THOUGHTS ABOUT TEACHING HOUSE: I DO NOT RECOMMEND. I did the part time course on Mondays (530-930p), Wednesdays (530-930p) and every other Friday (530-830p). Students were divided into 2 groups, A & B. Group A taught on Monday, Group B taught on Wednesday. Mon: Brief review of teaching points assigned to students in Group B. Group A does their practice teaching. Group A students write their self-evaluation. Group feedback is given. Wed: Brief review of teaching points assigned to students in Group A. Group B does their practice teaching. Group B students write their self-evaluation. Group feedback is given. Fri: These sessions usually covered upcoming written assignments. The course is divided into 2 segments, each with a different teacher (pre-intermediate (I had Bita Rezaei) and upper-intermediate (Adrienne Radcliff)). Once you complete the first segment, you will have no further access to your first teacher. (I sent an email to Adrienne asking for some clarification on some vague feedback she gave, but she completely ignored my email.) Upon course completion, I had a few questions regarding the criteria used to determine my grade. I emailed Lizzy Adams (the director of the teaching program who sent me my grade) and she replied "the criteria is the criteria. You can file an appeal if you want." I reached out to both teachers asking from some clarification and they both completely ignored my email. After a week, I decided to escalate to Lizzy's boss, James Peaver. Lizzy took 4 days to give me her boss's name. Lizzy seems unable to actually answer direct questions. After an entire month of emails to Lizzy and my teachers, I notified James Peaver. He offered to set up a meeting (M-F of the following week) between me, him, and a trainer. I replied letting him know I was available anytime on Monday or Tuesday and didn't hear back from him for a week. The only time the trainer was available to me with me was 6am my time! I decided instead to notify Cambridge directly about my concerns. They responded to me promptly but referred me back to Teaching House so it wasn't very helpful. The appeals process is basically a joke (they even charge you to file an appeal!) They will hold you to strict rubrics that they don't adhere to themselves. The teachers are not very accessible outside of scheduled hours. One of my teachers, Bita, took 3 days to respond to a question I had about my upcoming teaching plan. They have an elitist attitude (Don't question the CELTA gods!) They are very helpful up until you are paid in full, then they will ignore you or say anything to justify their actions. They will pass just about anyone but only award 2% of students with Pass A. They need to do away with their grading system. They emphasize that it doesn't matter if you earn a Pass, Pass A, or Pass B. If that's the case, why not just have Pass/Fail? (I got a Pass B, btw) There's no accountability - A teacher no-showed, both teachers ignored emails, they did not deliver the job placement services they promised. The website advertises a multitude of available job placement services, however, they are virtually non-existent. We were supposed to receive 3 sessions dedicated solely to job placement (according to Lizzy) but we only received one despite the fact that the teacher cancelled our last class and instructed us to log in 50 minutes later than our scheduled start time during the last 3 weeks. This was all time that could have been used to provide the promised services that we PAID for. There is NO one-to-one sessions with a job advisor. There's basically nothing. Telling me I can teach on Cambly or Preply is not helpful. When I voiced my concerns, they tried to do some damage control by telling me I could email them my resume so they could look it over. That is not enough. They did not deliver what they promised. That's wrong. THOUGHTS ABOUT THE CELTA: The course is mostly self-led. There is coursework on the Moodle platform that you can do at your own pace. You will be assigned "Forum assignments" that will be mostly ignored. I was the only student to complete the forum assignment but never got any feedback from my teacher, Bita. About 80% of the "for additional reading" links referenced at the end of each lesson are broken. Moodle in general is cumbersome and could be organized better. It's also not terribly reliable. The chat feature doesn't always work, for example, so you will have to set up an outside group on Telegram or Text to communicate with your teacher/cohorts. In general, I recommend the CELTA certification. But for your own good, take it somewhere other than Teaching House. read more

I took my CELTA here at Teaching House New York. My tutors were fantastic and the administration staff were very helpful. I would definitely recommend taking your CELTA course here if you can! There are many restaurants around the neighborhood where you can grab food before you have to teach. (Don't eat too heavy though) read more

Robert Palisin is the best instructor. but the system in general is very well-rounded in training you as a creditable and prepared English teacher. Not only pedagogy of the content of each lesson but classroom management, etc. The fact that University of Cambridge sends an interrogator every several weeks to evaluate all the work is a deal sealer. I love British English and the quality of their vernacular is unparalleled, so to have a world renown school in charge of its operation, my education was both rewarding and fulfilling. read more

I just finished 10 weeks of intensive CELTA training. It was hard. Very hard. There were times when I felt like there was no way I would ever pass. But I did. My group and my instructors were absolutely incredible. I made friends that I will keep for the rest of my life. Looking back now I wish I could do it all over again. 10/10 experience. The Sarahs are fantastic (and cute), and Eric is wonderful and very encouraging. If you get the chance, do it. read more

The education probably is good, but the service is terrible. Victoria selectively answers your questions and is extremely impersonal; sending re-introduction emails after you have already been talking to her for a while and ignoring your other emails and concerns. read more

I spent a very intense, but wonderful month here working on getting my CELTA certificate. I learned a lot and I gained a lot from it. Met many interesting people that I still keep in touch with, after almost two years. The location is good, the rooms are clean. Everything is well organized. The instructors were very experienced and knowledgeable. It was not easy at all, but worth every penny and every lost hour of sleep. :D read more

Sarah G is the best instructor, although the 3 other instructors that I had were pretty amazing too. This is definitely very much needed if one wants to do this in the long term unless you have other previous formal teaching training. I will definitely recommend Teaching House. I got my CELTA degree from here a number of months ago, but I did not have a good experience, and neither did my fellow trainees. The majority of my group felt disillusioned about the CELTA and what we had heard and expected. The primary reason was the burnt out trainers. There is a full time CELTA course that goes on during the day, and a part time CELTA course in the evening. Some of the trainers here teach BOTH the full time course all day, AND the evening course. After learning this I was not surprised that our trainer seemed so burnt out and had been a bit weak in giving us support. Near the end of the course one of my classmates even saw our trainer on Facebook during teaching practice (when we are teaching an actual class and the trainer is supposed to be evaluating our lesson). She probably thought no one could see but my classmate saw it from the reflection on the window behind her. To be fair, I still learned a TON and there are definitely great trainers here as well. I spoke with students in other classes who were happy with their trainers. read more

If you are planning to do your CELTA, don't do it anywhere else. Teaching House is centrally located, with excellent staff and knowledgeable trainers, and--the grueling expectations notwithstanding--my month here was far more rewarding than I could've imagined. read more

This review is intended to help those students that for any legitimate reason need to drop the course before it starts or within the first week. The ultimate goal is to force Teaching House to change its punitive policy. FIGHT THE ABUSE!!! The intensive program offered by CELTA is challenging without a doubt. It's not the subject matter that poses the challenge for most, it's the time obligation. Eight to nine hours at the school, travel time to and from, plus, four to six hours of homework can break the enthusiasm of the most committed aspirant. Plus, to make the course even more stressful looms the ever present threat of losing your total tuition amount of $2,495.00 if, for any reason, you can't complete the course - which I personally find criminal! Don't fret . . . there is recourse! Together we can STOP this punitive and abusive policy/practice! (1) You need to hit them on all fronts! Protect yourself by paying for the course with a credit card that provides buyer protection. Put the fact that the school wants to keep your "total" tuition in dispute. Many other schools around the world refund a percentage of tuition depending on how much time you spent with the course, or, they will defer you to a part-time course - which is fair to the student. The fact that you signed a contract which states you will lose your total tuition upon failure to complete the course does protect them to some degree, however, fairness (or a lack there of) is also a compelling factor. Keeping your $2,495.00 and giving "nothing" in return is simply not fair. Also, one cannot truly appreciate the demands of the course unless they experience it first hand - and one size does not fit all! (2) Post as many complaints as possible! On line you'll find the NYS Consumer Protection Board (www.nysconsumer.gov), where you can fill out a consumer complaint form (the school wants to avoid black marks with the state and will negotiate to protect its reputation). Also, post a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. (If you enrolled in different CELTA program in another state, file with that state's consumer protection board etc.). (3) Post your stories to help future CELTA students protect themselves. We as consumers have rights! Students of the world unite! Don't let Teaching House NYC (or any other CELTA program) bully you into believing you have no options. They want to protect their reputation; so they will negotiate (especially with a state's consumer protection board). They also want to avoid pressure from credit card companies! Pressure them in your complaints for 100% percent of your tuition and don't accept anything less than 75% percent. That way you walk away with something which is better than nothing - it's only fair! Most student don't complain and they lose everything . . . the schools are aware of this and they take full advantage of it by factoring it into their profits! STAND UP . . . GET UP . . . DON'T GIVE UP THE FIGHT!!! read more
