Please do yourself a favor and do not waste your time or money going to this place under any circumstances. I brought my computer here to be fixed since it would not turn on, and when it did the battery sign on my screen showed up with an X instead of a percentage. The customer service is a whole problem within itself, usually only having 1-2 people working at a time on "consultations" with customers for 20+ minutes each without acknowledging anyone waiting to be serviced, and stopping to answer lengthy phone calls as they go. My computer was here being "repaired" for 2 WEEKS and they never contacted me to let me know my computer was done, I had to repeatedly call to ask for updated information. Once I finally come in to pick it up I ask to buy a charger since my old one was broken, and the man working plugs one in for me to buy, saying that he wants to make sure it's working...this seemed odd since he was planning on charging me $80 for an apple charger without the box and he seemed unsure it would work? And sure enough when my computer turned on the X on the charge was still there... 2 WEEKS in the shop and they didn't fix the one thing I had brought it in for, and yet said it was ready for me to pick up. I asked them why this happened and they said there was a "miscommunication" about what was to be fixed, which is complete BS. They also said that there was evidence of liquid damage on my battery, and had written it down in the file on my computer, but in the entire two weeks they had it they never contacted me to ask if I wanted this fixed and put my computer with the rest that were finished for me to pick up??? The man there was extremely rude when I questioned him why this would happen and even walked up and interrupted me on the phone to correct what I was explaining to my mom about what had happened to my computer, who had driven me to pick it up. I brought my computer to a different repair shop and found out there was ZERO liquid damage to my computer, and they had the battery problem fixed within 3 HOURS. Now I have my computer back and there is something wrong with my keyboard reading the buttons I press...causing me to not be able to use my volume or brightness buttons correctly which no doubt happened when the people at tech smiths haphazardly took my computer apart and put it back together incorrectly. I would not waste more of my time writing this lengthy review if it was not in the best interest of anyone reading this to AVOID THIS PLACE at all costs. This is a great local business, personal service, highly competent and highly reliable. I've had several really excellent experiences with Tech Smiths. On one occasion my MacBook Pro crashed and burned and I had some documents that I really needed that I had not yet backed up. Turned out I needed a new hard drive, fortunately it was still under warranty. They took care of everything and recovered my files. On another recent visit I had problems with a iPad. They don't work on iPads but they gave me advice which allowed me to get a perfect repair from Apple. read more

When I spilled water on my laptop I thought that it, and I, was done for. When I took it to the Albany Apple Store, the "geniuses" there told me the spill was basically a death sentence, and the only option they gave me was a blanket $1240 quote that they made clear would be better applied to a new laptop -- basically a sales pitch, upsell, with no diagnostic. As a last resort I brought my wounded machine here, and to my amazement Brian got it working good as new, and for a fraction of Apple's quoted minimum repair cost. The man is a wizard, a true star. We paid $200 to go to the front of the line--to meet a deadline-- but we didn't get our computer back till 8 days later--$200 wasted-- the problem was a defective MLB-- and it was under warranty-- but we were charged for Tech Smiths to replace the MLB--outrageous-- we wound up paying around $355-- to repair a machine whose problems were NOT OUR FAULT & EVEN THOUGH THE MACHINE WAS UNDER WARRANTY-- as I say, outrageous-- we're going to complain directly to Apple-- read more

Best service experience of the year. Thought I'd lost my 2010 MacBook Pro forever but they saved it. Did so at the lowest cost price to me they could. Almost like those days when a great mechanic would check out your car and say don't worry you'll be alright and then not charge you unnecessarily. Amazing experience today at Tech Smiths to fix my mac book air! Computer would not start yet curser was on black screen. Michael knew exactly what to do to fix it in 5 minutes and only $25!! Lovely guy with killer blue eyes who knows his Mac stuff, super great customer service. This was after the worst experience around the corner at Brain storm. I found out about this place from my mother who also takes her mac to them for repairs. Professional, knowledgeable, fast and highly skilled. Matt replaced the hard drive in my 2009 macbook pro, retrieved all of my files, music, etc in about two days. Computer is working better than it has in years. I live in NYC where there are repair services everywhere, I will not take my computer anywhere other than Tech Smiths. Could not be more pleased. read more

Brought my MacBook Air in on Wednesday to get the hinge repaired. During the consultation I was quoted for best case which was tightening the display and was also told the worst case which was replacing the display. They were able to repair the hinge in a day and I was charged half an hour of labor. My MBA is back in working order. Great local business but I do think the labor cost per hour is high, but that is associated with Apple repairs out of warranty. Overall positive experience read more

I have a MacBook Pro that was gracefully aging when it decided to hold a music CD hostage in its optical drive. Apple support pointed me in Tech Smiths' direction and they removed it right at the counter. Shortly after the smart drive signaled it was about to fail. Back to Tech Smiths I went. Their shop is as hip as an Apple store with a more laid back, personal approach. When you have a computer problem these friendly folks can ease the pain. read more

From the date I purchased my beloved Black MacBook to the present, I never had a problem.... until... last week, when my computer froze and wouldn't start up. OHHHHHHH NOOOOOO... I had always meant to get a back up for my hard drive, really... but oh nooooo... I have a buddy who works at the Apple store in Albany who gave me the lowdown of what he suspected and the cost... rather than drive all the way up there, I found Tech Smiths on the Mac web site. I figured it would be worth a shot to try them first. From the moment I arrived and dropped of my precious MacBook to the moment I picked it up, the staff was HONEST, super cool and SAVED the data off my hard drive for way less $$$ than what my Apple Store friend claimed it would cost. Not only did they sort me out with solid advice and service, they obtained a new FREE keyboard cover thing which was covered by Apple... and put the latest operating software in for me for a nominal fee. The guys were awesome, compassionate and well versed in the ways of an apple user. I hope I never need them again, but I'm so GLAD to know where they are should anything like this happen to me again. Luke at Tech Smiths is a true Genius on the Mac. After The Danbury genius bar tech told me it would cost $700 to get a cheap CD out of my computer, that they would have to replace the entire keyboard frame to do it, Luke had it out in seconds flat. Then he fixed my blinking question mark problem ( I was totally prepared for a big cost for that fix if it was even possible) in minutes by replacing a cable that was covered by warranty. I'm done with the 'genius' bar and am heading to Kingston for any other issues. That's where the real Mac genius works! read more

On 12-17-2014 we walked into the store with our Mac. They were unable to run a test because we need a new housing, top case and key board. I was told they would order these parts for me and then call me so that I could drive another hour to Kingston and drop off the computer for an hour and a half. They would repair the computer and I would pick it up. In the space of two weeks, they said they would have the part in and my computer would be fixed. Fifteen days later, I called and I was told there was a mis communication and that this was not the way they did business. When I explained this was what I was told by them, I was told to take my business elsewhere. So, I did just that and I am glad because if this is the way they treat their customers, I can only imagine what they the do to the computers they say they can fix. When I went to a real apple store, there were five other parts that need to be replaced. REALLY glad I went to a professional. What a waste of time Tech Smith was. read more
