SHADY GYM. You have fair warning. I trained here for 6 months and I do not recommend team tooke for either children or adults. There are several other fantastic Jiu-Jitsu/MMA Teams nearby. I learned some martial arts but it was very expensive and not worth the injuries that I received from training with angry team members there. I started at Team Tooke a year and a half ago on my 50th birthday. My experience with Travis Tooke's team has been nothing but extraordinary. Although I have competed in a tournament, I was not pressured into it. I competed to test myself and plan to do it again if I am able. I have been a student of professor Travis for almost a year now. I can tell you firsthand coming from a different affiliation and school that this school is unmatched in my opinion. This is my favorite place to train while I'm in Houston visiting my Uncle. Travis is a real BJJ black belt and his skills are competition verified. They also have a good MMA and Muay Thai program. We've been members of Team Tooke for over 2 years. My son is 7 years old and has a blast at Team Tooke. His first coach, Cameron, is amazing with the children, and all around a very sweet and wonderful person. Here's the deal with the guys. I did a year long (because that's the contract they make you sign--more on that in a minute) at Team Tooke and here's what I wished I had known before I signed up: First, know that these guys are all about the money. The first time you walk in the door they are going to hard sell you to get you to sign up right then and there or threaten to raise prices on you tomorrow. Even if you sign up right there, it's expensive--you're going to be paying $250/month for the next year and that's just for one kind of martial arts. Want to do Muay Thai AND Jiu Jitsu? It's going to be more like $400. Not to mention they are going to hard sell you on gear too. Oh and by the way, there's no month-to-month when you first start, they commit you to a year. Already a bad sign for a martial arts studio. Then, every sessions you attend thereafter, they will try to up-sell you on all kinds of stuff. Every time there is a holiday, they invite you to their overpriced party (like $30 a head in some cases for hot dogs). Or maybe next time is a happy hour. Or maybe they bring in some MMA guy to do a seminar for $200. Want to join their "Leadership Program"? You're going to spend a few hundred dollars to go through instructor training so that you can help them out during practice. It's always something these guys are trying to sell you on and believe me their margin is unreal. Second, the training is decent. It's not amazing and it's not crap either. When you show up, they will be attentive (for the most part) and you will learn some good stuff. They also have some guys floating around that are pretty serious about MMA and have some good experience. But you should know that anything other than Jiu Jitsu take a backseat at this gym. Period. That's just how it is. Tooke is a big time Jiu Jitsu guy and that's what they are going for. Their Muay Thai is pretty good, but they put way more attention on the Jiu Jitsu and it shows. If you want a more well rounded MMA experience look elsewhere. Also, these guys are not about self defense per se. What I mean by that, is they are going to train you for the ring, not the street. If you want a true self defense where they teach how to defend yourself against an aggressor or someone with a weapon, look elsewhere. Third, most of the people that have posted reviews here and elsewhere were asked to by the coaches. I witnessed them do that on multiple occasions. Know that you are seeing a biased account on all these reviews. All in all, this place is way over priced and I would not recommend it. The constant up-selling and greed was enough to turn me off. Look elsewhere and you will save some money and probably get some better training too. read more

I recently started Muay Thai at Team Tooke. The coaches are very encouraging and welcoming.

We are fairly new to Team Tooke, but so far have had a great experience! When we first met with Coach JP, he was very professional and respectful. He wanted to see why we were interested in signing our son up for BJJ and explained to us that it wasn't just about teaching BJJ techniques. They also stress the importance of teaching them respect, discipline, self-confidence, fun etc. He explained everything thoroughly and was patient in answering all of our questions. He did a one-on-one that day with our son to introduce him to some basic concepts and even showed him a fun "take-down" technique which peaked his interest, because what kid doesn't like to throw down! :) Coach Cameron, who is the Little Champs coach, is so great with the kids! Although, it is a fairly large class, he does great in keeping them engaged and focused (as focused as 4-6 year olds can be!). He speaks loudly, clearly and gives step-by-step instructions that's appropriate to their level. He's very intentional to greet both the parents and students as they come in with a handshake and he cares to remember the students' names! A huge plus, especially when one of the things they are trying to teach is self-confidence. Overall, the classes have been instructional and fun to watch. My only suggestion would be to maybe have more assistant coaches since the class is pretty large. Sometimes, some of the students (mine included lol) tend to get silly and there's not enough coaches to get them back on track. Other than that, everything has been a positive experience and the coaches/staff show that they care about their students. I would recommend you come check them out! read more

Oksana is right, the 30 day trial is to get you in the door. Then they will tell you how great the place is and that most ppl dont even do the trial. Why would you not do the trial its free 30 days?! DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS PLACE!! The training is not worth $205 a month, if you are a beginner go somewhere else learn the basics and get your belts. Then if you are experienced enough and want to train with travis tooke then the $205 is worth it to some ppl. I am in a stand still with canceling my contract, I called two weeks ago and they said someone from accounting will get with you... never happened. I am having to contact my bank to refuse any further withdraws from my account. This is sad ppl, if you want good training you do not have to sign a contract they are only out for money! Coach Cameron is FANTASTIC with the kids - I'm impressed at each class how well he keeps a rowdy group of youngsters focused and engaged, and how much they learn. I love this place! It's the BEST martial arts facility I have ever been to, hands down. Family oriented (no cursing, respectful, etc.), but it's not wimpy and cheesy like many family oriented places. The boxing and Muay Thai classes are really fun as well. They have an awesome kids class and summer camp.
