Fantastic place! Good politics (worker-owned and free-software-friendly), willing to engage with customers at any level of technical sophistication, and, as far as I can tell, exceedingly competent. And they deal totally honestly. I was having a couple of minor but annoying problems with my Ubuntu machine, and when I saw that BTC was having a Free Tech Support Day to drum up business, I brought it in. In particular, the battery would only charge when the machine was off. Yochai took a look, as I explained what I had done, and he listened very carefully and--when I asked--explained each of the shell commands he was using to poke around. Eventually he concluded that it was probably a hardware problem--they would try yanking the battery and putting it back in. This was an ultrabook, so it would have been hard to do myself. It wasn't worth it to me to give up my laptop for the weekend, but Yochai happily volunteered to take care of it that very afternoon. Bear in mind he was doing so for free! And, indeed, I had my machine back in just a couple hours, with the charging issue permanently repaired. I later brought in a broken Windows Phone, which they agreed to take a look at. After taking it apart and putting it back together, their conclusion was that the motherboard was shot and it was hopeless, so they gave me the phone back and didn't charge me a dime. My computer hard drive crashed, and the apple store's recommended service was a mail-in, multi thousand dollar solution. I did some research on my own and found this place. Not only did everyone who helped me take the time to really stop and explain what they were doing, they also did it in layman's terms! Also, the pricing can't be beat, at only a few hundred instead of a few thousand, and a guarantee that if the data recovery failed, there was no charge at all. Not only did the data recovery succeed, they were able to do something called disk imaging instead of the more arduous recovery, so they actually saved me 100$ from their initial estimate. With their advice, I actually reinvested that money into some RAM to help my computer process faster (or something, I'm still a little vague on the details), but essentially I got a faster, better computer back while staying within my very small college budget. I think that the real way you know when a company really has their customers best interest at heart is when they genuinely work to save you money, and when they go the extra step whenever they can. For example, I had a missing screw for the bottom part of my computer, and they went and found an extra screw to replace it. Our first experience with Boston Tech Collective was actually with our printer. I was ready to throw the whole thing in the trash, when one of their technicians happened to have stopped by on another issue. They repaired my printer free of charge, spending over an hour to do so, and saved me hundreds of dollars in buying a new printer. Since then we have hired Boston Tech Collective as our primary IT company. All my friends said great things about Boston TechCollective in Teele Square. In fact, when I took my laptop in for help, I saw somebody I knew picking up her computer. The laptop was taking forever to boot up, and Matt and Brian figured out it was searching for a (defective) battery. Once they removed the battery, it booted right up...and they cleaned up some unnecessary programs for me while they were in there, for just the diagnostics fee. I had a problem with webpages intermittently not loading. Joe came to the house and found that the wifi and the cable network were interfering with each other. Once he switched off the wifi connection, the problem disappeared. And an admission: I took my laptop in because the webcam was showing my image all blurred out, like a ghost of myself. They did the obvious--cleaned schmutz off the lens--and there I was, all clear (except for the egg on my face). They didn't charge me for it, either. I was SO helped by the Boston TechCollective! I am pretty illiterate when it comes to computer stuff, and needed a wireless computer set up in my new office. I could not use the software CD because my computer did not have a disc drive. Not only did Yochai email me back immediately after I sent my distress message to the company, but he came to the office the next day and set everything up, explained everything to me, and even boosted our wireless protection (which we did not know was weak). He explained things to me patiently and clearly. The hamsters in my laptop had suddenly decided to take an extended lunch break even though they had been running at top speed just hours before... Lazy little nuggets... Anyway, I rushed my now taciturn (i.e., dormant, virtually non-working) laptop to these guys and couldn't have asked for a better experience (well, other than them telling me my 5 year computer was in perfect health). Yochai spent 10 quick minutes diagnosing things and determined that the motherboard was dead (no hamster skeletons though...They must have skipped town to hamster Boca to retire in fashion). In exchange, I did not get charged and received great advice on what I should look for in a new laptop based on my computing habits. These guys are super professional, knowledgeable, fair, quick, and convenient! My laptop keyboard had some non-functional keys from being out in the cold for a long time. Brian first tried to do a thorough cleaning in an attempt to save me the repair, but alas those stubborn n, b, spacebar, and enter keys were fucked. He worked with me to find a convenient time to bring it in to minimize the time I had to live without my machine (as I use it heavily for both personal and professional use.) These guys are great! They are really nice and they do a great job! I broke my macbook screen and literally called to every computer repair store that I found on Yelp. I spent hours and ended up figuring out that most of them could not tell me how much it would cost to fix it, and some others were charging a extremely high price. However, when I called Boston Tech Collective Matt told me how much it would cost right away (a really affordable price), and that I just had had to bring my computer in that they could fix it. So that's what I did and they made an amazing job. Now my macbook looks brand new. They were both extremely helpful, friendly, professional and understood the importance of our firm's confidentiality. These guys really went the extra mile for me when my HTC One M7 went into boot loop. I had a year's worth of photos in there that hadn't been backed up (I was always going to do that soon). They worked on it for more than 4 hours, calling the highest levels of tech support they could get, and finally concluded there was simply no way to get into it (un-rooted, locked, S-on, no USB debug) but they REALLY tried. True to their word, they didn't charge me anything if they couldn't get my pictures back. They were great to work with-polite, professional, very competent and dedicated to helping me if they possibly could. I cannot recommend them highly enough. I had serious Mac issues with severely slowed down processing speed (paralyzing) and an external back-up drive with file corruption that disabled me from accessing the drive and the files.
