Gas customer service & business practices... just wow. On January 14, I received a bill for "gas consumption and service" covering 12/10/2025-01/06/2026 totaling $212.46. That bill included a deposit, service cost, and connection charge. Here's the issue: We didn't even have gas service until January 5. Actual gas consumption? Essentially one day. We received a "welcome" email on December 20 (dated December 19), but it did not detail any of these fees. When I called: The first rep was helpful. Once I questioned being charged for nearly a full month with no consumption, I was transferred to an "accountant" who flat-out lied, claiming a welcome letter with all fees had been sent on December 9. That is not true. He was dismissive and passed me along again. Ironically, the next person I spoke to was the same rep who, six months ago, was extremely helpful when we initially tried to get gas service. Back then: We were quoted $2,986 Told to expect a 6-month wait We paid and waited And an email from July 22 explicitly said NOT to pay the deposit and activation fee Fast forward to now, his "solution" was basically: They could come remove the meter so I wouldn't be charged until I actually had service. Excuse me? That's the best option? Bottom line: Think twice before deciding to add gas service to your home. My story begins the Friday on the week before Labor Day I try getting out of my driveway and I am blocked by Teco. At the time they didn't identify who they were or what they were doing. The following week with no notification to homeowners the alley street closes. Than I contact the City of Hollywood. When I say contact I mean everyone including the Mayor and my Commissioner. I find out that Teco was fixing an emergency leak in the gas line? Makes no sense if there is a leak you tell no one? So the Friday going into Labor Day they finish and leave. I go inside to cook dinner just to later find I got no gas. The guy came out in the middle of the night to confirm and will send a team next day. So that means no hot water, no dryer to wash clothes and dry them and no stove or oven. The next morning a guy shows for me to open my back gate. I than go on and say what happened? He than blames me the homeowner to say we didn't know you had gas it was not marked. Ok so I have lived here twenty years pay my bill every month and you don't know? My husband went to talk to him and him told him to go inside if you want gas. Nice. So by 5 pm the gas gets turned on after they dig a new trench along my driveway and rip up the street. I have never in my life waited on hold for 2 hours to start service. Jane castor just lost my vote allowing our beautiful city to have such an incompetent utility service. . I have been trying to transfer my gas service for threes days and over 7 hours of hold times. The employees laugh giggle and say "we don't have to give gas service to just anybody". You can't trust budget billing. I've used it a long time and never had a large yearly increase. Usually 10 dollars. Thus year they increase my bill 57 dollars a month. My usage is about the same as last year I called and had to get off of it I still don't know how'd that calculated such a large increase iny bill. read more

My neighborhood has been trying to get peoples TECO gas installed for a year. The PM on the job has been unresponsive to the point of incompetence. We have 20 people dying to write a check to get the lines installed and delay after delay. Finally got the contract and my quote of $2-$3K came back $11,000! I think I'm going to stick with my generator and Suburban Gas which has a much more cost effective solution with great customer service. Teco has one star due to high billage amounts each month I bought chargeable lights in my home and my bill each month is nearly $300 a month. Teco can be a few days late on payments by people but they'll send a final notice then state on the notice it's $12 reconnecting fee to disconnect at the meter and a larger fee of $185 fee at point distance like who has extra money and who gets a choice in how they'll disconnect your services... All the laws being made this should be illegal in Florida they turn your power out when they're working on power but they don't credit you anything for that...laws seriously need to change customer service agents are rude as well. read more

Can someone tell me why I can't reach anyone at Teco-People's Gas on the phone in this country, let alone in Tampa or Lakeland. After receiving monthly bills averaging $25 for several months, suddenly in October I received a past due notice for $244 and a demand for immediate payment along with current charges. A couples of days later two TECO men arrived seeking admittance to my yard so they could read the meter which they said was no longer transmitting. A few days after that another TECO employee showed up to change the meter which he said was malfunctioning. Kinda suspicious don't you think. I can't pick up the phone and discuss it with anyone, so I stated my case in a letter included with my October payment for the full amount. I have to say, im not impressed at all by TECO's customer service. I had not created an online account yet (not very good with tech) i was paying my bill through phone. For some reason I stopped receiving bills in the mail and thought "oh i must've put it on auto pay" I call to ask and could not get to a single soul... Nothing but a robot repeating the menu options at the slightest sound. finally when i get my account information from the robot after 25 minutes, i find out im past due 3 months!! NOBODY contacted me or anything about this, i also found out that i was automatically signed up for paperless billing even when i didn't have an online account. How can they expect me to know? If I could rank TECO lower I would. TECO/Peoples Gas had a crew laying a line on my street that stretched between 7 homes approximately 4 weeks ago. This crew dug up portions of all 7 homes lawns and have not repaired pour property since the work concluded. There are orang safety cones on my neighbors properties. Four feet high yellow stakes protrude from the grass with a caution statement on them stating a natural gas pipeline in at this location. I called TECO twice about the mess left by there crew and have yet to hear from the "supervisor" responsible for answering my complaint. Had I known TECO would act in such a manner I would not have let there crew on my property. read more

teco in general whether gas or electric are both companies whose ethics to say the least are very questionable. For the last 2 years the electric side has refused to adjust the dramatically over charged budget number where when it comes to the balance out for the 12 months they have overcharged us by roughly 800.00 dollars each year. the statement from the representative has constantly been we do not lower the budget amounts, but credit the overage back to the account when it cycles. (you get the money back) thing is they are getting a 0% interest loan forced from the customer for a year. Their only solution was don't use the budgeting plan which would mean during the high heat months the bill could double, so basically overpay or have major fluctuations in the bill or allow us to overcharge you. Great customer service there, guess when you are a monopoly you can do what you want! For the gas side they undercharged by a bit last year. looks like the rates went up and no adjustem t was made to off set that and they are planing to almost double the current rate, which puts it into the over collection mode just like the electric side. I offered to pay the deficit and they could raise the amount to match actual consumption but was told that was not a option to either pay the new inflated rate or turn off the budget plan and pay each month for what was used. Talk about indifferent attitudes of a public utility! This company really doesn't care they just want every penny they can pull from every customer. read more

I'm a 74 disabled person afraid gas is leaking, since my bill never went down not only from my husband passing... I now have an electric dryer, not on gas... Also brought up to their attention. My electricity was cut off due to a 3 day late payment because I am not enrolled in autopay. I called and spoke with a customer service representative after had tried four times through that crazy automated system that isn't helpful AT ALL. The representative then tells me that they can only guarantee that the electricity will be on today but no ETA. It's been 5 hours and I come home to the it still off. Would give a zero rating. we moved in our home and activated service the day before closing. It didn't process before the seller canceled, so they shut the gas off and wanted $60.00 to turn back on. They are a monopoly and need to be regulated. Also, I wanted to ask how my bill doubled since the previous month and I was unable to access the account without my husband's social security number, told I can't add me to the account. I got a tankless water heater in 2020 and I TRULY regret that decision. The old water heater was in the garage and consistently provided hot water. The tankless water heater was mounted on the outside of my home. I'd prefer it be secure in my garage, but the installer said it had to be mounted on the outside of the house. Now I don't have consistent hot water in the kitchen. The main bathroom shower will not get hot unless a bathroom faucet is running at the same time. My water utility bill has significantly increased. I filed a claim with TECO/Peoples Gas and I'm getting the run around on the claim status. I'd like to have my old water heater back and let TECO have the useless waste of time and money tankless water heater back. TECO's customer service does not appear to have the computer software to allow the dispatch department to give access to the customer service department as to the scheduling of technician schedules. They will not tell you if the technician will show up at your residence in the AM or the PM! If you need service they give an appointment window from 8 am to 5 pm! read more

The TECO technicians are first-rate. No problem there. But, pray that you never need to use them because getting through the Customer Service red tape is absolutely ridiculous. First, getting to speak to a live person takes a series if jumping through automated hoops. Then, when you finally get a person, they want to take down your information, then re-take your same information, then read you documents on the order of the size of War and Peace. Then, they want to re-take your info again. Apparently, emergency does not equate to speedy help, to TECO. Since their my only game in town, my family has to deal with it. I see I'm not in the minority here when I say that this is the worst power company, if not the worst COMPANY, period!! I could say a dozen negative things about TECO, but my worst experience is pretty similar to a previous reviewer... straight up extortion. I moved into a new apartment that had been vacant a few months. The electricity had been on but was rarely used by the landlord. When I settled in and started using power, even after starting a new account and placing a deposit, they cut out my power with no warning. When I inquired why- TECO's customer service rep insisted that I must have been squatting there without my name on the account and needed to pay the $300-something balance for the previous months AND a new deposit. I didn't even live there a week ago! TECO's customer service response: calling me a liar and refusing to budge. Yes, the L-word, she used it. I was floored. Ultimately, I had to put down a couple hundred dollars more to get my power back on (I had excellent credit at the time) and fax them copies of my lease to prove I wasn't in fact lying like they believed. It took weeks for the charges to finally leave my account. I was then was plagued by bills over $200/month for the next few months until I finally moved out. This was a tiny, modest apartment and I doubt that I could have possibly used $250 of electricity per month, especially when I usually kept the thermostat off to save money. Something is wrong here... and we know what that is. Tampa Electric Company pretty much embodies the reason people want to build self-sustaining solar-powered houses off the power grid. I work my butt off just to pay my bills and hate giving my hard-earned money to companies that actively extort their customers. I urge TECO's PR team to contact me about this review and call me a liar again. I hope TECO fails or at least faces a competitor one day that will oust them once and for all. read more

I have never had a problem with TECO until I moved from a house into an apartment. I was going to move into a small house but then that fell through and I moved to an apartment. This is when the confusion all started. I called TECO to get them to move the service from the house where I was suppose to move to, into the apartment I was actually going to move into to. I live in a house that has been broken up into 2 apartments and my landlord even told me that sometimes TECO has had a problem finding the meter. I made sure to mention this. I called and was told everything was just fine. One month later, my landlord tells me that TECO was still charging him for the electricity when I also received a bill in the mail(They billed me for the wrong house). I called and was told everything was taken care of and my name was now on an account for my current apartment. Fast forward one week, I come home from work and my lights were shut off. I called immediately, spent about 1 1/2 hours on the phone, and was told that this was a mistake and that someone was coming out that evening to fix everything. This was not done and I had to spend the night elsewhere b/c I didn't have electricity. I come home the next day and the power is still not on. I spend another hour and a half on the phone trying to fix it. I was told that there was an order to turn it off and that since it was the weekend, I had to wait until Monday to get costumer service on the phone to get my power back on and there was nothing anyone could do. I kept explaining that I was on the phone with them the previous day and this was a mistake. I finally asked her to look my name up to verify how long I've been trying to fix this. They then realized their mistake and said they would have someone coming out to turn my power on. So when I was told that there was nothing anyone could do until Monday, that was just completely and utterly false. Fast forward another month, and I get a call from them saying, no one was being charged for the power and my name wasn't on an account. Another huge mistake on their part. I gave them all my information and thought everything was fine. I today, get a bill in the mail for $220.00 for a "deposit". The bill is dated November 27, 2013 and the bill arrived December 2, 2013, and is due December 4, 2013. I've already paid a deposit and was told many times that a one time deposit is all you needed. My main problem I have with TECO is the amount of mis-communication in one company. After almost 2 months how has this problem not been fixed yet? By the end of this nightmare, I will have been on the phone with TECO for at least 3 1/2 hours trying to get this straightened out. read more

God, for the love of God I WISH I could give this company ZERO stars....NO, NEGATIVE STARS!!! I'm not going to give the "book" version of what how this company made my life a living hell for NEARLY A YEAR...I'll just summarize. I was not living in my house for a while as I'd moved in with my girlfriend. This was for a year. My only bill for a year was about $10/month for a few incidentals that I left going. After a year I broke up with my girlfriend and moved back in. The month I moved back in my meter broke; I know because my bill was $0.00 and showed I'd used "zero" electricity. Being the nice and conscientious person that I am, I called to let them know. Next thing I know, I get a bill for about $1400 or something in that range. It seems they assumed that since my bill was so low for the entire previous year, they assumed it was broke for an entire year and tried to bill me what they "thought" I used for a year's worth of electricity. I sent then document after document showing that I lived elsewhere, and every time I sent them what they asked for, they decided it wasn't good enough and wanted more. They made my life a LIVING HELL for about a YEAR. I was about to get a lawyer when I finally broke down and called a relative who worked there. It was suddenly cleared up in 5 minutes (if only I'd known I'd have called sooner). What if I didn't have a relative? I'd have been dealing with a lawsuit. I've had service with TECO for 26 years; 12 years at current location as a home owner. I just received a MANDATORY deposit for $750.00 because of 2 late payments in 12 months. In 2013 I was such a good customer they refunded my prior deposit. I called customer service and explained that $750.00 deposit for an obviously stable customer seems a bit out of line and I got nothing... no thank you for years of being a customer, nothing. Obviously loyalty and customer service isn't part of their company's motto. Neither is providing continuous service during the summer time since we have VERY FREQUENT outages. Random outages that are just enough to kill small appliances, telephones, etc... and definitely no apology the random outages. So if you are thinking about moving to an area with TECO service, think twice. read more

I over paid my bill and they called me with a 30 minute disconnect warning, because they update there software and said I was a small percentage of people effected in their system, showing they haven't paid, but that I have to run to a Winn Dixie within 30 minutes to make another payment on a payment I already paid. TECO, the only gas company I can use are dragging their feet to install a gas meter. I completed my paperwork in the middle of February and had a plumber run gas pipes for a stove and dryer. My end is done except the hook up. I placed countless calls and emails to Teco's Accounts Manager who never responded. I finally got another person who stated to call at the end of May to see where I am on the schedule !! I ran into a lot of bad businesses moving to Florida, this one takes the cake. read more

Maybe it's time for someone to do something about TECO. Outrageous demanding fees as a deposit once you pay them late. When are we supposed to get this money back? NEVER. Unless you move out of the State, if you look at the consumer reviews and Ripoff Report and Consumer report, it's hundreds of complaints. It's absurd that you pay them on time for years and when you are in difficulties paying bills and living pay check to pay check and struggling to pay them as we go that is when they charge you a huge fee and threatening you if you do not pay they will turn the electricity off.
