still owes me $1,747 dollars for materials' and 2 hours of time at $90 dollars an hour ($180). He never revealed to me how much the contractors were getting per hour to start and when i finally asked him he beat around the bush and said "something like $90 per hour but I don't remember". I sent other contractors over to my moms to give me an estimate on how much work had been done and what would be the cost for that work. I had all 3 contractors say that i was robbed. According to all 3 licensed contractors that saw the job done this far, this job should be from about 7k to 8k, maybe 9k at the most. Even his own subcontractors told me that this was way to much for what was done. First day/s he sent 3 workers. After that was never more than 2 workers at a time. And they only worked from approximately 7am to 5pm Monday through Friday on some days. Other days they went from 7am to 12pm and worked no holidays and weekends. This started in late February and lasted till about middle of April. They did not work all those days either. In fact, while the owner was in Aruba on vacation he sent no one for about 2 weeks. The reason why i know he was on vacation because his secretary and subcontractors mentioned he was on vacation. The majority of the work was done on 2 bathrooms and this was for the studs and framing. And these are not very big bathrooms. They also did some floor joists and about 6 foundation blocks or cement pillars. Three rooms of subflooring about 600sq. ft. in total. And that's it. There is still material at my moms house just sitting out there. This is a fraud and deserves to be called out. I would not recommend this company to anyone! And do not do a time and materials contract! Does anybody have any advice on what action I should take next. Wow! I'm sorry but the lies just mentioned by Tom are ridiculous. I never received hours, the days or any GPS system forms of when his workers were present at the work site. I never asked to be the sub contractor lol thats why I hired his company. I am allowed input in this project because I'm paying for it! Plumbers and electricians were rarely there when his contractors were there. I can get statements from the plumbers and electricians. So the facts are you grossly overcharged (20k) for about 7K to 9K worth of work, did nit send me a copy of the contract you have because the original contract is not over 28K, did not send me your workers hours and days they were at the worksite, did not send me the details that were changed in the original contract, lied about the first half check being only being for the first half of time and materials, and have not responded back to my emails. If you wouldvlike please post the hours and days your workers worked here, along with the original contract, and the details that were changed or the change order. Had them over to re-install a border around my pool that was holding in sand and supporting pavers for the pool frame. I also had them add some railing to the deck leading into the pool for safety reasons and some other deck repairs. When they showed up to my job I had to choose between a border that was either level or a border that could actually hold the sand for the pavers and counter sunk into the ground (like the existing border) or I would be charged a change order for both. Owner showed up once and made a bunch of promises to my wife and I. Admitted he never shared the job notes with his team. Then, he sent text messages to confirm work he would do. He has not delivered on a single promise so far. I was told I needed to self inspect the project, even though he knew it wasn't complete. When I did just that and sent pictures and listed significant issues, I was told I needed to pay the rest of my bill before he would show up and make the corrections calling it warranty work yet,,, told ME to "self inspect". They used trim nails to support the new guard rail and the wood is barley hanging on. I have a laundry list of complaints and the contractor has not reached out to me in weeks. They threatened collections if I didn't pay for this incomplete, unsatisfactory work, yet, they couldn't pass an official inspection if they had to. Don't even get me started on what they did under my deck and the countless text messages with unfulfilled promises to make it right before threatening me with collections. In reply: I lied about nothing, waited weeks to give you the opportunity to make it right. Every picture I posted was of your work. New wood, new work barely attached. I am dying to pay this bill and have the work completed in a craftsmanship like manner and maybe have a professional from your organization actually do the inspection? I don't want to hurt your business. Living up to something from the countless text messages I have from you would be a great start to showing everyone what kind of man YOU are. I am the consumer my friend. I just wanted my job completed and your words fulfilled before I paid. I am ready to talk if you are. I made a request to you several weeks ago and have heard nothing till now. Thanks Tom, any particular reason why you edited your original reply? I just can add to mine so if you had something different to say why edit? Your adjusted reply is appreciated and your original reply already captured. I guess this was much better than calling your customer a cheap liar. The boards you came back to replace were the ones chosen by your guys to replace because you replaced the very same boards once and it wasn't matching wood. ( per your employee ) so you did nothing new that day. During the self inspection YOU requested, I noticed no new joists or hangers. I emailed you to inform you and ask what I got charged for and you replied with "pay your bill and I'll come back" . You are completely deflecting from the fact that the new work on the deck and the new rail leading to the pool are just a small fraction what I am concerned about. Yes, the original deck was not done well. If you couldn't help me to make this better you had an obligation to just turn away the work. Especially if you couldn't make it safe enough. The pool border is equally an issue. Your guys left material buried in the ground causing me even more work and money than the original mess up in making the border bigger in the first place. All after having to give something up in order to have it level and hold in sand. I am not sure why a level installation and an application that meets its intended purpose are unreasonable requests but, you charged me extra for that. As far as the contract goes I asked for hard copies because your portal wasn't working on my end and I could not see the original proposal. I also couldn't see in writing where you made me trade a level border that held sand for the storage I requested. Nothing about the "waived" change orders as you called them and no communication since the request. I am not having difficulty paying the bill. I am having difficulty paying for incomplete, unsatisfactory work. The work from the original estimate clearly changed every time one of your uniformed workers cried change order. You already admitted that you did not pass on the original work scope to your team before installation, but, is it ok if me, your customer actually gets all the info? You can claim I just can't afford to pay my bill and you can assume the amount is the point of contention. Well, I'm here to tell you and all that can read, Once you send me all the things I requested in my last email to you and billing info I requested along with a satisfied contract on your part, I am well suited to pay my final bill. read more
