I had never even heard about this place until I attended a birthday party here. They are doing…read moremajor construction on the street in front of the shop, so you have to get to it from the back street, which works out better anyway because that is where the private parking lot is anyway. The private lot has a decent amount of spots available. There is also street parking available within a reasonable walking distance. You can enter the shop through the back door through the parking lot or the front door. You can make neat wood signs here at the shop, using personalized stencils that they make for you. The signs are the quality that you would buy at a store such as the "Good Vibes Only" signs. They supply the wood, the stain, the paint, the stencil, gloves and aprons. The first thing that you do is stain the wood with the stain of your choice, then they place the stencil on the wood. After the stencil is placed on the wood, you paint (dab) over it, once it is painted to your liking you remove the stencil, the staff does any needed touch ups and then they let it dry. It is easy peasy. My 7 year old had no problem making her sign. They host bridal parties, corporate events, bachelorette parties, graduation parties, and of course, birthday parties. They also offer PYP (Pick Your Project), Specialty Workshops, and DIY Take home kits. The shop has adult and regular drinks available to sip on while you are making your masterpiece and a couple of tables with chairs outside on the sidewalk to sit and lounge. They call it sip and paint. The staff there was very friendly, patient and helpful. The were truly amazing and dedicated to making sure that everyone had a great time and made their masterpiece that they envisioned. All the party's attendees did have a great time. I am glad that I was able to check this place out. I highly recommend this shop. It is a nice and unique activity and the staff pushes it to a five star place and it is well worth checking out.

The first 45 minutes to an hour is a guided instruction, then the last hour we are free to throw our other 2 balls of clay with the help of the instructor whenever we needed her. I was hanging out in the Beech Grove area today for a bit of a change of pace. I have a long…read moreweekend for Memorial Day, and I decided to try to visit some "new to me" businesses. I was wheeling on Main Street when Beech Grove Clay Works caught my eye. This is a storefront directly on Main Street. As you might guess, it's a ceramics studio. It's an adult community ceramics studio where members enjoy access to "instructional classes at all experience levels." They have as much as 40+ hours of open studio time a week - however, it's worth noting they do not offer walk-in classes or studio time. All classes are scheduled in advance, and only paid members can participate in the open studio times. There's a front gallery space, my primary interest today, where you can buy local and support indie artists. I saw everything from refrigerator magnets to kitchen wares to decor to quite a bit more. It was really quite impressive. The class and studio area is visible from the gallery, and it's also a quite impressive space. The front entryway is accessible, not always true in Beech Grove, and I was acknowledged when I entered. I believe the owner was in conversation with someone - perhaps a potential member or someone for an event - and I waited patiently for my turn while checking out the gallery. I stuck around 15-20 minutes. My turn never came. I'd grown interested in a couple items, however, I had some questions (including price, as these items were out of my reach). After waiting what felt like a reasonable time, I finally left without further acknowledgement and without a purchase. Buying local is wonderful, but that doesn't negate the requirement that you actually serve the customer. I'm actually pretty low maintenance, but if I'm not served I don't buy. Pretty simple. So, cool shop. Cool gallery. Great concept. Needs some work in the area of customer service. I may or may not be back.

The gentleman walked away didn't say anything but he grabbed a box top for I assume the plants. As he gets back a lady comes who I assume is a regular places her plant while I'm standing there with my wallet, he starts speaking to her and they hold a conversation and he moves the payment tap near her as I look I was thinking this entire time he was ringing me up but she pays they finish their conversation as she leaves he then gets the lid he originally grabbed and at that time I pick up the plants he sighs and says " still shopping" I said no not at all I place them back in their places and left. I'm huge in customer service now I won't make a fuss but I will politely leave and never return.

As someone with a disability who is also a creative, there's no question I resonate with ArtMix's…read moremission to transform the lives of people with and without disabilities through the creation of art. ArtMix is an Indianapolis-based non-profit organization that has been in existence since I was a kid in school, though it began life as Very Special Arts. They have four core programs, a variety of special projects, and quite a few opportunities to support them ranging from visiting their art gallery to joining them for First Fridays and others. As they note on their website, in the early days of public education for those with disabilities it was uncommon for us to be integrated into regular classrooms. An organization like this was used to fill in that gap. While I was often discouraged from creativity, this was an organization that encouraged it. The fact that I'm now a published writer, film critic, producer, and occasional actor is proof positive of how positive their influence can be. It should be noted that shopping in their gallery is by appointment only. Like a lot of non-profits, they have a small staff. The core programs for ArtMix include urban artisans, entrepreneur artisans, community classes, and artists-in-residence. In terms of accessibility, despite being in a challenging building they do well with ramps at the back entrance (and free parking in the back lot). The building itself is locked - there's a call box that you'll use (again, they request appointments). First Friday events are cool, the gallery is wonderful (and does support artists with disabilities. Yay.). I'm very pleased with this organization. It's only gotten better over the years. While I'm no longer that student sitting in a classroom, ArtMix reaches out even more these days and is truly a community organization. If you've never checked them out, I definitely recommend it.
