I called the billing department to have them change my due date back because I accidentally hit the wrong due date when you pick your new due date on the app and now they won't do anything about it. They didn't seem to even care and I feel it's very irresponsible and unprofessional of them that cannot be able to literally just change the due date for what the customer needs when it was a typo to begin with. They are a CORRUPT company. They have been slowly raising my bill for years. Now I'm paying $178.00 a month for a small one bedroom apartment! When I called to try to get it lowered, she tried to say it was me. I used the A/C all last summer. It's Florida! Of course I did! She said that I am on the plan where I pay the average and it's cheaper. If I weren't on that my bill would have been $275 for July of last year! SMALL ONE BEDROOM!!!!!!! How do these people sleep at night? They screwed me in 2020. Talked me into buying their insurance for $5.99 a month. It would cover my electronics if ruined from a storm. That actually happened. When I tried to get my claim paid on, they sent me on a wild goose chase. I called and was given the runaround. I was told to take my stuff to Best Buy and they would test it to confirm if it was ruined due to an electrical surge. And then they will cover the charge. So I took my stuff to Best Buy. Best Buy didn't know what I was talking about. They didn't understand why Duke Energy keeps sending customers to them to test equipment for surge damage. That is not something that they do. So it was suggested to me that I take pictures of the equivalent equipment with prices and send that in with my claim. So I did. Duke Energy refused to pay, they denied the claim for two reasons. The first reason is that each piece of equipment was under $100 each. So even though I am out $360, each piece of equipment was not over $100. Nothing like that was ever said to me when they talked me into taking the insurance. Also, I need to take it to someone who can test it to confirm that it's been singed from an electrical search. I told them I could not find anyone to do that and ask them for suggestions. They said that they did not know, but that I had to somehow figure it out myself. BUT since each piece of equipment was under $100 each anyway, they just plain weren't going to pay it. PERIOD. read more

1 have had Duke Energy since 2008. I recently had my power cut for non payment for first time. Which I was shocked since it has been extremely hot. So I paid the bill. So today I received a 400.00 dollar deposit request from Duke energy. I called them since it states a deposit request I said no on request. I was told if I did not deposit in 2 weeks my power would be cut off. So I mentioned that 400.00 for deposit would leave me without money for food and gas to get to my 1st responder nurse position at local hospital. Well the responder said they would turn off my power and I would need to pay a disconnection fee. I explained that why is Duke energy options is pay deposit or disconnection fee which i can't afford. I signed up for service during their system transition and while I was signing up I waited an hour and my call dropped then I called back and my credit was run twice, I was transferred over and over again. I "established" service to find out it never went through but the notes on my calls were thank goodness. Best part is my service was cut off without notice and then I was left to call and establish service again and wait over 3 hours after sitting in the phone for 2 hours and speaking with 3 people to get my power turned back on because of an error on THEIR end. And I still had to pay a $12 activation fee. I wish there was another provider but they hold the market in my area. Terrible. read more

Very disappointed with this company. I travel to my parents place for the holidays in Pennsylvania once a year. I missed my payment this month bc I was physically not at my home in Florida. Simple mistake. Instead of adding a late fee (which I would have been ok with and accepted due to my own fault) they decided to close my account. As I prepare to return to my home in Florida, I remembered I hadn't paid so I quickly logged on to do so. I paid $260 to get my account balance to $0. Much to my surprise the account did not reopen, so I called. The woman stated that I needed to start a new account which I agreed and then she proceeded to tell me my new account number was the same as the old, but to get it activated I needed to put a $155 deposit down to begin. Essentially I just paid over $400!!! to start my account back up. Absolute atrocious scam being ran there for a valued tenured customer missing a simple payment. Don't pay late, they will shut your electricity off. This happened to me recently. I didn't get a courtesy call or anything. I didn't do it on purpose, it was an oversight on my part. So I had to pay extra for reconnection charge. Then later my bill had a $245 deposit added in. It was hidden in so well at first I hit the roof thinking I had an aberrantly high bill. I stewed all weekend, then looked at the bill again online and saw the added deposit. I called, offering to put on autopay in lieu of deposit. When that didn't work, they did agree to split up the deposit into payments. read more

I've had Duke for about 5 years now. This review is about their solar division. It was a weird scenario but they had to wait on Vivint to contact them from Utah before they could come out and inspect their meter, etc. and then they called me back.. just head-shaking confusion but they did get their equipment set up. I was told by Duke as well as Vivint that I would save energy. I told both parties that I didn't care about that.. I just wanted to save money. I was assured by both parties that that would happen. Such is not the case. I've had the panels three months and each month I'm greeted with a bill of approximately $250. I called Duke solar division and I'm told that they will look at the meter they installed. They did that and of course, the meter is working great. I called Vivint and of course, the panels are working great. When I pointed out that my bill has doubled since the panels were turned on, I'm told that that is unusual but I still need to pay the bill. Broken down, I now have a panel payment of $115 a month and another $250 a month for electricity. I don't use gas. I'll take this opportunity to point out that it's just me, 3 dogs and a guinea pig. If I had known that my electricity bill would double compared to a year ago then no, I would never have gotten the panels. I can't get the panels removed because I owe money on the loan. I'm now stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place, as they say. I can understand now why Duke would push solar use. read more

DO NOT USE THE FIXED BILL PROGRAM. ITS A SCAM. Duke advertises a "Fixed Bill" Program which is based on an average over the previous year. I just completed my 1st year and decided to cancel upon the renewal date because the fixed monthly bill for the next 12 months was $50 higher every month. It was not going to be beneficial to me to continue the program. IF YOU CANCEL be prepared for a hefty bill to come your way. They say this is a good program so you can budget every month, however they don't tell you to budget for the removal charge if you cancel. Regardless if you go the full 12 months or cancel prior to that, it doesn't matter. Duke will stick it to you. So just BEWARE if you choose to use this program. read more

Duke energy is the mean nasty man in the monopoly game. Funny how during a game of monopoly the lowest rated things on the board are the utility companies. Here Duke is a multi billion dollar company and they can't get their accounting right. They decided to do budget billing but they decided to not average the bill out for one year so I ended up with a $100 higher Bill for three months at least. I don't mind paying the money I know I owe it to them but they didn't calculate them correctly, because they said they got a new computer system. The newest thing that is happening is their rates went up 12% between December and January . When I looked at my January bill I use less electricity, and it was 120% higher!
