I was crushed to learn there isn't a cat cafe in Puerto Vallarta, but then I discovered PuRR…read moreProject. Turns out, it's more than possible to get your feline fix in PV! PuRR Project is a no-kill cat sanctuary on the outskirts of El Porvenir that is home to over 200 cats. If that isn't wonderful enough, they also organize shelter visits, adoption events, spay/neuter clinics, and many fun social events to promote and support their amazing work.
While you may be in Puerto Vallarta for vacation, I guarantee you will happily abandon the beach for an excursion to PuRR Project. Shelter visits are held twice monthly from November to April and cost a mere 400 pesos, which goes toward the shelter's expenses. As soon as I saw there was one scheduled during my time in PV, I emailed the organizer to reserve a coveted spot. There was no way I was missing out on this!
My morning at PuRR Project was, in a word, spectacular. I took an early morning bus downtown then made my way to Plaza Romy where I met up with volunteers Brenda and Glenda and four fellow cat enthusiasts. We were a smaller group than usual, so we all piled into one SUV and then immediately kicked off our journey to the ranch! As a bonus, you will absolutely enjoy the lovely scenery and lively cat talk along the way.
Nothing can prepare you for your arrival at PuRR Project. The moment we pulled up to the gate, we were greeted by a three dozen strong kitty welcoming committee. Get ready to give out plenty of treats and scritches! As we explored the ranch, it was heartwarming to see so many cats living harmoniously together. And they are all so friendly and well-adjusted! In addition to the free-roaming residents, there are several casitas for groups such as kittens, seniors, and special needs cats that need to live indoors. As the saying goes, it takes a village, and the on-site staff and volunteers are doing a remarkable job caring for these cats.
As a tourist, I was only able to have a short but sweet experience, so if you're local you need to get involved with this remarkable organization. Volunteers are the lifeblood of every non-profit and your help will go a long way. What can be more fulfilling than playing a part in keeping a plethora of cats happy and healthy? PuRR Project is providing such essential services to the cats of greater Puerto Vallarta, and I wish them continued success in their endeavor.
