I was in the advanced level and was told that I don't need it anymore, but I knew that wasn't true because Americans did not understand me always, or I couldn't understand them. And it was finally when I attended Global ESL Academy that I felt an improvement in my English. I even learned the rules for comma usage and realized that all the emails I had sent so far were full of mistakes. I took an advanced intermediate 10-week French course with JP, and it was a great learning opportunity. Whenever I learn a new language, my biggest fear is to actually speak the language because I am afraid that my counterpart wouldn't understand me, and if he/she doesn't, I wouldn't know how else to explain my ideas without speaking English. Not only is JP very approachable and friendly, but JP is also a very professionally qualified instructor (as he also teaches some French classes at NYU) and can immediately detect what you are trying to say and offers you with better ways (i.e. how natives would say) to express your ideas. JP sincerely wants to get to know everyone as much as he can and follows up with you so that he can be of help if you intend to continue to improve your language skills. There was no real evaluation, just an online quiz, and when I arrived in the class, I quickly realized after a few sessions that it didn't match my needs at all. The class was pure conversation with no grammar explanations, no structure, and no rules, which made me feel completely lost. I actually needed more grammar-focused support, not just conversation. When I tried to switch levels, I wasn't offered a proper solution. Instead, I was only given about 70% credit for my remaining classes, with a two-month expiration. I couldn't use it because I was traveling, and their response time was slow, so the credit essentially became useless. Overall, I was disappointed with how the placement was handled and how inflexible the school was in helping me find the right level. I expected a more supportive and structured experience.

Most importantly I actually _understand why_ I'm saying things. She manages to distill grammar, conjugation, and other technical bits of the language into easy to swallow lessons. Before starting with Sylvie I tried Rosetta Stone and Duolingo, they're great, but nothing beats learning French from a native speaker, I've picked up fun colloquialisms I'd never get from Rosetta Stone. Sylvie has definitely honed her teaching style over the years. Her lessons are well structured to take you from absolute beginner to advanced. If you want to really learn French, talk with Sylvie!
