Closest beach to houston with a fishing pier . They support the military by allowing allow free entrance to the pier. Otherwise $4 all day per person. Great place to walk or catch and release. We saw flying Gish, dolphins and cat fish from the pier. Nice relaxing place to drive a short distance from Houston and definitely worth the sunrises have seen during some of the triathlons have done from the very area we went to walk. read more

Me and my girlfriend loved this beach very much. It remind us a little bit of our Balboa Beach in Orange County California back home. Except, they do not have a nice little city park coinciding with this beach here. Nice little playground for children. Never see too many beaches like these. Beautiful beach, very calm and family friendly. It's small but it's never too crowded unless it peek time summer in the weekends but you will always find a spot. You park close to the beach and there is a playground for kids and some sitting benches around the place. You can fish, swim, walk, have a bbq. A small bathroom and clean water showers outside to clean up after a swim. 8 am to ~ 6 or 8 pm (sunset) because jellyfish start coming up once the sun sets. would recommend 100%. read more

Sylvan Beach Park is a 32 acre Harris County Park that is the perfect getaway to experience a beach away from driving all the way to the Galveston coast. The park features a playground for children, multiple sitting benches, and a few small, sandy beaches. There is plenty of parking available. It is evident that seagulls also love this area, and there are quite a few benches with bird feces on them. We were disappointed to find that the pier is currently closed (as of November 2021) due to damage. Overall a great place to spend a few hours. We were hoping to catch the sunset, but the park itself is actually facing the east. It would be a great spot to watch a sunrise. read more

The pier at Sylvan Beach has been closed and the city or county does not have money to repair it and according to a fisherman there it uses all wooden piers and lumber instead of concrete piers and concrete boarding which would prevent it from rotting and being out of service for the public, November 11th 2024 the pier was blocked off to the public! The fisherman who lived there in the port says there is no money to properly repair the pier for the public or upgrade it to concrete? read more

I come here with my friend once a week. We pick up some food and head to Sylvan Beach to eat and catch up. We love to sit near the water, enjoy the breeze, watch the birds, watch the ships, watch other people lol, and just discuss everything! We typically stay for hours so it's nice that they have bathrooms and trash cans in multiple locations. There's always police parked in the parking lot, so I guess they're patrolling. ‍ I've never seen anybody have any trouble, so that's comforting. They have benches in the sand Far enough away from the water that you won't get wet if you just want to put your feet in the sand. It's a really pleasant place to be. read more

Great place to fish, bbq, have your kids run around a fancy playground, or skateboard. No matter what kind of activity you are into, you can find it here. Swimming here is a little iffy and dangerous even, but other than that it's all good. Great location close to Pasadena, my son loves the skate park and my daughter loves the trees and picnic tables. Get outdoors, just do it, way better than staying on the couch. read more

Nice beach park and I feel this beach is specifically great for families. There's fishing, a big playground for the kids, they rope off the water so you can't go past a certain section where it's too deep. The only gripe I have about this beach is the trash and debris floating in the water and on the actual beach. Other than that it's closer than a commute to Galveston and great for kids. read more

Sylvan Beach Park is not the beach I imagine. I was imagining a bigger beach with pretty blue or emerald green water. However, I snapped out of my dream quickly when I laid eyes on nothing but dirty looking brown water. I was even more shocked to see all the kids playing and swimming in it. I wasn't even going to let my pinky toe touch it. However, the water is safe to swim. The bodies of water flowing into the Gulf of Mexico near Galveston are mud bottomed. It is caused by the silt washing down the Mississippi that gets pushed by Gulf currents along the shoreline to Galveston. Nevertheless, Sylvan Beach Park is a good place to take your family. There's a nice pier to fish off of or to just stroll down. A walking and bike trail, Picnic area, play area for kids, and there's plenty of space for parking. read more

This park was named after the famous author Sylvan Plath. If you didn't live in the area you probably wouldn't know that this beautiful park right by the water exists. If you can get over the gorgeous view of all the oil rigs out in the Gulf, then it's a really lovely place to bring your family and relax. It gets a little hot and busy in the summer, but for the rest of the Year this place can be very pleasant,2 when it's not being flooded by rain. read more

A small beach not too far from Houston. No alcohol allowed, signs everywhere to remind you. There are playgrounds, restrooms, a fishing pier, and spacious parking lots. Avoid coming here on a holiday because it can get quite crowded. However, you can always come early in the morning for a good parking space. We arrived early around 9AM on Easter Sunday and decided to set up a tent on the grass, right in front of where we parked. A great view of the beach. Good thing that the weather was nice in the midst of April. Around noon is when it gets really crowded with more families arriving. This beach park is an ideal place for BBQ with family and friends. One thing though, the beach itself isn't that big and you're not allowed to go further out into the water. The water was a bit cold in April but you will get used to the water after a while. The weather may have been nice but the sun was out all day. So, make sure you put on lots of sunscreen because I got a horrible sunburn afterward and so did everyone from my party. Texas weather don't play. Since it was the holiday, it was ridiculously crowded, mostly with children in the water. Now, speaking of the water, don't expect to see crystal clear blue water at a Texas beach. Thus, the water at this beach was good enough. Relatively clean for most part. Also, restrooms were somewhat clean but there was one heck of a line at the women's restroom. There were 4 restroom stalls, one without a proper lock. There was also no soap and toilet papers in any of the stalls but miraculously, there was someone with toilet paper. On the other hand, there was no line at the men's restroom. Overall, not bad of a beach. read more

Recently I took a trip to Houston and decided to spend the day at Sylvan Beach. The sand is white and the water is not bad, cleaner than some I've seen along the coast. Like someone mentioned before, it might have some jellyfish (husband got stung by a small one). I recommend bringing umbrellas and chairs if you want to be close to the beach since you can't put the canopy close by. Bring snacks water and slather in sunblock, it gets really hot, I mean it's Texas y'all! Alcohol and glass bottles are not allowed. Pets need to be on a leash and cannot be going back and forth into the water. There's police patrolling the area and they WILL let you know! If you want to go to the pier, its 4$. It's a nice view and you can spend some time fishing. My family and I really enjoyed our time at the beach, it does the job if you need to get your beach fix! read more

This is a great get away for us. Just sitting in the car drinking a drink, eating a snack and looking out to the water. This was a very clean beach with a very long pier. There were many fishing off the pier. The only thing there were more off than fishermen were the number of birds. We found the birds to being aggressive when they sensed or saw us eating food. I had to close our car windows some before any of the birds would get inside as we were having a snack. Then again maybe they were upset because we were eating fried chicken. Maybe they recognized a cousin we were eating. That may explain why it looked like a scene from the movie The Birds. We will be back and will give an update some time soon. read more

I was born in a country surrounded by beautiful beaches, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that I just LOVE the beach! I was not aware that there was a beach near my job and I am grateful that someone mentioned there is actually a beach in La Porte, Texas! So, I had a stressful week and after a super busy weekend decided to go to the Sylvan Beach after work. One of my coworkers joined me. We got our bathing suits on and crossed Fairmont to our destination. I did not know what to expect, but my expectations were low... (lol). The beach looks man-made and the sand is pretty heavy. It reminds me of the sand in Ostia Antica, Italy except a lighter color. The beach is small but if it is beach you want, it is beach you get! When we got there, there must have been at least 50 kids in the water! (not the only reason I didn't get in!). I wouldn't call it beautiful, but it is definitely a great alternative to driving all the way to Galveston. We had a very relaxing time at Sylvan and decided to go back in a few weeks for a picnic. The ocean, or more specifically the beach just has a very calming effect on me. If you just want to lay in the sun and Relax, without having to drive an hour then you've found your destination. read more

Small town relaxing getaway with several playgrounds, restrooms, picnic tables, green grassy areas, lifeguards, small sandy beach areas and bait shop. It even has a clean, long fishing pier. Beach and water are calm which is great for young kids. Sadly like most of the gulf coast around Houston it is swarmed with small jellyfish. We saw them before getting stung but it does make it hard for children to enjoy the water when they can't get in. The facilities were tidy but old. The showers are not usable. They are on the edge of the beach but the handles have been removed so you can't actually rinse off. The playground though is an A+, we headed up there after getting tired of being careful in the water. The kids loved it. It's covered and definitely has been updated within the past couple years. read more

I grew up here, so I wish I could give a better review than this... Back before this was a beach it was a calm area to view the water and fish. Now it is an overpopulated, trash infested location. Not that it is the cities fault, but the amount of people who garbage, used diapers, etc.. you name it, and let their kids act really poorly really makes this place lose a lot of it's charm.They require a large cleaning crew to keep the place decent. Whatever happened to Texas law on littering? The water itself is port water, and not very clean. If you do swim, do try to rinse off quickly, as there has been reports of flesh eating bacteria not far from here. (I know that's not what you want to read before going swimming) It costs money to use the dock now. Many do not notice the sign saying that and get "SCREAMED" at by a radio operator watching the camera. Afterward expect the police to harass you a bit. I watched this happen twice in one day to people from out of town. Have fun! Dock did not always have this fee, nor poor vibes. I guess that weeds out the amount using it, but it's just not the same place that it used to be. Also prepare for a LOT of constable patrols. There have been a few "incidents" in the area and they are on every corner, and not necessarily very nice. The local police are a lot better... but come on Laporte, you can do better. I went back today eager to spend some time on the beach. My expectations weren't met. That's why I'm updating my review. Last time I was there I didn't get out and walk around bc of the rain. This time I did walk around. I was surprised how small the beach area is!!! And I was sad to see all the trash on the shore. The birds were going through the trash and flying off with pieces. They'll get sick eating the random pieces of plastic and garbage. :( Pros- playground, easy parking, pier for fishing, snow cone shop, Great for families with little kids and babies, the sand is soft and the sound of ocean waves is the best! Nice beach area, huge playground for kiddos, clean benches and pavilions to enjoy a lunch or just the breeze. The 51st Annual Sylvan Beach Festival and Crawfish Jam is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2007 at the historic Sylvan Beach Park on lovely Galveston Bay. My review of Sylvan Beach is strictly from a photographers view. It is one of my favorite places to shoot in the SE area of town. There is greenery along with the pavilion which provides a nice background. The sandy beach has been great for pirate shoots. The open ocean was the background for a engagement shoot, senior shoot and family shoot to name a few. It gets crowded in the day and late evening on the weekends so I prefer to shoot here early morning. read more

Sylvan Beach is a great beach. However, maintenance needs to improve. There are showers for the public, but none of them work. They have been out of order since last year, and they don't care to fix them. If Sylvan Beach doesn't have enough funds to fix the showers, maybe Sylvan Beach should charge a few dollars for parking. read more
