Wow! This place is INCREDIBLE!! If you are a house plant lover and in the Chicago area. THIS IS A MUST STOP!!! Ted's Greenhouse is HUGE! Biggest nursery I have ever seen in Illinois! They have so many different varieties of plants. It is like a conservatory with the amount of diversity they have here. It really is a spectacle to behold! They have the mother plants which the use for propagating above the for sale plants. The mother plants were insanely beautiful! So glad I went to Ted's and can't wait to go back there soon! I had let this go, but I just had a friend share another story of this place and now I feel somewhat responsible for not sharing my story with her. So here it is. I went shopping for plants with my mom. Walking up and down the isles finishing my shopping I head toward the checkout. As I am walking to pay a guy runs up verbally abusive, calling me a *bleeping* *bleep* sucker, among other things. Truly stunned I just looked at him as he rifled through my cart saying I couldn't have this or that. Just one of those WTF moments that by the time you can process everything it's over. I brushed it aside and checked out and paid for my stuff. After paying for what is now my property, the same guy runs up grabs my property and runs off saying I should just get refunded for what he took, that he needed my property. You know, instead of keeping what is legally mine. I was sworn at, and technically stolen from. The cashier looked embarrassed and apologized. The manager instead of being empathetic tried to intimidate me to take my review down, and told me he talked to the kid who claimed he did nothing wrong and claimed I was lying. He eventually got Yelp to remove it because of a technicality, but Yelp helped me resolve it, thank you again. Plenty of other nursery's in the area! Stop lying. The review was taken down bc I had two Yelp accounts not because I was wrong! This stays. You can take me to court if I'm lying. Just because you don't like it, does not mean it didn't happen. You sound ridiculous. If what you are saying is true, why would the cashier have SOLD ME the plants if "they had a very large prepaid tag" as you claim. FINALLY NO, my mom never received any replacement plants. I would call you a few names but I was raised better, unlike your staff. read more

Refused to honor the posted price. When given my total it sounded high. I asked the clerk to confirm that I was charged $18.99 per plant, which he confirmed. He then ran my card and only after informed me that they charged me over 20% higher. I told him that all signs for the plants I purchased showed a price of $18.99. His response was that they just raised prices and that all of the prices were wrong. There are consumer laws protecting against overcharging, stating that the business must honor the posted price. They refused to do so. I will not return and will not recommend them in the future. Imagine choosing to break the law and lose a customer over $25. read more

As a lover of cacti and succulents, I was so happy to find this place. Their selection is so large that it's almost overwhelming (in a good way). I didn't even go in some of the buildings but still managed to spend plenty of time checking out everything. Only suggestion is to be careful when shopping. I love going to Teds, but I am usually annoyed by the amount of plants that are displayed but NOT FOR SALE for some reason or another. and prices at the register don't always match what the sign says. it is my opinion that all the NOT FOR SALE plants should be all in the same location where public knows before they enter that none of those plants in a certain area are for sale. the other problem is the constant LOUD ringing that gives me a terrible headache by the time I leave. the prices on the smaller plants toward the back of the greenhouse are very good so I keep returning. And I love to see all the plants even if NOT FOR SALE. I do spend less and less time there each time I go because of the ringing sound. read more

This is my second summer purchasing from Ted's. I keep it simple with petunias. Last year I dug them out in November. They bloomed for so long and were so full. Ted's hanging baskets are $25 and are HUGE. The staff is attentive to the plants and it shows. Everything there is thriving. They give good advice too. read more

Unreal the amount of variety that is in this place. I found some of my wish list plants on my first trip. I would suggest going during the day when it is at its brightest, there are no lights in the greenhouses. Also plan to stay a while if it's your first time! This greenhouse is a rare combination of variety, some staff with deep knowledge of their plants, and quality plants. I'm always disappointed when I go to other nurseries since this one has spoiled me so much. My family has done business with Ted's for decades. If you ask around, Ted's really has a shining reputation in the area. These guys usually have the widest variety of healthy hot pepper and other vegetable plants in spring. Their pepper plants grow really well for me every year, and their variety of pepper plants changes enough every year so I can try something rare or new. Some varieties available at Ted's which grew well for me were carribian red hots, holy moley, jalapeno, and Thai hot. They typically have a greenhouse full of herbs in the springtime as well. They also have a couple greenhouses filled with hard to find cacti & succulents. Aside from a large variety of younger cacti & succulents, they also keep some well-developed cacti in stock. I've seen golden barrel cacti there over a foot in diameter as well as column type cacti over 5 feet tall. Their flower baskets are exceptional gifts as well. Find yourself a less common, beautiful arrangement to make those special people in your life feel special. read more

I love this place. I especially like the variety of succulents and cacti. Have been looking all over for a Venus Fly trap - should have known they had it here. Maybe a little more expensive but I've never had a problem with any of the plants (indoor or outdoor) I've purchased. Go during the holidays - the poinsettia greenhouse really gets you in the mood. Also a great place to spend just walking around and getting your green on. Like having a conservatory in my back yard. read more

Unbelievable selection of cacti! There were several greenhouses dedicated specifically to them! They were also very cheap, around $2 for the small cacti, many of them flowering. Whoever helped me knew what they were talking about. He knew how much light/water each cactus needs, which cacti flower and when, and which would do okay in a south facing window. read more

We stop in here seasonally to pickup some plants for decoration at our condo. The selection is okay but there isn't a clear shopping designation for where to get certain types of plants. This store looks like a commercial operation with large volumes of plants. The reason for the 3 star rating is because of the hours of operation (only open to 3pm) and the selection isn't what I expected from a facility of this size. After returning home from California, I have been looking for a place with a large variety of succulents and cacti. I was beyond disappointed with the selections offered in Illinois until I came across the reviews on this site and decided it was worth seeing what Ted's Nursery has to offer. I went to Ted's yesterday because I thought it would be a great thing to do on a rainy day - everything was inside in greenhouses so it was perfect! This place is beyond words! Not one nursery or big chain store like Home Depot can even come close to what this place has to offer. There were 2 greenhouses committed to only cacti and succulents! (You should look at picture of the hydrangeas that I added to the photo album - they were so vibrant and healthy). The staff at this place far exceeded my expectations. I had a couple questions about the succulents and one of the workers Brad (I think he might be Ted's grandson) helped my dad and I out for over 15-20 minutes. He was was extremely knowledgable about the plants and explained to us how they care for them, what to and not to do, etc. We told him that we drove 30 minutes just to visit the nursery and he was so honored that we would do such a thing. It seemed like everyone enjoyed working there and was always willing to help. This place is HUGE and has a LARGE selection of flowers, palms, herbs, hanging baskets, etc. I would definitely recommend taking a visity to Ted's, you will not regret it! read more

I met my sister here in late May. She'd been here once before and couldn't stop talking about it! The place is huge! Beautiful plants everywhere! More choices than I ever could have imagined! I loved the huge wall of growing plants! Problem was that assistance was poor. Hard to identify who was staff, hard to find them. Some stock was on hold for commercial florists and landscapers. We chose some ferns and plants from that stock because it wasn't sectioned off. It was taken from our carts without a word! The person at the checkout was rude. But I will shop here again because their stuff is so beautiful!!! The plants speak for themselves!!!! read more

Ted's is THE BEST nursery in the southwest suburbs, maybe even the entire Chicago-land area. I live in Chicago, and I make the 40 minute commute whenever I need plants. I'm a huge fan of cacti, and succulents. There are two, HUGE greenhouses filled with the best selections I have ever seen. Not only are they the healthiest plants, they are the most inexpensive. I go to Teds at least once every two weeks, and I always leave happy. One employee tends to the cacti and succulents specifically. He is so smart, and knows everything about the plants. He has shown me plants that I've never even heard of, and of course I buy them. The selection of succulents and cacti is beyond words. Ted's of course does sell other types of plants, and all are amazing. I started making terrariums, and all I had to do was ask an employee about them. He showed me dozens of plants to use in terrariums that I would never have known. They're hanging baskets are also the most beautiful I've ever seen. They are expensive, but they last until the fall. My mom buys baskets for her house every spring. She would always go to random garden centers or home improvement stores for them. Then.. I took her to Teds! She has never purchased a plant anywhere else. The baskets are in pristine condition, with hundreds of choices, and containing the most beautiful mix of flowers. This only scratches the surface of Teds. From the ferns, annuals, perennials, herbs, flowers, shrubs, Ted's is where it's at. Even if you're not in the market for buying plants, a trip to Ted's is like another world. When I walk through the houses there I feel like I'm at a conservatory at a Zoo, or botanical garden, except EVERYTHING is for sale! Not only is Ted's selection and staff amazing, the place is family owned. Personally, I prefer to shop at family owned businesses. It's a little more intimate, and I would much rather purchase the already phenomenal inventory from Ted's, and have my money go to a family owned business, rather than some corporate big box. It's very likely that Ted himself will be answering your questions when you're shopping. He is a genius when it comes to plants, and so are his staff. This place is a hidden treasure, and I HIGHLY suggest checking it out. read more

My review is going to be a little all over the place. I loved the place, I want to live there, but I am petrified of it all at once. I have never been a green thumb or really owned plants. I had two old cats that ate everything. They are gone now so I decided to try my hand at gardening and maybe bring in some plants. I live within walking distance to Ted's and took my son there on a busy Saturday afternoon. First mistake. going when it's super busy when you're a novice isn't a great idea. People are hardcore about their gardening. They walk around with big carts full of stuff and the employees are running around helping and doing things. I felt so confused. The place looks so much smaller than it really is. I finally tracked someone down and asked for basic help. I explained I am new to this, so new that two weeks ago I pulled weeds for the first time in my life and ended up with poison ivy. That's how new I am. I was looking for a project for my 5 year old and I to do, and chances are the 5 year old would know more at this point. He planted peas at school. He is ahead of me. The guy laughed and asked about sun exposure, soil, etc. and I shook my head and said, no, you don't understand. You need to find the most rudimentary project for me, give it to me, and I will buy it. Then he understood. He was great. I bought a couple of petunias but then couldn't find a pot or bags of soil. It took me forever to find someone else to help me. I don't think that this is their fault really. They are around and busy, and I was just so.....helpless. The next guy I found really and truly couldn't understand just how dense I am to the process because he just kept talking to me like I knew something. He couldn't grasp I just needed a plastic pot in the right size and the right size bag of dirt. He couldn't because he is really smart, and I am not. Sort of like asking Stephen Hawking how I would go about making mac and cheese. He did however have someone ring me up so I wouldn't have to get back into the long line, and he was helpful with the cart. The place itself is full of the most beautiful plants, cacti, succulents, greens, etc. I have ever seen and I didn't even see a quarter of it. My advice? Go sans your spazzy 5 year old. If you are totally new to gardening and lost, go early or late, when it's not so crowded, when you can really look around and the employee is able to truly absorb just how dumb you are. I will be back at some point, I am certain of it. read more

Was looking for some interesting succulents, cacti, and houseplants to fill out my 60+ collection. Ted's has an incredible selection; multiple greenhouses, affordable prices on soil, and unique varieties I had only seen out west. They grow a lot of plants from seeds, so there are areas where plants are not for sale as they come to proper size, but even in mid January they had so much to offer. Even on MLK Day there were still other shoppers, and when I did have questions one of the employees answered everything. I will definitely come back in the Spring to see what else is on offer! read more

On Valentine's Day, my husband and I drove to Ted's Greenhouse. What a treat! Out of all nurseries that were/are located in IL, Ted's has the healthiest and nicest selections. From succulents to tropicals. We spent an hour ,minimum in the Succulent section. If it had been earlier, 'we left our house rather late in the PM,' I could have spent the entire day looking at their beautiful succulents. Ted's plants are well-tended, some true rarieties. I even found a slightly variegated Thanksgiving Cactus/Schlumbergera. One favorite succulent, that followed us home was, Dorstenia gigas. So, very beautiful. The remainder of our day was spent looking at other setions of Ted's, large green house. Another beauty that caught my eye was a variegated Monstera..this gorgeous Aroid was another plant that followed us home. :) All in all, we love Ted's; it's definately a 5* nursery. Ted is the nicest person ever, and oh, so helpful and kind. Although we were running late, he invited us to stay after hours. How many people would be so considerate? The succulent man, 'should have asked his name,' was also helpful and knowledgeable. A great personality, too. He not only named each plant by common and Botanical names, but gave instructions for their care. I advise anyone interested in buying unusual plants, 'at great prices,' take a ride to Ted's Nursery. I purchased 5-6 perennials this Spring and only one made it. I should have followed my instinct when I saw a good number of their items in not that great of health but I figured it was early in the season and once I planted and gave them good fertilizer, I'd have beautiful plants. That was not the case. I'm not a pro at gardening but I'm also not a beginner. I purchased accordingly where I got sun and where I got shade. I read directions and do my research. The people are nice and knowledgeable that work here but I can't see spending top dollar on plants that die in a month. read more

Just went here today based on reviews. I have to say, they're all correct! This is an awesome nursery. Nearly all the plants were healthy looking (I didn't know hibiscus even GOT that big) and they have a great selection. Personally I thought the cactus selection was a little underwhelming, but I've been spoiled by living in the Southwest where cactus shops are much larger and carry more variety. I wound up going home with a little aloe plant, a venus fly trap and some kind of pretty plant that starts with a "d". The man who cashed me out made sure to tell me specifics on the fly trap because they are a touchy plant, and I'll admit, I'd have been giving it tap water and probably have killed it inside a week! read more

We found this wonderful greenhouse, after we discovered one of our favorite nurseries/ garden centers (Syd's) had closed. It was worth the trip! The owner was so helpful and knowledgeable. The prices were very reasonable and the selection of plants and flowers was huge! This greenhouse not only has all the usual plants and flowers and herbs etc.... but much much more. I have never seen more succulents and ferns and herbs. I vastly prefer a family run business to big chains like Home Depot. The staff at Ted's has a wealth of information and experience, whereas big chains hire people who know very little about gardening or growing plants.
